  • Better than expected
I was hesitant to buy one of these, but I'm so glad I did. The cast is heavier than expected, which is good. It assembled in just a couple minutes. I went from unboxing to using it in less than 15 minutes. I'm all about sharp blades, so I was surprised to find the blade was dull, but you actually don't want it sharp, in this case. Overall, I'm very happy with the purchase and definitely recommend it. ... show more

  • Sturdy but blunt
Ordered this to use for my Mom, she primarily heats her home with wood and it's a heft chunk of metal for sure. I think it will stand up well to her splitting smaller logs into kindling to start her fire in the morning. That said, the blade/splitting portion is very blunt/dull out of the package and putting a finer (not sharp but just slightly less steep) would help it hold onto logs better and slide through them when splitting. Overall it's still a good product and I'd consider ordering it again if needed. ... show more

  • Nice splitter for my infrequent wood splitting
This is a great product to have available when I need to split some wood. I usually tried to have a larger splitting stump but they were a hassle. This allow me the ability to easily split wood. It is easy to be use and works great for taking camping. Don't know how it would hold up with significant use, but works great for my needs. Not too big but large enough to split what I have. ... show more

  • Looks to be Well made!
I purchased this splitter to take to our wooded camp site. I have a lot of 5-8” diameter logs that are difficult to split into fire wood with an axe. This splitter makes it into a very simple and relatively easy chore. Which is important! There are a couple of the design aspects I really like. The first is the octagonal base. It makes the splitter very stable and easy to use. In addition, if you have a larger piece of wood or a stump you can put it on, the base has holes for you to use to secure it. The second feature is the two directional splitting face. This speeds up the splitting process in that it quarters the log rather than just splitting it into two pieces. It’s truly as simple as the description says. You place the log so it sits on top of the splitter edge, hit it with the hammer, and watch it slide over the knife edge and split into four quarters. You might find you need to build some confidence in really striking the log with the hammer, but even if you just hit it lightly, you can still make it work. You’ll just have to hit it more times! But that's actually fun! I recommend using a 3-4 lb. hammer with it. A sledge is just too big and awkward and a normal hammer is just not heavy enough. Another use that I really like is that you can take any of your quartered wood and then split them down into as small a piece of kindling as you like. This is really the feature that makes getting a fire started much easier. We use a lot of kindling so this aspect is gonna be great! I am curious how well the three pieces of the splitter will stay together over many uses. The screws that come with it are pretty heavy duty, and they come with loctite on the threads so it may not be an issue. If the screws do loosen up, I’m very comfortable that if I use red permanent loctite on them they won’t loosen up again. Overall, I would say this is going to be a very useful tool over a long period of time assuming the three pieces stay together. Right now, I am saying, yes, I do highly recommend this log splitter. ... show more

  • Sturdy working log splitter for moderately sized logs
First, this is some heavy metal. I was surprised by the weight, which I thought was a good sign starting out. I had purchased one of these in the past and it was deceptively small and it turned out pretty useless for splitting any wood. This thing, on the other hand, did work! It's easy to assemble. There's really no way to do it wrong since the top and bottom parts are essentially the same. There are eight screws to put in, four of them go into a hole from the bracket to the brace, and the other two just tighten up the brackets, but they don't fit into the brace through a hole. I'm not sure if that was by design, but I imagine it does help keep the splitter sturdy on the ground and when splitting wood. Once assembled I had some 1 year aged hardwood sitting under my deck ready to be split! One piece was about 1 foot long and with a few blows of my wedge, I was able to break it up into a few smaller pieces. As you can see, the log only split along the bar the spans between the two vertical brace poles. I had to re-arrange the log to split it the other direction. I tried a longer log that was about 2 feet long. I wacked at this for a while, but I couldn't make it through. I flipped and tried again to no avail. So, if you are planning on using this, I would recommend pieces of wood that are around a foot long. I've only had this for a short time, but it seems like it will hold up pretty well. You might be able to sharpen the edge a bit to get a little better cut, but I haven't tried this. ... show more

  • Super strong and works like a charm!
This works very well! This splitter is comprised of three pieces that you bolt together with the included bolts and Allen key. Assembly was straightforward and took less than 10 minutes. The hexagonal ends have holes to screw the splitter onto a base. As you can see in the pics, you can use this in two positions: one allows you to split the wood into two pieces. If you invert the whole thing, you now have a four-way splitter. Very convenient design! The hexagonal halo at each end creates a stable base and also helps in holding a log in place while you smack it with a hammer. Rather than swinging an axe, a 3 lb sledge can do the work. I used an 8 lb sledge and it made quick work of some oak logs I've had seasoning since last year. Took a lot less effort than swinging that axe! It's easy to take apart for storage but I'll keep mine setup to finish the pile. Great product and I highly recommend it. ... show more
