    • Stylish and Functional, But Beware of Conflicting Care Instructions
I have mixed feelings about this knife set. First, I need to address the discrepancy between the product description and the care instructions in the box. The description claims these knives are dishwasher safe, but the instructions clearly state they should be hand-washed. So, which is it? For someone like me who doesn’t enjoy hand washing dishes, this feels misleading. That said, if you’re okay with hand washing (or willing to take the risk with a dishwasher), these knives have a lot going for them. The purple color scheme is striking—definitely more modern than traditional, which might appeal to many. Personally, I prefer the classic look of a wooden block, but I can see how this plastic design might be more practical for others. I wasn't expecting much from a low priced set of kitchen knives but these really surprised me. They are amazingly sharp, sturdy and does a great job of cutting food! The block is heavy duty and although I'm not a fan of purple, the pros outweighs the cons by far! The handles are rubberized and really well made! I highly recommend this set to someone looking for a new set of knives for their kitchen! ... show more

    • A very nice set of inexpensive knives
Let's get one thing straight right off the bat: these are inexpensive knives and they have all the hallmarks of inexpensive knives. The blade steel, identified only as "high carbon stainless steel", will not keep an edge long but will be easy to resharpen and won't rust or corrode. The blades are thin (2mm for the large knives, a bit over 1mm for the smaller knives) and have just adequate stiffness. Only a portion of the blade depth - about a half-inch - is ground and it is a hollow (concave) grind. That makes the blade nice and thin behind the edge but the makes the edge quite delicate. The thin stock and the hollow grind means these knives are great slicers but the edge is not strong enough to stand up to heavy work like cutting through partially frozen foods or any but the smallest bones. The handles are inexpensive injection molded plastic and the blade tang does not extend the length of the handle, which makes the blade attachment a point of weakness. On the other hand, these are really nice inexpensive knives. Their edges are quite sharp and they do a great job of slicing tomatoes, vegetables, boneless meat and the like. The handles are reasonably comfortable and, at least initially, they are firmly attached to the blades. The knives have a good design for their intended purpose and the manufacturing quality is very good, and they also look good. The kitchen shears are sturdy enough to be useful. The knife block - possibly having a wood interior, possibly not - is reassuringly heavy and has an attractive uniform matte black finish. The block has a couple of pull-through sharpeners which should never be used on an expensive blade but are fine for maintaining a working edge on these inexpensive knives. That brings us to the real benefit of these inexpensive knives (beside their low cost): you can neglect them without guilt. You can clean them in the dishwasher instead of lovingly hand washing them. You can use them on hard cutting boards without agonizing over the destruction of their fine edges. When they get dull, you can just zip them through the sharpeners without concern for how badly the edges are getting scored and beat up, and you will be happy with the adequate edge you get instead of demanding the razor edge that a fine knife deserves. I am a knife snob and have many fine and expensive knives that I lovingly care for, but even I have a stock of inexpensive knives like these that I prefer for some uses, and they are the only knives that my wife will use for fear of messing up my good knives. I am giving this knife set to my daughter, who works full time and has two little boys. She wants to spend her time and energy on them rather than fussing over fancy knives, and these knives will be perfect for her. ... show more
