I have been working with a new Atomstack A5 Pro laser engraver for several weeks. My engraver was supposed to come with a metal plate to protect the table, but they stopped including it so I’ve been using random boards. This works fine, but cutting will burn the boards below so I expected to just need to replace the board from time to time. I was watching a review of the Atomstack on the Aurora Tech YouTube channel, and in it she recommended a “honeycomb bed.” I was unaware of these, but she said it would prevent scorching the edges when doing laser cuts. I ordered this one to try out, and I am very glad I did. It makes a huge difference in the usability of the engraver. This package comes with a metal plate (so now I can get rid of my scrap boards), the honeycomb bed, four stick on square rubberized feet, and four “T” shaped plastic pieces. The Ts are meant to poke in to the honeycomb holes, with the top of the T holding down the board you are engraving or cutting. This works well, and I like it better than the one I was going to order, which used large metal flaps that clipped on to rails on the edge. I think this design is simpler and easier to use. I spent an evening with this bed and everything was much easier. I could now hold down my thin 12”x12” boards and easily position them by moving the bed or laser head around. When I had just been placing my boards on top of other boards, I’d often accidentally move it and mess up the engraving. I did a half dozen tests last night, etching test patterns and cutting test shapes. Comparing what I cut before I had this honeycomb bed is visibly different - far less (almost no) burnt edges. Very nice. Everything came well packaged, but there were no instructions. I didn’t even know what the T parts were. I found them mentioned on the Amazon product page, with a photo. I’d think a simple sheet of instructions would be a nice addition, even if it’s pretty simple to figure out. (Though I am wondering why one of the sides of the metal plate has a protective sheet of plastic over it. I just have that face down for now, plastic intact, but I wonder if that side is different and meant to face up. No clue.) My next project is to build brackets to hole my engraver and this bed in place. If you are new to laser engravers, and don’t have a honeycomb bed yet, get one as your next add-on. Well packaged with a custom foam insert in a sturdy box. Comes with honeycomb bed, aluminum under-sheet, and small acrylic pegs. What follows is my husband's review: I was using it within the first hour out of the box. All I had to do was set this in the work area of my Ortur Laser Master 2 and reset the height of my laser to accommodate the new focal distance. This makes cutting a breeze. I cut out a movie camera business card prototype for my son, I messed up the settings but I managed to cut through wood which I had not done before (but tried). With some refinement of my settings I am sure that I will be able to cut shapes from basswood pretty clean. I plan to try my hand at acrylic at some point as well. Wish me luck! The platform included four honeycomb pegs. There were no instructions in the box so I had to figure out what the funny little T-shaped things were in a baggie. Of course, they are pictured and explained in the pictures on the listing, DUH! They fit into the holes in the honeycomb as guides for your work and are really handy. Just place them in the area where you intend to place the work piece, setup your positioning, then you can just butt your work up against them for each successive piece of the same size and shape. Very handy. All-in-all this is a great upgrade, even for newbies with diode lasers. Would definitely recommend. ... show more

The 2-piece design is clever for protecting both the piece being laser cut/engraved as well as the surface underneath. The flat reflective metal plate alone would partially protect the surface underneath by reflecting the light and absorbing some of the heat. However, the heat absorbed could accumulate and char both the surface underneath and the working piece. Since the reflected laser would continue to travel in a straight line, then the reflected laser could bounce right back up and damage your equipment (yikes). So I would not recommend trying to use a metal plate alone. The thickness of the honeycomb plate means that the focus point of the laser is much further from the working surface. The honeycomb piece is painted a matte black to reduce reflections and help absorb more heat away from the surfaces. The honeycomb structure both allows air flow to better dissipate heat and to cause the laser light to become trapped by having little straight path of escape. If a laser does happen to pass through to the bottom of the honeycomb, (it will be weaker at that point) and it would just reflect off the bottom plate surface. The bottom plate comes with a protective blue film which should be removed prior to use (that side up). The honeycomb plate has some internal supports as pictured. The edge of the honeycomb was not painted as pictured, but that is more of a cosmetic issue since no one should be engraving/ cutting that close to the edge anyway. I did not notice any other flaws or issues. This comes with some magnets to help keep the working pieces in place which is a nice feature as well. ... show more

This honeycomb panel also comes with a metal sheet which is perfect for protecting the table underneath the panel. The honeycomb panel is good for keeping the laser from scorching your material like it would if it were just sitting on a metal plate or desk.
