We bought two of these to use on a vacation to Costa Rica with our 4 and 7 year old boys. While both can swim, neither are strong swimmers and we thought these would be helpful - and they were! They are secured with two horizontal straps and one vertical that attaches the back of the vest to the front going under the body and between the legs. That strap is also padded, which makes it more comfortable. We didn't hear any complaints from either of the boys about that. The buoyancy provided was more than enough to allow them to dog paddle, and the distribution made it easy for them to maneuver with. The downside is that one of them quickly began to fray at the top on the second day of heavy (4+ hours a day) of use. As a result, sand started to get into the vest through the ripped stitching and quickly weighed the vest down to the point of it being a safety concern. We would empty it, but eventually just stopped using it as it was too hard to monitor throughout the days at the beach. The other one held strong through the trip, but was used more sparingly as it was the 7-year-old's and he didn't want to wear his very much. ... show more
