I purchased the Luba AWD 5000 and received it on August 20, 2023. Since the past month, I can confidently say WHO this mower is for. Firstly, once everything is set up, the mower does a great job, and the yard looks meticulously done. The striping and the ability to change the angle of the strips make the lawn look like it was professionally mowed. Also, it is primarily a set-it-and-forget-it affair (once everything is set up). The other great thing is that you can have that just-mowed-look almost daily (once everything is set up). "This sounds perfect, Mr. Random Amazon-reviewer person! I'm going to click buy now right away!" - You. Hold your horses! If you haven't picked up on it, a decent amount of setting up is required if you want a perfect mow. The "setup" out of the box is very simple. It only takes 15 minutes to get the Luba out of the box and plugged in. Setting things up correctly is what will take some trial and error. The RTK receiver placement is a make-it or break-it affair. I first tried using the RTK mounted to the post provided in the box attached to the charging base. Unless your charging base is located in an area of the yard with a fully open line of sight to the sky, I would not recommend doing this. I had tried this placement positioned 10 feet away from a large barn in my yard. The Luba would lose GPS signal in about 10% of the areas of my yard that had tree coverage. I decided to buy a wall mount and use a ladder to mount the RTK receiver at the top corner of the barn, so it has full access to the sky, and this alone is a MUST! Mount the RTK receiver in an area with FULL sky access—no trees, no other roofs, no other buildings, etc. If you place the RTK correctly, you should only lose signal when driving your Luba between 2 tall buildings or under hefty tree coverage. Oh, and once you have your RTK mounted in a good location, DO NOT MOVE IT! You'll have to redo all the mappings if you do. Oh good, you're still reading this. NOW is when things get fun. All the magic happens on the Mammotion Luba App. The App itself is just OK. It could be more intuitive, and the translation quality needs to be clearer. For example, "Automatic Pile Down" should say "automatic undocking" or indicate that it means the Luba will undock itself, and you don't have to drive it off the dock. There are other nuggets of mystery that I still am not 100% certain of the meaning. This is all part of the charm?? There are times that the Luba won't connect through the App. This requires that you have a strong Wi-Fi signal where the Luba is docked, so if your Luba is not in an area that gets a good Wi-Fi signal, I would move the charging dock location closer to your house. The RTK and Luba GPS signals are independent of each other, so as long as you don't have the Luba located between 2 homes that are tightly placed, you should be fine. The other part of connecting to the Luba is that sometimes you need to force close the App to reconnect because when the App times out, the Luba will only reconnect if you fully complete the App and open it fresh. I hope an update will resolve this, but force closing the App, for now, will usually fix this. When you initially map out the yard, you must be close enough to the Luba to connect with Bluetooth. You won't need to connect to it with Bluetooth in the future after you've successfully mapped out the yard, connections, and no-go areas, but if you want to be able to steer it around, you'll need to be at least 15 feet from it. Mapping your yard is relatively straightforward. However, if you need to become more familiar with driving remote-controlled cars or playing mobile racing games, properly steering the Luba around your mowing area may take a few tries. Don't worry if you mess things up by not following the outside line you want to mow perfectly; you can always come back and readjust the moving line later and, more importantly, after watching where Luba mows when you hit go. After you've mapped out your exterior perimeter, you can add no-go zones around areas you don't want the Luba to mow and "Channels" or connecting paths, allowing your Luba to move from one non-connected mowing place to the next. After that, you can set up a mowing schedule and set the day of the week, time, grass height, striping direction, mowing width, crosscut or single pass, number of perimeter passes, and number of circles around no-go zones. The customization options are pretty good, and there are app improvements with each update. Now, the "fun" part. There is much try-and-see that is needed to hone in a good mowing. You will likely have to start a mowing job and watch it closely to see if the Luba does, in fact, mow the perimeter you want. Remember, you can adjust the boundaries to straighten out lines and change the path of the Luba that didn't quite work out the way you intended. (You'll need to connect via Bluetooth and re-drive the Luba in your desired path). You're all set when you've watched the Luba successfully start and complete a job! You may notice that the grass may not look like it's completely smooth, and some blades of grass don't look like they were cut; don't worry about that. The beauty of the Luba is that you can run it every day, and every blade will have perfect height after a few mow sessions. Remember, the Luba will take a few passes to cut down the lawn if you don't start with a freshly mowed yard from the get-go. Mow your yard with a regular mower first if you are impatient and can't wait for a few mow sessions to get your lawn looking flawlessly smooth. So, now that I've had the Luba for a month, would I recommend it? YES. But!!!! I'm a handy person, so I don't mind tweaking and tinkering with things to get them right. This isn't for you if you're not that kind of person. Or maybe it is as long as you have someone in your life who doesn't mind tweaking the perimeters and settings just right. I will also say that I've probably spent more time "mowing" my yard than if I had just used my zero-turn to mow the yard. However, the time was mainly spent watching the Luba mow the lawn. Watching the Luba make perfectly straight paths back and forth in the yard is very satisfying. I'd highly recommend watching one work! OK, here's the twist in the story! I love the Luba so much that I decided to buy