  • Does the job
Value is in the eye of the beholder…and the price point at which you got it. I would not recommend it at the non sale price now that I’ve seen it at 40% off. That said, feels durable, has a nice corrosion resistant finish, and is usable out of the box, though my edge was very rough with a noticeable burr on one side. Easy enough to sharpen with a file. Seems to hold the edge fairly well. Large enough to hold all but the largest logs. Designed to be easily mountable to a large log, stump, or 2x12! ... show more

  • Wow! I don't know why I thought this would be smaller...
...but this thing is a total BEAST! The weight and size of the box really surprised me. I guess I assumed this would be for splitting really small kindling. It's a seriously heavy-duty monster of a workhorse that bolts onto a big round. The blade is sharp enough, and the angle of the bevel is blunt enough that it may never need sharpening if I don't hit it with metal too many times. The arms on the sides can easily hold a heavy piece of split firewood or a 6 or 8 inch trunk round or limb section. This isn't a toy or novelty. It's not temporary, as in, "Let's see how this does until it breaks". This is a serious piece of very useful equipment that's going to make splitting kindling a whole lot faster, easier, and safer for years and years to come. I can't see it ever failing, but if it did, it would be easy enough to weld it back together and maybe add some more meat to the blade while we're at it, like they do with the sacrificial weld-created "teeth" on snow plows and backhoe buckets. I love this thing. It's a heavy one. I look forward to it taking regular beatings as a valuable tool in our arsenal of chore helpers, with an air of stoic solidarity, and for a very, very long time. ... show more

  • Larger than my other cracker
a) Arrived well packaged and in good shape. b) I love that it is a able to accommodate wood that is couple inches larger than most of these I have seen. Of course that means a little heavier. ( This can take 9 1/2 logs, my other one which is the only size I have seen before is 7 3/4 inch) Doesn't sound like much, but that is a huge difference! c) Has built in carry handle if you care to bring camping with you or have multiple places to use it. Has 4 anchoring holes to attach to a splitting block ( I only need two to hold it in place temporarily. d) Splitting edge is quality and should last a long time , as long as I don't hit the edge with my sledge ( I made a little rhyme there) . E) one minor annoyance is since there is no ring around the midsection, if you are splitting short logs, they slip through and fall to ground. If there was a ring around, it would contain the wood so no bending over to further split. It is also a bit spendy , but allowing the larger girth of log, it is a good value. ... show more

  • Perfect for Making Kindling for My Chiminea!
I've been looking for a sturdy, effective kindling splitter, and this one is exactly what I needed. I use it to split kindling off logs to fuel our chiminea, and it works like a charm. The cast steel blade is sharp right out of the box, and the heavy-duty construction feels solid—no wobbling or bending, even after repeated use. I love that I don’t have to swing an axe or risk injury. Instead, I place a log piece on the splitter and use a one-handed hammer to split it down into the perfect size for quick-burning kindling. It’s easy to use, safe, and requires minimal effort. The base is stable, and with the pre-drilled holes, I can mount it to a stump for extra security. It’s also portable enough to take on camping trips or keep near the firewood stack for whenever I need to prep more kindling. If you’re using a chiminea, fire pit, or wood stove, this is a must-have tool to make kindling fast and safely. Couldn’t be happier with it! ... show more

  • A little challenging to get to logs steadied when using something to hammer it with large handle
The pictures on the advertisement show someone holding a piece of wood in one hand and then hammering with the other, but if you have a larger splitting maul or something like that it's a little more difficult to hold the piece of wood with one hand and hit it with the other. Also, logs don't typically start off all that split up, so holding larger pieces with one hand isn't as convenient. The blade isn't so sharp that it doesn't require a decent amount of force anyways. What I ended up doing is basically trying to get a log to balance in such a way or where I didn't need to hold it and then hammer it swinging the splitting maul. For logs already split somewhat, I could wedge a smaller piece of wood along side the wood I'm trying to hammer, such that it remains vertical over the blade before I hammer it using the hammer side of a splitting maul. One thing that's really nice about it is that when you do get a log started, it's not like normally shopping wood, where you always have the log fall over or you don't hit it in the exact same spot. ... show more

  • Not bad.
I found that I couldn't use it with a full size log. A thin split piece or a round branch the size of my forearm worked well. I quickly filled up my kindling rack once I started using it. You don't need a full size maul to split it, but I found a medium size single handed one works ok.

  • Great for cutting into kindling
I'm pretty good with an axe but not good enough to get thin pieces for kindling. This log splitter works great and it was much easier to use than I thought it would be. I have a 5lb mini sledge and it did the trick with minimal effort. The blade is sufficiently sharp and this whole thing is extremely sturdy. Reasonable price for a quality little log splitter. ... show more

  • Very useful
I would highly recommend screwing it down using the holes on the base to something sturdy like a heavy log. It's a very solid construction and does exactly what you'd think it would. Makes splitting smaller pieces of wood much easier. Handles pretty large pieces of wood as well.
