Mine were assembled with the top plate outside the rubber. The picture shows it this way by I will scratch your crossbars all up. Metal on metal. I re-assembled mine with the plate inside the rubber wrap so it won’t damage the roof rack. My picture shows the difference. Left is how they came right is the way I set mine up. I mean really, why coat the bottom plate so it won’t damage the roof rack and leave the top plate uncoated? ... show more

Bought these for a road trip I was going on to haul the kayaks. First trip, going down the road, suddenly here a thump and my kayaks are hanging on the side of my door. Luckily there was a test stop close. Brackets completely broke- not bent or anything but the aluminum itself snapped. I bought 2 sets but taking the other set off my rack because I don’t trust them. One of the reasons I purchased this one was that its designed to fit an Aero Crossbar and it mentioned rubber protectors so the crossbar does not get damaged. I noticed that the rubber protector was UNDER the metal brackets so it was not providing any protection. I read another customer's comments that it was incorrectly assembled and I agree. I remounted the metal bracket so the rubber protector was OVER the metal bracket and it works as advertised. ... show more

So far, I have used these racks to transport two kayaks on 2 occasions. Both times, I have been happy with the results which means I haven't lost the kayaks (Chuckle). The trips have only been a couple of hours away from home but those did include freeway travel and high winds. The hardware is a little questionable so I have changed out some of the bolts and I don't like that there is only one bar holding (one wing nut thingy on each side) each holder on to the rack. Somehow I think they could have put two bars (two wing nut thingys on each side) but like I mentioned, they are holding up. Would I use this to transport my kayaks on a couple of thousand mile trip? I am really not sure. I have only been using them for a about a month so I will have to re-evaluate after some more time. I will come back and update this review. ... show more

I was going on a trip where I would need to take 2 kayaks with me so I purchased this rack. Mind you, the 2 kayaks that I have are fishing kayaks, which are about 70lbs each, so they're much wider and heavier than most. Before installation, I noticed that one of the screws/brackets was not tight enough to lock in place. Looking closer, I realized that the screw and nut were stripped and unable to be tightened any more. I received this rack the day before I left on my trip, so I didn't have time to ask for a replacement part, so instead, I used a few extra straps to ensure that both kayaks were securely attached to the rack and my car's roof rack. The extra straps seem to do the trick. One thing I really like about this is that when not in use, the vertical section will fold down horizontally. Hopefully the rest of the screws hold up. Had j-racks previously that did not fold & I keepmy car in garage so had to assemble each time I wanted to transport 2 kayaks- these folding ones are awesome because I can leave on & park in garage after folding them. The only difficult part was the metal plate that goes on your car rack was outside of the rubber protecting guard & had to be reoved and reasembled with plate inside the rubber. Was very difficult to get screw off & back on. Other than that...perfect! Haven't used yet so will review sturdiness after I use them. ... show more

I have not hauled kayaks yet on my car but will do so this weekend. I will have to purchase straps as the straps that came with the racks will not work to secure kayaks safely as was noted by another consumer. My son installed them and did so quite easily. These are of very good quality and well made. I compared them to some of the cheaper versions and these are definitely worth the small extra amount especially if you can find an Amazon Warehouse deal as I did. They worked perfectly to hold our Kayaks for an 800 mile trip. Will update if they fail but overall they are very good quality. ... show more