another one. I have two now. The reason is that my yard is divided by a road, and one Luba mows the areas on the other side of the street, and the other mows that yard on the house side. Buying a Luba is only for some, and buying 2 is probably not the best financial decision. I won't judge your choices if you don't think mine. Some words of caution and advice. - Even though the Luba has a rain sensor, it will not prevent the Luba from starting a job soon after it has rained. The grass will bunch up and clog if you mow when wet. The same goes if you let it cut overnight and it gets damp overnight. Some have recommended removing the guards under the Luba so it doesn't clog when wet, but removing safety parts is probably not suitable for your product warranty (or safety). - If you have a schedule set, there isn't a good way to skip or pause the schedule in the App right now. A quick way to "pause" the schedule is to unplug the RTK receiver on rainy days so the Luba doesn't mow when the ground is wet - The Luba doesn't do too well around rocks and large sticks. It is cutting the grass with little razor blades, so anything that can dull a razor blade will dull the mowing ability. Clean up your yard before you run it. If you do dull the blades, they are super easy to replace. - If the Luba stops for an extended period because it lost signal, it might be turn itself "off." You must hold the power button for about 10 seconds to turn it back on. Hold the power button and look at the front bumper. You should see the green light as you hold the power button. Once on, it will make a couple of beep boops to tell you it's on. - If you ever need to stop the Luba, there's a big red Stop button. If you use it, you'll need to press the grass button followed by the start button to start it back up or the home followed by the start button to send it home. - People love this thing! If you prefer to avoid the attention of a perfectly striped lawn or the fact that people will stop to watch your robot mow and ask questions about it, this might not be for you. - Even though the Luba AWD 5000 can map out 1.25 acres of mowing, depending on the number of passes, no-go areas, width, and the speed you have the Luba set at, you might not be able to mow that whole 1.25 acres in one day. This isn't really a problem because you can have this mowing every day, but a nice mowing may take longer than a single day of cutting. - Unless you really have the lines and grass edges set up perfectly, you'll most likely need to use a string-trimmer/weed wacker to cut areas the Luba might miss. - "Robots took my job!" - my Son IN CONCLUSION: I recommend this for someone who likes to tinker with things and is looking for a way to save time (and money in the long term) on mowing. I don't consider the time I spend tweaking everything to perfection and just watching the Luba mow "mowing time." Once everything is set up, it is a matter of just watching (or not watching) the Luba do its thing. If you've researched other GPS, vision, or other non-boundary wire mowing robots, you can't really beat the Mammotion Luba for the price and value. Finally, buy an Apple Airtag and waterproof container for it and stick it on the Luba so you can track it down if someone tries to take it. Also, get some googly eyes for it. Not much in the way of instructions. I had to move RTK SIX (6) times! Starting over each time. Then the RTK lost signal FOUR (4) times! Starting over each time! I have been at this 1.5 days so frustrating! Then once I moved the RTK the last time I went quickly to map the yard. Success! I got the front mapped. When I gave it a test run, it seem to get confused 3 feet from charging dock. Then it seem to go beyond the outter parimeter…missed that by 0-3 feet in various areas. On the second pass it did work it’s way inward from the first path. Perhaps some of this is user error, trial and error or most likely POOR DESIGN. A repeater would be most helpful to assist in triangulation of the unit to gps signal. Maybe onboard memory of your map and the unit may not have to rely on the wifi gps. I am going to start over again mapping knowing where the unit missed mapped. Fine tuning to get it right. I’m all in on this and am determined to make this work. I do recommend this product with a boat load of patience. This was frustrating to a whole new level. However when I’m done fine tuning and running or just completely fed up. I should be in a good place with the thing and won’t have to worry about it further. Update #1: I was able to create the three zones I needed. Zone 1 has about 50% tree cover and thenLuba does well. Zone 3 has no tree cover and the Luba does great! Zone 2 is 80% tree cover. Still have not been able to mow zone 2. What a pain! Not sure what to do. The cut is actually pretty good. I had some higher grass not terrible but after the cross cut it looks great. Now just maintain and I’m good. I’m changing rating from 2 stars to 3 after this update I also ordered AirTags for this. Update 3 I have completely moved the RTK to far end of the property where I get 360 deg sky. I have to keep the RTK low profile because of HOA. I remapped everything. I successfully completed an entire mow with no stops that required my intervention. I would say yes to the Luba but yes lots of patience. The design needs improvement but once set up and functioning no more manual mowing….just watching with a cold one from inside with the AC. Final summary…this last RTK move to 360 sky was the best. I use just the pole and not way up in the air. Luba 5 has successfully cut my grass on schedule 100% of the time EVEN UNDER MY GIANT OAK TREE. The oak tree covers a good 80% of the lawn. I have noticed a couple times where it stahls out due to signal but does come back to life when signal is regained. Luba 5 can’t mow my whole lawn on single track and recharges and goes right back to low charge pause. Luba 5 finishes the job. I still would like for lawn cutting patterns. Still think there could be improvements but overall…I’m glad I stuck it out. Moving rating to 4 stars. Determination! It pays off! I sit in the porch with a cold one and watch Luba 5 take the heat, pain, time, blood sweat and tears tackling the lawn. Last update…Mammotion beta tests upgrades that are recommend from the field.
