  • It's a self-defense tool too
No joke, if you can swing this thing, I would imagine it would be as effective as a baseball bat, in defending one's self. All kidding aside, we bought this to put important documents in. I also like to hide some cash in it too. I can't say I'm going to throw it in water or set it on fire to test it, but the walls of this chest, do feel like they are protective. One note of advice, if you're coming from another brand of these chests, be sure to check the weight of this one. I originally bought this for my elderly mom. She had one of the other brands, believe Sentry. She had a hot water heater to bust in her apartment and wanted a waterproof chest in case she had any future problems with water. When this arrived, she couldn't lift it, at least not to open it and remove anything in it with any confidence since it's quite heavy. I weighed them, this First Alert is 7 pounds heavier than the one she had, which she also struggles to hold for very long. She re-gifted it to me. If nothing else, it's a good, piece of mind, piece of protection. ... show more

  • This is a whole lot more and a whole lot less then I thought I was getting.
For 20 bucks I had no idea I would be getting such a quality chest , its heavy and very well made with what seems to be a secure locking system. It is smaller then I imagined 0.17 cubic feet but that's my fault for not looking closely at the specs. but for jewelry and cash and a few important papers it will work fine. The information provided states all contents should be in sealed containers and the chest should be opened every two weeks and allowed to air out for a minimum of 20 minutes. I never thought about the fact that this chest is fireproof and waterproof and would need to be aired out on a regular basis. What I would have liked is a chest to lock up and forget about until I needed some of the contents ,the airing out sounds like a pain that I will forget to do. That having been said I'm going to keep this chest because for what I paid for it I'm not going to send it back , and I will put it to some use. ... show more

  • So far so good
"This thing is sturdy," was the first thought that came into my mind when I lifted this out of the box. I am pretty sure I can drop this from the top of my old apt. building onto the street and it will stay intact. Make sure you air the inside of this sucker out before placing your important documents in here though. I didn't read the instructions that came with the safe and stashed some stuff in there right away and they felt damp to the touch. I'm not quite sure why that happened, but apparently, if you air it out for a day before placing papers in there, you won't have this issue. I want to note that this safe has not been fire tested yet, so I cannot comment on how well it fares under fire. I hope that I never will though... ... show more

  • Purchased due to testing performance.
I read an article from the fire department and the small and medium First Alerts were the top two survivors. This is what I based my purchase on. I like everything about the box except for the seemingly flimsy lock latch. This box is obviously not for theft deterrence simply because of it's size and plastic lock latch. But if you want to protect it from water or fire, it is the inside that matters and it held up in a real life comparison test. Only the large Sentry box survived, all other Sentry's items were burnt and unusable. Firemen's final words of wisdom was to consider a safety deposit box from the bank as well. I also bought the moisture absorbing gel packs but my box arrived dry as a bone. I will be sure to air it out every two weeks as per the instructions. I also plan on keeping documents/paper in SEALED PLASTIC just in case. ... show more

  • AVOID BUYING...Poor quality
The safe remains waterproof for under an hour with the caveat to put docs in a sealed plastic bag! The lock is very flimsy and easy to break. So disappointed. One is given 2 keys with purchase. The keys have a plastic top, which melted in a recent heat wave. What a waste of money and I missed the return window buying this piece of junk. ... show more

  • Compact, but holds all my documents
I read all the reviews on several different waterproof safes and in March purchased this one, along with silica drying packets. Upon arrival, I found the interior to be much larger than expected. I put all my documents into gallon ziploc bags with 2 silica packets in each bag. I put jewelry in another bag with more silica packets. I placed 2 flash drives and some discs in another bag with the last of the silica packets. I've had to go into the safe 4 or 5 times since and there is no sign of mold and no damp smells. I feel confident that my important papers and jewelry will be protected in case of flood or fire. In fact, I feel so confident that I am purchasing 3 more safes (and more silica packets) to give as holiday gifts for my brothers. ... show more

  • great product ... needs some work
The first one I received, I tried to pick it up by the handle while open. The Handel/latch assembly broke off. I sent it back for a replacement. When the replacement came I super glued the handle/latch assembly to the body.. I think it is a good Fire and Water Chest.. It is NOT a secure chest and can be opened easily even when latched and locked... I would buy another one for fire and water protection. It is small enough to easily hide for security... ... show more
