  • Good drive, one caveat
Style: Optical Drive Pattern Name: DVD Writer
When I received the drive today, there was no surrounding box or cushioning. Someone slapped a shipping label on the OEM box and dropped it in the mail. The box took some damage, but fortunately it did not reach the contents. The drive itself is very compact and quite attractive. The power/data connection is microUSB. The included cable has double USB-A connectors. Some computers do not supply enough juice to run the unit by itself, so there is a second USB connector just for power. I plugged mine into a USB-C adapter, and it runs just fine without a need for the second plug. The drive seems to function just fine. It has read and played Blu-ray disks, DVDs, and an audio CD. I have burned a data DVD with Toast 20, and it functioned just fine (write speeds ran from 4x to 7x, which is excellent). It read from an UHD 4K disk just fine, but could not play the movies. This problem is because of the lack of software for 4K disks for the Mac. It will play 4k files just fine, but the two major software packages for playing Blu-rays on Mac don't yet handle 4K Blu-ray disks yet. Leawo says a future update will address this. Macgo player doesn't say anything yet. One issue: this little drive is noisy at times. When playing or burning disks it's relatively quiet. When spinning up or down or moving the head around, it can be quite noisy. Still, I'm happy I bought it. My experience with it is short, but so far, so good. ... show more

  • Does Everything I Want and More!
Style: Optical Drive Pattern Name: DVD Writer
I bought this seven months ago in October 2020 and it's been great so far. I am a Mac user and I am able to rip Blu-rays with MakeMKV, I have done DVD and Blu-ray authoring (with a separate application, not the included ones because they’re PC only) and I’ve burned dual-layer Blu-ray discs and dual-layer DVDs. It should also work for triple layer discs such as 100GB Blu-rays, but I’ve not tested triple layer discs, only dual layer. When I’m burning discs, it’s remarkably quiet; at least, I can’t hear it over my MacBook Pro fan unlike other drives I’ve had. I love that this drive has a pop-out disc tray and a pinhole ejector. When discs periodically gets stuck inside, you can stick a pin in the hole and get the disc tray to manually open. It plays all of my commercial 1080p Blu-ray movies. I don’t own any 4K Blu-ray movies nor do I have a computer monitor that supports 3D video, so I can’t speak on the 3D & UHD capabilities of the drive. Software: Mac Users- We’re on Our Own I primarily use the Mac and I am aware that the included Cyberlink software is several years old and works on the PC only. Mac users don’t need any extra software to rip with MakeMKV, but you will need to go find your own software to play Blu-ray movies such as MacGo Blu-ray Player and you’ll likewise need to hunt down a decent Blu-ray authoring software (Roxio Toast 19 Pro is rubbish but it can potentially get the job done as long as you use Verbatim discs only). PC Users- The Software is Old but Adequate PowerDVD 14 is old but it does exactly what it says on the tin- it plays Blu-rays. Power2Go 8 does CD/DVD authoring and data CD/DVD burning, but it only burns data Blu-rays, it doesn’t do Blu-ray authoring, which is unfortunate. If you’re a PC user that wants to do Blu-ray authoring, you’re up the creek without a paddle using the outdated bundled software that comes with this drive. Power2Go 11 and newer allegedly does Blu-ray authoring. Verdict: This Drive is Amazing All in all, I’m very happy with the drive. It’s been quite reliable. Mac users shouldn’t count on utilizing the software, but the drive itself is capable of doing literally anything- writing dual and triple layer discs, playing UHD, 3D, etc. This Blu-ray drive has earned its 5 stars. ... show more

  • Extremely light, feels kind of cheap
Style: Optical Drive Pattern Name: DVD Writer
I picked this drive because I recognize LG's brand and could find solid specs on this device. Amazon is filled with off brand, poorly described items, with few or no reviews. At least I could find a manufacturer website and support page for this device. That said, It is not the cheapest or the most expensive. It's made entirely of flimsy extremely light weight plastic. There are rubber feet that keep it from vibrating too much, but it could scoot right off a hard surface while in operation. It moves forward about an inch a minute. It's quite loud, but maybe I just forgot how loud spinning media can be. It's a tray loading snap in style drive so you can load up those small or weird shaped discs you have. USB-C would have been nice, but the fact It only requires a single micro USB connection is a huge plus. You may need to plug in to 2 USB-A ports, but it seems like a single works in many cases. Back of the device says it wants 5v 1.8a. It works with macOS 10.14 out of the box and it handles reading and writing of optical media you may still come across. Since most computers don't have an optical drive, I got this to fill the gap, get things off of old CDs and DVDs, and also to try archiving data on those 100Gb discs as a back up to my back up. The included software is Windows only and includes a fairly useless manual as 13 individual TIF files... Overall it's a clean, simple, portable drive that can read and write pretty much any optical media you'll come across. On Mac you'll likely need additional software for certain tasks but there are no required drivers. ... show more
