I bought this MeatStick set as an early Christmas present to myself. My first impressions when opening it, the case it comes with is nice. It looks like there are some empty slots if you purchase more MeatSticks. It comes with 2 thermometers. One has a completely black end and the other is black with 2 red rings around it so you can tell them apart (see pictures). When I had to charge it, I was surprised to see that it needed AA batteries to charge the thermometer instead of using a plug in USB cable. I ended up using some rechargeable AA batteries for this. At first I was annoyed at this setup but then I realized when you start a cook, you need to have the meatstick in the charger, hit the button, and then take it out of the charger to initialize it for a cook. So if you're outside preparing to do a long smoke and you're about to put the thermometer in, having the charger attached to an outlet and then going to fetch the thermometer from there is really inconvenient compared to a completely mobile charger. Setting up the wifi bridge was a breeze - the only thing I had to do was pick the wifi network to join, which was nice that the app actually asked. I use a separate network for my smart devices (just for that extra layer of separation). Other smart devices I've set up in the past just use whatever wifi network your phone was connected to without asking. I had no issues at all with the range no matter where I was in my house since I was using the wifi bridge. I cooked ribeye steak 2 different times to make sure both sticks were working. I'm not sure how accurate the ambient temperature sensor is but the internal temperature is definitely accurate as it matched up to what my thermapen was telling me. I usually use my cast iron for steaks but this time around I opted to do reverse sears in my Matfer carbon steel pan. Since I have a toddler running around touching everything he can, this wireless thermometer was great in that I wouldn't have to open the oven to check the consistency of the steak and there were no wires for my little guy to pull. At 125 degrees internal temperature, I took the steaks out of the oven and put it on the stove top to sear it and baste it. All in all, really simple to use. No issues as of yet. Will try on something with a longer cook time next time around as reverse searing takes less than an hour. ... show more

I tested this out a few times on steak and other things. Generally, it is pretty solid. Easy to handle. And my steaks have been coming out just about right. The design is sleek and I love how there is a magnet on the base which allows me to stick it to my frig. But you do have to be careful, the stick gets pretty hot and you should always use gloves or something when you are pulling it out. I have been using in a combination of using an insta-grill. A few tips I figured out. 1. Be careful about how much ambient heat you have, that will affect how much time or how early you have to pull out your meat. 2. Use a glove or cloth when you pull it out of the meat so that you don't get burned. 3. Don't wash it right away or put it in water. Instead, let it cool down before cleaning it. (metal hitting something cold will warp the metal) 4. If you are using an insta-grill have your alarm happen at 15 degrees lower than your target temp. 5. Get yourself some rechargeable batteries. If you don't already have any. It is just good to have for this and other gadgets around the house. As an engineer, I am always looking at how to improve something. And I got some suggestions for the makers. 1. It would be good to have a visual indicator on the stick that can tell you if it is still "hot". Probably not possible since LED will melt in the heat. Other than maybe heat color changing material? 2. Make the base rechargeable, we are kind of in that age where everything is rechargeable using micro USB or USB C. 3. Make the app smarter, instead of having hard-coded temperature alarms and such. Make it more dynamic. You can detect the ambient heat and internal heat. You can calculate how/when to take out the steak in order to take into account, residual heat, and how that is affected by the ambient heat. If the ambient heat is 200, then you can take it out at 130 (target 135). But if it is 500, you should probably be taking it out at 120 (target 135). 4. Also, I understand why you need to have more permissions on the app, but try to start reducing the number of permissions and battery usage on the app. ... show more
