  • It is just for small logs
This is really nice. It is small, but that's what I needed it for was small logs. It works well, the blade is sharp. A good workout.

  • In less than 2 minutes you'll have kindling.
In about 2 minutes I was able to dice up a 2x4 and a 2x6 to make a nice batch of kindling. Probably enough for 2 or 3 fires. All there is to know is it's way easier and safer than using a hatchet to make kindling. Wear gloves to protect your hands, and safety glasses to protect your eyes. This can also be used to split logs, but the logs can be no more than 6 inches at it's widest. It's really great at making kindling, or making the small stuff if you have a tiny wood stove. It seems sturdy. The only reason I took 1 star off is if you were using this with 6 inch logs and a sledge hammer continually the welds may not hold up, but that isn't the intended purpose of this. ... show more

  • Better Than Aiming At A Wedge
I ordered this because I have a huge stack of maple branches on the ground that need splitting. It's good this arrived before I sawed them to length. This stands 12-1/2" tall and accepts wood up to 6" in diameter. This means to be sure of a complete, clean split you want wood 10-11" long to have it fall out. A little taller would have suited me better. The rest is down to the condition of the wood and the size of the hammer. But for me, the main benefit is the larger area to strike rather than having to aim at a splitting wedge. ... show more

  • Great for Beginners
I wanted to invest in a cast iron wood splinter because I depend on burning firewood during the winter. It is also a good product to own if you purchase wood wholesale from local vendors. There have been times when the wood is not cut evenly or too solid and burns unevenly. This is a smaller size splitter more for kindling. I have no intention of swinging an axe and I feel safe using this as a newbie to splitting wood ๐Ÿ˜Š. This splitter does not come with a hammer so you will need to own or purchase one before you can start splitting. If you decide to secure the splitter there are holes provided but no screws. ... show more

  • Fun and helpful addition to our campfire supplies!
We have a vacation getaway in Northern Michigan. It's out in the woods, surrounded by both healthy, standing trees, and fallen dead ones that we cut up for recreational campfires while we're visiting there. Our adult son has taken on firewood wrangling responsibilities, and it's not unusual to see him outside, with a hatched and a piece of wood balanced precariously on a stump and held with one hand while he attempts to break it into smaller pieces with the hatchet in his other hand. Sometimes it works well, sometimes it's less-than-ideal. This is certain to make for a safer, more satisfying -- dare I say 'Fun'? -- endeavor! This splitter is very heavy duty, and also heavy enough to stay in place during the process. It can be also be attached more permanently, by running bolts or screws through the base into a stable surface, but this isn't 100% necessary for occasional use. Construction appears very robust, with thick, smooth welds, giving us confidence that it'll last for years. Our getaway is closed for the year now, but I did take the splitter out to my backyard when it arrived yesterday. We have a fireplace here at home, so I grabbed a couple of pieces of firewood to put it to the test, using a dead-blow hammer. (Didn't see my small sledge, but this was just a test...) I tried it on some actual firewood and on a couple of short sections of 2x4 dimensional lumber that have been in the burn pile for a couple of years. All the pieces I tried split very easily with minimal effort and not a lot of hammer blows. I think it's gonna work great when we get it up north next spring! I'll give this 5-stars for an initial rating and hope that it justifies it in the long term. I think it will! Thumbs-up! ... show more

  • Really tough!
A handy and easy to use item that does a great job on medium size logs. It wonโ€™t handle big, heavy logs in our experience. My husband loves the size of it and how thick the steel is. Simple to set up and I like the size of the firewood we end up with. Perfect width for the fireplace. Can be left outside with no worries. Handles rain and snow just fine. Good quality and not real expensive. ... show more

  • Really great for kindling
These things are really great for kindling. They make fantastic gifts for friends or family members, especially those who just got a fire pit. Good for folks who aren't comfortable splitting small pieces with their hatchet, but also just nice to use for more experienced folks. It allows you be make somewhat precise splits because you can place the wood exactly where you'd like to split it. Don't try to split much more than a 4"-ish sized piece, so this should already be from split firewood. Use something like a 3 or 4 lb sledge to split, a regular hammer might be just a little too light. Don't force something 6"+ wide into these and then be surprised when you tweak it a break the cast ring or base. It's a very good idea to anchor these to heavy wooden base, like a splitting block. Solid buy! FYI: I received this for โ€œfreeโ€ as part of the Amazon Vine Voice program but will still pay income taxes on the value of it, kind of like a contractor. ... show more

  • Heavy Duty Fire Wood Splitter
I was immediately impressed with the weight and edge of this wood splitter. It's got a nice heft to it and nearly cut myself when I ran my finger on it to test the the edge of the splitter's blade. The base has a place for 4 screws so you can mount the unit in place and the diameter, at 6.5 inches, is large enough for most of my needs. When I put the splitter to the test I was really impressed, i have some aged oak that I use for my pizza oven and this thing made quick work of it. The main thing to make sure is that the splitter blade is following the same direction as the grain of the wood. Once you line it up give it a few light taps with a hammer and the wood pretty much splits itself. We have a wood burning fireplace, a wood burning pizza oven and a wood burning stove so this thing will come in handy and allow me to split my wood to the proper size for each application. Super happy with this splitter. ... show more
