I purchased the Modernist 7-piece set because I don’t often find need for other, more specialized knives, and because I know this brand is associated with chef Gordon Ramsay—so I figure it must be a quality product I can get without spending a small fortune. When it arrived, the finish between the front and back sections of the block was cracked, revealing a gap between the two, and the lettering on the face was smeared. I also noted it was made in China. I returned the set in exchange for a replacement. When it arrived, it appeared to be in acceptable condition except for a bit of rust on the blade of the serrated knife. I am about to either make a warranty claim or return the product again. Just received my Henckels 7 piece Modernist knives set. I've read a lot of the reviews here with the blocks or the knives being broken or rusty and I was a little worried abut it but my set came in pristine condition. It was packed well and looks great on the counter top. I love the self sharpening block. Even though it's not a solution for dull blades it is good for casual maintenance. I'm a amateur cook and wanted a nice knife set and these are the sharpest knives I've ever owned. I'm very happy with the set so far. ... show more

After looking at about 100 knife sets in the store and online, I just couldn't come to a decision on the best set of knives to get my wife for Christmas. Wanting to please the chef in our home more than surprise her, I asked her to look at the top ten I had narrowed it down to and let me know which she thought were the best bang for our buck. She has been using them for about two months, and so far, these have not disappointed. She is so very happy with how easily these cut. To me, knives are not a big deal. To her, there's a world of difference and these really fit the bill. She loves the feel, the weight and their performance. Her favorite blade in the set is the pairing knife, which she uses just about daily. The block is beautiful and the set looks nice sitting out on the counter. This is a stylish knife set, and the handles are heftier than most other knives which allows better control, I think. The self-sharpening feature is convenient too. I still expect to have to sharpen them, but probably less often which is nice :)
