  • Works as it should
I live in a place without insulation. When it's hot outside, it's crazy hot inside. When it cold outside, it's freezing inside. Whereas I can add clothing, or switch to shorts, my fish need to be keep between 68 to 80F. So if the water temp is above 70, the fans come on, when it's below 68 the heater comes on. Easy set up. You set the temp you want to maintain, the set the + degs temp when you want the cool circuit to turn on, and set the - degs temp when you want the heater to come on. As for the accuracy, it's inline with other thermometers, so I'm assuming it's about right, within a certification, but there is no NIST documentation... so ballpark temps I'm guessing. It has a memory for temperatures when power goes on/off as well. The suction cup, for inside my tank, didn't really attach well, but it kinda sticks. Overall, works perfectly for what I need. ... show more

  • Great for wintering pond
I have an above ground goldfish pond I built here in Texas and needed a winter ice solution. It doesn’t get icy often (maybe once or twice a year) but when it does it’s usually extreme temperature shifts (this winter it was 65-70 the week before we were in the teens for a week) and that’s not good for the fish….slow gradual cold shifts they can adjust to but these are goldfish adjusted to 110 degree summers not freezing winters. This worked perfectly. I used electrical boxes for the plugs to keep water out and was able to watch my temps from the window. My little heater could not keep the temp at the 55 degrees I set the water for once temps were in the low teens but that was no fault of the inkbird which worked perfectly (water temp was 45 when we were in teens) and did what I really needed which was the gradual decrease in temp so my fish survived the extreme swing (all of them did). I didn’t set the inkbird up for the cooling function but I did play with it while getting everything set and that worked well. Works so well thinking about getting a couple more for our indoor salt tanks for increase temperature stability. ... show more

  • Best InkBird controller for aquariums
There are three InkBird controllers with aquarium probes right now (Oct 2020). I've tried the 306, the 306A (wifi), and this 308S in my fresh and salt water tanks. The 308S is the best for aquarium use. The 306 and 306A temp display almost never changes. It may be tracking the temp internally as it changes, but if the display doesn't update, I don't trust it. Even though the wifi feature on the 306A is nice, it has an annoying alarm feature that makes it unusable for my purposes. I use heaters with internal thermostats paired with an InkBird so I have two levels of protection. I set the InkBird target temp slightly higher than the heater's target temp so it will stop a runaway heater. In any other situation, I want the InkBird to keep power applied to the heaters. But the 306A will alarm if the water does not reach the 306A's target temp after a user-selected time ranging from 1-72 hours. There's no way to turn that feature off. The 308S temp display changes frequently by 0.1 degrees as the water temp changes, so it's clear that it actively monitors temp. It will alarm at whatever cold/hot temp you set, but it does not have the annoying time/alarm function. It also has a separable temp probe that can be easily replaced. The downsides are it doesn't have a wifi function, and the max sensitivity for target temp settings is 1.0 degree (instead of 0.1 degree on the others). The temp can be calibrated up or down if it's not reading accurately. The 308S is also for heating and cooling. I use it connected to a heater and a cooling fan for one aquarium. For the others, I don't use the cooling feature, but I connect two heaters to the "heating" outlet using an adapter. ... show more

  • Exactly what I needed
I used this to convert a trunk freezer into a cold plunge tube. It keeps the temperature exactly where I want it to be.
