  • The Meater is Worth it's weight in Prime Rib--and More!
I am almost confounded by the excellence of this product. Almost never does a product's claims live up to the real world. The Meater is an exception. I prepared prime rib for a special family dinner, and the Meater allowed me to feel in control throughout the process. Not only does it provide the internal temperature of the meat, it also give the temperature of the air within the oven or whatever heat source is used. I could check the cooking progress so easily using the app on my phone. Anyone who invests in meat should have a Meater. It is hands down the best product for the job. I say this without any compensation. ... show more

  • Gives perfect results but leaves a mark
I purchased the MEATER after watching Youtube videos on how to use my new Komodo style grill, where it was occasionally mentioned and recommended. The device and app are great. I love how when initiating a cook it steps you through the kind of protein and even the cut as well has how well you like it done. The app then calculates estimated cooking time and alerts you when there is five minutes remaining. I've gotten perfect results every time I use the MEATER. The biggest issue is when carving a roast it looks like someone put a bullet through it. Other probes where the electronics sit outside of the grill leave a hole a fraction of the size. Bluetooth range is acceptable with this model with a ceramic grill, where I can use the app anywhere in my kitchen or family room while the probe is outside in the grill. But with a metal top Weber gas grill I have to place my phone up against the glass on my kitchen window sill. The range is very much limited by the metal lid so I would purchase a MEATER with an extended range when using a gas grill. Pros: gives perfect results, great app with nice features, easy to use Cons: leaves a large hole in the meat, Bluetooth range limited by metal grill lids ... show more

This item is great it always allows me to get my choice of meat to be at what I select for done and there is no more guessing in the process. I also love the way it connects to my iPhone to let me know when my selection of meat has arrived at my selected level of done. This is a product worth buying especially if you like doing a great steak on your barbecue! ... show more

  • Not Ready for Prime Time—But Getting better :)
I have used one of these for six cooks on a BGE ranging from a 2 hour/10 pound turkey to a 12 pound 16½ hour whole pork shoulder. The ambient readings are pretty much worthless. They are heavily influenced by the internal temperature and/or proximity to the dome or grilling surface. Get it to close to something else and it is going to read way high. This also causes the internal temperature to read way high. Otherwise, it will be way under until the meat temp gets a lot closer to true ambient. I am highly confident of all of these assertions having used, a BBQ GURU PartyQ grill probe, a ThermoPro grill probe and the dial in the dome of my BGE to make ambient comparisons and a Javelin Pro Duo to double check internal temps. Bluetooth range is very short once structures such as the BGE dome and brick walls get in the way. I set up an IPad just inside the house from the grill and used the cloud trick to monitor the cook on my phone. Even then, every time your phone gets into bluetooth range, it drops the cloud. Gets out of bluetooth range and fumbles to reestablish Wifi connection. A whole other category of issues is that this thing is BIG. It is almost a full ¼”(6mm) in diameter and they ask you to shove it 2 5/8″ (6.67 cm) into the thickest part of your meat. Unless you are cooking something huge, this means you have to insert it diagonally or into the side of something like a steak or brisket flat. Finally, while the minimalist design of both the Meater and it’s charging box are nice, they may be just a little too minimal. The second time I went to use the Meater, it would not connect to any of my i-devices. Turned out the battery was dead despite having spent a week in the charger. Seems, it was not making good contact and was not charging. I had to start my cook while the Meater charged and put it in three hours later. The is no way to tell if it is charging other than that it disconnects from your bluetooth receiver in that condition—a good thing to remember. In concept, this thing is really slick. In use, not so much. Mine is in it’s sleek, minimalist coffin for good and a Thermoworks Signals is on it’s way. I’m more than happy to put up with wired probes in exchange for accuracy. Update. Since my original 2-star review, I have gotten more experience with temperature probes in general. While my ThermoWorks Signals unit is a great basic thermometer, the wires are a pain in the butt and their wireless implementation is a total disaster. This has made me appreciate Meater more. In fact, Meater's wireless implemention is far better than either ThermoWorks' or Flame Boss's (masquerading as Big Green Egg Genius). I still don't trust Meater's ambient readings but it is a great wireless meat thermometer if you keep the distal end away from hot surfaces. While Meater's customer support response time is laggy (I think they are in Tiawan) their responses are well thought out and polite. Long story short—I ordered the Meater Block today. ... show more
