I was wanting an enclosure to put a laptop optical drive in, and that's what I got, for less than I could find an empty enclosure for, with next day delivery. It came with an apparently used drive (see photos), with the top cover removed, and heavy wear evident on the bottom of the drive unit. It identifies as a HITACHI-LG, GU90N DVD+/-RW drive. I read the reviews before ordering, so I'm not surprised in the least at what I got. It has an "integrated" USB cable, which is simply a Mini-USB A to USB-B 2.0 cable. At least with this setup, I'll never need to dig for a cable to plug it in, which was part of my reason for choosing this unit. Is this a 5-star device? No, certainly not. But neither is it total junk...it's like a value menu chicken sandwich. I wasn't expecting much, and what I got was basically what I was expecting for the price. ... show more

My PC did not have a CD drive installed, and I missed being able to listen to CDs or view the photos that I still had on CD. This external CD drive does the job. It was easy to use for me and I'm no technological wizard-to view photos on my CD, I simply plugged the drive into my USB3 drive on my PC and loaded my CD. I did not have to download any software for this. I tried viewing some DVDs I had-I did have to install software for that, but I was looking for a CD drive more than a DVD drive. I had a problem with the first drive I received-the eject button did not work properly. Amazon did promptly send me a replacement drive after I contacted them about the issue, and the replacement one worked fine, including the eject button. This drive comes with a cable that is perhaps 4" long making it awkward to attach to a desktop tower. I ended up having to place it on top of the tower. The reason I purchased this drive was my internal DVD reader was no longer working and no matter what I did I couldn't get the PC to recognize my internal drive. I plugged this external drive in and my PC all of sudden recognized my old drive and this drive! However, when I tried to load a DVD into this external drive my PC wouldn't recognize it ... but it did recognize the DVD in my internal drive. So, in the end this turned out to be a $22 fix for my PC. ... show more

I have a few dozen DVDs that I cannot find in streaming services, and hundreds of CDs. Despite also having streaming services, I sometimes like to listen to something from my collection while I'm working, but my laptop does not have a built in player. This is an inexpensive solution that works well for that purpose. The only thing is that this will not play DVDs through Windows Media Player if you are using Windows 10 OS as I am. Worked for what I needed, Down loaded some guitar licks from my Boss RC3 looper, burned them to a CD. Played them back on my car player. Played back just fine. For the price it did more than expected. Keeping in mind you don't get a lot for $22.00 these days.

Works great. Just plugged it into a USB port and ready to go. Old PC died and my replacement doesn't come with one built in. I'm old and have have PC games that require the CD to be mounted in order to play. And I use it to burn files to CD/DVD which are cheaper and easier to mail than a USB stick.
