  • Nice machine
Style: Self Propelled Lawn Mower
Out of the box easy to set up. Not brain surgery. Adjusted the handle, added the oil, added gas and set wheel hight less than 10 minutes. First crank took 3 pulls with no fuel priming. Put the gear in 1st gear for test cut. Found the speed to be good. 2nd gear speed was still good. 3rd gear was the right speed for me. Self pulling strength was excellent. Backing up was easy. Turning corners was smooth. I'm guessing the review that said the turning was difficult was by someone who didn't know how to turn a self propelled mower. I found absolutely no issue with turning. I can't really give a good review on the cutting as my yard was a bit overgrown with winter growth but I will say that for what I was asking it to cut, I was happy with the results. Once I get it all cut down and get a few cuts done, I'll add more on the quality of the cut. I don't use the bag so I can't review that part. I prefer the grass to stay on the ground. So after my first cut, which was only about half my yard, I have to say this machine is well worth the price. ... show more

  • Major Design Faults - Very Difficult to Use it - Not Recommended
Style: Self Propelled Lawn Mower
Major Design Faults: (1) Speed - too much (2) Collection Bag design - small opening, wrong hooks (3) Grass throwing window from blade to bag - not sufficient (4) Powered Wheels - doesn't move without power lever (5) Gas guzzler - takes lot of gas (6) height adjuster - never sticks to the setting, etc. I'll try to make it short: (1) When you begin to move by pressing the lever, the machine jumps and runs very fast. Is it a Ferrari? I hit fencing, trees, broke my the vinyl siding...It has six speed levels - LOL. Am I driving a super Car? I used the min speed, didn't dare to try other speeds. That brings to (5) gas guzzler. It is powerful (in speed?) so takes lot of gas. (2) The collecting back has small mount and wrong hooks. Grass will struck at the mouth when you try to throw into the collecting garbage bag. Doesn't move on it own, use hands to clear the mouth or pull the grass into the garbage bag. The two side hooks are U shaped out wards, these hooks holds the running cables, garbage bag, and not easy to take it out and put it back into place. Not at all convenient, you get frustrated with these actions. (3) Usually the opening from blade to bag is 2/3 of back plate. This one has1/4 of the opening to throw the grass into collecting bag. This short opening will quickly block with grass within a short distance and the blade throws all around within no time. Bag is empty, grass is all around the machine. What an horrible design. Every few minutes you have to takeout the bag, clear the opening. That's why, (2) creates lot of frustration. (4) when wheel is not powered, the m/c doesn't move. You can't do manual lawn moving, super hard. For narrow places, you can't power the wheel (bcoz Ferrari speed) and you can't do it manually. What to do? (6) the blade height adjuster never stick to the highest level. It's a wrong design, easily slips to the lowest level. I don't think their design team tested it properly? they have 4-5 levels of height adjustment, consider it as only one level, that is lowest height. Bottom line - for a few dollar savings, I choose this but is lot of pain to use. PLEASE AVOID IT FOR YOUR GOOD HEALTH. ... show more

  • After one use, here's how I found this mower
Style: Self Propelled Lawn Mower
The Yardmax 22 in. 201 cc Walk Behind Self Propelled Lawn Mower has received a lot of criticism, mainly it seems, because it's Chinese-made. "Don't buy Chinese junk," some critics have written. I took a chance and purchased this mower, mainly because of the features and the price and because others have written that it is a knock-off of a Honda engine, which is the best walk-behind mower on the market. The only problem is Honda is no longer making them and a comparable Honda model costs twice as much. I had been using a Craftsman push mower that was so old the deck has rusted through in spots. Although it still starts on first pull (yay, Briggs & Stratton), it's a chore to push since most of my lawn is sloped. So a self-propelled mower was a must. Now about this Chinese "junk." Say what you will about China, but their manufactured products are far from junk, whether its lawn mowers or EVs. When they copy something, they eventually get it right. This is an unboxing review so it's limited, but I can attest that this mower works as advertised right out of the box. Set up was a breeze. I unfolded the handle, added oil (included) and gas as instructed and gave it one pull. It started right up. The mower has six speeds, so I started on one. I read some complaints that the first setting was fast and the others were even faster. In fact, the first setting proved to be pretty slow. I mowed my lawn on the third setting, and even that was just a normal stride. It had no problem going up the slopes and didn't bog down. I mostly let it coast down the slopes, but found it provided a braking action when it was in gear; It didn't speed up or run away. Its ball-bearing wheels also make a big difference. It was much easier to roll than my Craftsman. And a big plus, it took me one-third less time to cut the lawn. It was smooth running and cut evenly. The wheel adjustment worked as advertised. The bagger was easy to use, but because it's bigger than the Craftsman bag, it's also heavier and a little harder to dump. It's best to lift it up between the handles and not straight back. This mower has been on the market for a couple of years, so maybe all the bugs have been worked out. The only question now is its reliability. I won't have that answer until much later, but so far so good. ... show more
