  • Beefy kindling splitter
We have a firepit and a huge pile of pieces of 1x4 that I've collected from pallet wood. I typically split the 1x4s into smaller pieces and use it as kindling but the way I've been doing it is sort of tedious and sort of dangerous--basically standing the piece on end and whacking it with a hatchet while holding it up with another scrap (because my aim isn't good enough to have my fingers within inches of the business end of the hatchet). It's slow going and imprecise at best. This kindling splitter is going to make it so much easier! First off, I underestimated how beefy this thing would be. It weighs 6 lbs 2.2 oz without the safety cover. And speaking of safety covers, it's great that this thing comes with one, because the edge is sharpened to a knife edge. While you might not quite be able to shave with it, it's far sharper than I expected it to be, so the edge guard is a must have. Even the safety cover is made from a super durable, thick plastic and feels like a quality item rather than an afterthought. This splits kindling easily with just a slight tap from my hammer. I don't plan on using this to split large logs, since I think it would be difficult to hold the log balanced on top of this while swinging a full sized maul/sledge hammer, but I can see where it would be good even for splitting smaller logs into kindling pieces. Overall, I'm pleased with this and think it'll get a nice workout once the warmer weather returns. ... show more

  • Solid and sharp
This comes pretty sharp. The wedge has bolt holes that will take a 1/4 lag screw. That's what I recommend to attach it to your block. Its easy to attach to a stump or even a wide timber. You will need a mallet to hammer the kindling onto the wedge. I have a Klein lineman's hammer that works well. There might be a better hammer to use, that just what I already had. The protective cover is more for shipping. If you leave the wedge permanently attached to something, you need to figure out a way to put a better cover on it. Especially if it's below waist height. I would hate to fall on this. Maybe a small plastic bucket or something to that effect. A 5 or 6" PVC cap might work. Overall a nice hunk of metal for splitting kindling. ... show more

  • Maybe Kindling but not Firewood
I should have paid attention to the description better as this is too small for splitting much of my firewood. 3 stars is due to the fact they advertise this as a log/wood splitter. To be clear, when you try to split any 14”+ wood, the splitter gets stuck in the wood. Shorter pieces and kindling are no problem and for that purpose alone, this splitter works as good as anything I’ve found but to be honest, I prefer a good hatchet over these devices when it comes to shorter kindling. Almost a perfect product… just wish they offered it in a 12” or 14” version… or that they didn’t advertise it as anything but a kindling splitter. ... show more

  • Great idea!
I spent 12 years heating a house with a small highly efficient Scandinavian wood stove. Every season, time was spent gathering and processing firewood. Cutting kindling was a necessary chore every few weeks and was done primarily with a hatchet sized splitting maul sitting on a stool with gloved hands turning split firewood into thin sticks during a Montana winter. Always being careful about where my hands were while splitting. This Speed Force splitting wedge would have been a huge improvment. No sharp edged maul or hatchet with a hand below it holding an ever thinner piece of stove wood. Nope, just a small mallet while holding the wood OVER the cutting edge. Simple, safer, more efficient. Just screw this wedge into a wood round and go to it. This wedge is robust, sharp and comes with a nice thick orange safety cover when the wedge is not in use. I'm no longer cutting wood in that quantity, but I am older, probably not as nimble but I still need a bit of kindly now and then and really looking forward to using this wedge without worrying much about my hands while splitting. Solid 5 stars. ... show more

  • SIMPLE! EFFECTIVE! Sturdy made...worked well!
Not a lot to say about such a simple item. I usually split larger logs into half or quarters and use these to "fine split" into smaller pieces. With a 10 pound maul/hammer about 8-10 inch round will split well enough, any larger needs a pre-split with an ax or long handled splitter. I mounted it with longer lag bolts to a large stump I got from a tree at our place in the woods. Was really sharp. Hold the log with one hand and hit with the 10 pound hammer allowed me to fine split several types of logs into kindlin sized pieces that an ax is NOT the best tool for. I do not have enough logs to split on our wooded property to justify the cost of a mechanical splitter. Old School is the next best thing. I doubt it will break down if cared for and kept sharp. ... show more

  • Helpful Tool for smaller splits
This firewood splitter has already come in handy this very cold January in the Midwest. It arrived nice and sharp, has a nice sturdy weight to it, and was easy to attach to a large old piece of wood and get to work splitting smaller logs. Perfect for them and not needing to expend as much energy swinging an axe, it's much easier to use a hammer with the splitter. ... show more

  • Easy to use kindling splitter
This kindling splitter is made from cast iron and coated in a weather proof paint. It is designed to be kept outside. Picture is with the blade cover attached and bolted to a stump. Easy 4 screw attachment. It made quick kindling out of mixed dry hardwood with a small mallet hammer. Some was knotty and some straight but it powered through it. Perfect for backyard bonfires or fireplaces. For less frequent use you can simply set it on a solid surface and split away. This is a good value and easy and safe to use. ... show more

  • Use quality screws and practice!
Using longer screws to mount it will help keep this baby secure. It does the job well esp. if you practice a bit...which it will take time to master. But for splitting wood and such it does a great job. Very affordable and will make short work of your firewood tasks. No issues with build quality so far! ... show more
