I am by no means a knife expert. I just know what I like and what I don't like. This set is a nice looking set. The knife block feels nice and solid and doesn't slide around on your counter top. The knives all came boxed separately and the tips were protected. They feel nice in your hand, not bulky or a heavy weighted feeling. My previous knife set was fine, just started to show some wear and tear so figured I'd update it. I was shocked at how dull my old knives were once I started using the new ones. Even washing them revealed how sharp they are. I have a scrub brush that squirts soap out. They were sharp enough to cut the bristles off without even trying too. The price seems comparable for a great set like this. I'm sure professional chefs would prefer another set but for your everyday, average person they work great! I always hand wash my knives so I don't allow them to rust. Only time will tell how well the built in sharpener works and how long they stay sharp. But right out of the gate, it's a great set! Would make an excellent present for newlyweds, new homeowners, etc. ... show more

We wanted to get a new set of knives to replace the Wustoff set we got for our wedding nearly 25 years ago. This is a very nice set for a relatively unknown name. The Wustoff set was decent (expensive too), but have plastic handles, and blades that don't hold an edge that well. This set seems to be made nicer. The pakkawood handles are comparable to the Shun knives we also have. Very well made and classy looking. The full tang gives these knives a well balanced feel in your hand and add to the overall quality. Often in cheaper knives, the finish is subjectively lower quality - but not with these. There is a smooth transition from wood to steel. Very impressed with the finish quality. As for the blades themselves, only time will tell. We haven't used them enough to require sharpening, but will be curious how well the built in sharpener does. If it doesn't do well, I can always hone on my whetstones. The set is fairly well put together with most of the knives you would need in a kitchen. Only thing missing would be a cleaver. This set looks, feels, and performs much better than the price would imply! ... show more

I am very impressed with the Brodark full tang chef knife set. This set of kitchen knives appear to be of good quality, with full tang blades and solid, comfortable grip wood handles. Those wood handles are one potential downside - means you shouldn't place them in the dishwasher, but then again, you should generally hand wash all your knives as the dishwasher can really beat up the blades. The knives fit well in the provided block, which keeps everything organized in a nice, tight small-ish space. The block has an integrated sharpener, which after a couple of trial uses, I find to be a much better accessory than the usual sharpening steel, as most people don't use, and probably don't know how to properly use, those steels. The sharpener is easy to use, very similar to a countertop sharpener, just draw the blade in and out of the slots. While not heavy, the knives have a good solid heft to them, but are easy to maneuver and use. The 8 inch chef's knife is my preferred size as it's an easy length to work with; I'd rather that the bread knife was a 10 inch blade instead of 8 inch, but this one works well on all but the larger round bread loafs. ... show more

These knives look great, but more importantly cut great. Blades have some weight to them as they should - they are sturdy and not flimsy at all - but still taper smoothly down to a razor edge. Much, much nicer than my old set. Included wood knife block has an attractive dark finish and an integrated sharpener. Knife selection is ideal - has all of the knives I use most and just as importantly does NOT have knives that I never used from my old set (like *mini* Santoku) taking up space in the block. With the kitchen shears, I can finally stop using sewing scissors to cut up food. I do have a few nitpicks that are minor enough I did not detract any stars. One steak knife has a slightly different angle between the handle and blade than the others, causing the end of the handle to sit about 1/4" vertically out of line with the others. The shears require a screwdriver to disassemble for cleaning rather than having a slot-release when fully opened. The block's finish appears to be a gel stain rather than a penetrating stain - nicks and scrapes on the surface show the bright white wood underneath. ... show more

This set looks and feels very high quality. The knives came very sharp and the built-in knife sharpener is a convenient and easy way to make sure they stay sharp. There are grippy feet on the bottom of the knife block to keep it from moving around on the counter which is a plus. My only negative is that when you are putting away your knives and you miss you will stab the wood and is noticeable. It is a minor flaw but could end up looking a little warn over time.
