Description

1 NATIONAL BESTSELLER • NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • OPRAH’S BOOK CLUB PICK • Born to an American myth and raised in the wilds of Graceland, Lisa Marie Presley tells her whole story for the first time in this raw, riveting, one- of-a-kind memoir faithfully completed by her daughter, Riley Keough. In 2022, Lisa Marie Presley asked her daughter to help finally finish her long- gestating memoir. A month later, Lisa Marie was dead, and the world would never know her story in her own words, never know the passionate, joyful, caring, and complicated woman that Riley loved and now grieved. Riley got the tapes that her mother had recorded for the book, lay in her bed, and listened as Lisa Marie told story after story about smashing golf carts together in the yards of Graceland, about the unconditional love she felt from her father, about being upstairs, just the two of them. About getting dragged screaming out of the bathroom as she ran toward his body on the floor. About living in Los Angeles with her mother, getting sent to school after school, always kicked out, always in trouble. About her singular, lifelong relationship with Danny Keough, about being married to Michael Jackson, what they had in common. About motherhood. About deep addiction. About ever-present grief. Riley knew she had to fulfill her mother’s wish to reveal these memories, incandescent and painful, to the world. To make her mother known. This extraordinary book is written in both Lisa Marie’s and Riley’s voices, a mother and daughter communicating—from this world to the one beyond—as they try to heal each other. Profoundly moving and deeply revealing, From Here to the Great Unknown is a book like no other—the last words of the only child of an American icon. Read more

  • RE: Unexpectedly Raw
When I started the audiobook—I have the hardback for the pictures of course—I was a little skeptical. The stories LMP and her daughter include, shared in Riley’s voice and Julia Roberts standing in for LRP, are a little scattered and erratic, to the point that I wondered if I would finish. But the sadness and insight and addiction and parallels and yes, the celebrity, draw readers in. I mean, the stories about MJ alone are exciting, but not in a way that he or his story is betrayed. And then suddenly, the story concludes, gently, succinctly, and sadly. This book does an amazing job in illustrating how complex and confusing and beautiful and empowering and suffocating complex grief can be and often is, and how often we lean into it, honored to be consumed by it regardless of how dark, and how painful joy can feel, experiencing that after the loss of those we adore and always long for. I am so grateful to have leaned into this piece. Do yourself a favor and invest in the audiobook…listening to LMP, her voice and her words, is moving and startling and sad and, raw, especially when she asks what being strong has ever done for her. ... show more

  • Raw, mystical, and refreshingly honest.
I had no idea what to expect from this book. I knew Lisa Marie had died before her book could be completed, but having her daughter add her own words to fill in gaps was inspiring. Both voices in the book were tender and emotive. It was sad to read about a lot of things but enlightening as well. The words were lyrical and the grief thick as the story told about the chain of lives and lasting genetic and supernatural imprints. I felt honored to be given a behind the scenes look into a very complex, spiritual, and historical life. Being the daughter of an icon and legend who was way ahead of his time and birthed a genre of music that exists to this day was definitely a hard weight to carry. Lisa Marie was special and Riley is amazing. What a beautiful artistically written book. The family history will be well preserved by her. ... show more

  • Interesting but sad
Fast read; it arrived and I read it in one sitting. Interesting story but truthfully the only person I even partially liked was Riley Keogh. I will say that it’s amazing Lisa Marie Presley was as normal as she was given the terrible childhood both parents gave her. Still, it’s a compelling look at one of the most dysfunctional families ever. ... show more

  • So well written.
So many emotions. Lisa Marie would be so incredibly proud of the job Riley did in writing such a heartfelt, thoughtful, inspiring, heartbreaking, insightful biography/autobiography of her Mom. Lisa Marie was such a talented singer, songwriter and I will miss knowing there will never be more music from her. ... show more

  • Tragic Tale
Lisa Marie was born an American princess except that everything that could've gone wrong did. This autobiography was particularly poignant having been finished, posthumously, by her eldest daughter. This is an honest, raw read with no happy ending.

  • Heartbreaking and beautiful
Written in alternating dialogues, Lisa Marie’s section taken directly from her audiotapes, and Riley filling in with her own knowledge and observations, this book feels like an intimate conversation where both Lisa and Riley are at their most vulnerable. Lisa is open about the trauma of losing her father (“I was becoming numb to everything…”), the feeling that her mother never wanted her (“My mother told me that she’d thought about trying to fall off her horse to cause a miscarriage.”), and her general insecurity; Riley states: “She wasn’t sure what her value to the public was other than being Elvis’s daughter.” Lisa opens up about her drug use as a teenager, and then again later in life, her general distrust of people, as well as her marriages and music career, and how motherhood gave her life meaning (“I fell in love with being a mom…being a mom was everything to me.”). Riley reminisced on happier times where the family “felt very normal.” Holidays, vacations, going on tour for Lisa’s albums, Riley describes a “magical” childhood for both herself and her brother, Ben. Riley talks about the bond between Lisa and her son, Ben (“I had an instinct that Ben was the love of my mom’s life…they shared a very deep soul bond.”). The chapters about Ben’s suicide and Lisa’s subsequent death are brutal. I was left with a feeling of heartbreak and admiration for Riley and her younger sisters. Throughout the book, Riley is the calm within the storm. Nonjudgmental, observant, she fills in the parts where Lisa didn’t reach, not feeling like an intrusion, but a necessary presence. This book is a heart-wrenching, beautiful read. Hearing both Lisa and Riley’s raw, human voices in these pages will stay with me. ... show more

  • Painfully beautiful
As someone who is grieving her mother who was also grieving her son my whole life, this book was beautiful. It’s not a American literature masterpiece but it’s real, straight to the point, and raw. It’s written as if Lisa Marie was talking. I’m surprised to say this because I didn’t expect the book to be grief focused but I believe anyone grieving could benefit from this book simply because it shows that grief is a universal feelings we all just deal with that emptiness differently. It made me feel normal for missing my mom the way I do and not so bad about the dumb decisions I made when I was younger. It made me realize the only way through this life is love. Grief is unconditional love with no where to go and how we process snd redirect that misplaced love can affect everything in our life. Grief never goes away, it doesn’t really get better we just keep moving. Thank you Riley for make sure this book was released. Lisa Marie reminded me a lot of my mom with her raw, gritty personality and even some childhood trauma they both faced. I read this book in one sitting and will read it again. ... show more
