  • Scientifically sound yet incredibly approachable!
How to Grow a Baby strikes that perfect balance of being incredibly informative and educational—yet accessible enough for someone who doesn't "speak science" like me. Between the adorable illustrations and the "Take Action" breakdown at the end of each chapter, this book is deeply actionable. I'm someone who sees and understands the value in leading a holistic lifestyle—yet that's not how I was raised, and I'm certainly not the person who eats 100% organic or composts—so I wanted a pregnancy book that would give me the modern, science-based, non-consumerist-driven tools I needed to grow a healthy baby, without the judgment or "hippie-dippy-trippiness" that can sometimes accompany that realm of thinking. This HIT THE NAIL right on the head for me. While her journey isn't mine, I feel like I have the author with me throughout my pregnancy—when I remember to tilt my pelvis a certain way when walking my dog, when I remind myself to change up the seated position I'm in while reading, when I reach for kimchee or apples cooked in butter as a healthy snack. The last thing to note is this book also does an amazing job of exposing the miracle that is parenthood and growing a human, without being too precious about it. She offers up all of these biological and evolutionary insights that I (as the kid who was never interested in science) had zero idea about—the way your breastmilk varies from morning to night, how we literally get a dopamine hit when we're caring for our babies, etc.—which just further helped me see the RAD sh*t my body is doing right now, despite the less-than-ideal parts of pregnancy and body changes. All the stars for this one! ... show more

  • Evidence-based, Informative, and Beautiful
This book could not have come out at a more perfect time for me as a first-time mother. Amy Hammer's eloquent narrative style presenting evidence-based, practical, and insightful information is visualized beautifully and memorably through Michelle Lassaline's art. The two together make for a book that you almost forget is giving you very real and practical information because it is so fluidly written and visually stimulating. It helped ease many of the fears I had about becoming pregnant, now being pregnant, giving birth, and raising a child from what to eat, to what products to use on my skin, to how to stay active, to the labor and delivery itself. I now have a lot less fear surrounding pregnancy and have this book to thank. ... show more

  • A Must-read for new and soon-to-be parents.
As a father of three young children, this is the book I wish had been published about a decade ago. It is packed full of well-researched and actionable information that can be applied immediately. Even though the content is science-backed and serious, the writing is delightfully charming and the illustrations are gorgeous. How to Grow a Baby reminds me of books by Emily Oster - evidence-backed, practical, and utterly inspiring. ... show more

  • Not enough direct citations
also a bit biased on the natural birth method A good and easy read Nice illustrations but I'm not sure I would call this science based due to lack of citations in the text to where you can find the full info.

  • Beautifully written, gorgeous illustrations!
I'm not pregnant, but one day I hope to birth a child. I think this book is essential reading for someone like me who doesn't know much about pregnancy or childbirth...It's full of well-researched information, and is written with a kind, thoughtful and modern voice. The illustrations are breathtaking and informative. This book is a treasure! ... show more

  • Political Agenda
I didn’t buy this book to read politically charged BS. Why does everything have to be political these days. Can’t I just read a book about the facts on how my baby is growing not your opinion on gender roles and feminist drivel.

  • Loved this book
I only wish there was more on pelvic health recovery at the end. Easy to read. Very peaceful and uplifting.

  • This book is ILLUMINATING
Currently pregnant after having quite a struggle to get here. This book reinforces many gut feelings I had about pregnancy after watching so many others around me go through such varying and beautiful journeys. It puts the person growing the baby first, considers the most holistic route, and nurtures the body mind and soul. I feel gently reminded of my own power when I read a section about the part of the journey I am experiencing. It allows me to make really informed decisions and gives me the permission I need to take care of myself in order to take of my baby (and by extension take care of our whole environment). ... show more
