  • Solid construction, Excellent Instructions, Good Value!
Color: Grey
Although I have been a sewer for many decades, this is my first experience with an overlock machine. Wanting one for years, I never made the leap because of the price. When this one came across my radar, I decided to order it and am so glad I did. The instruction manual is exceptionally clear and covers everything you need to know including maintenance and even sewing examples. It is different enough from my two other regular sewing machines that I would have been quite confused and maybe not proceeded without the very clear information. It also comes with a CD but I have not yet viewed that. The machine seems really solidly built. The metal inner workings are contained within an outer plastic case. This is actually good because it is very heavy but still within my limits to move on my sewing table. It is also compact so it doesn’t take up a lot of extra room but has already easily handled finishing edges on a fleece lined blanket. It operates smoothly and any glitches at this point are due to my novice skills. It comes with a good size piece of muslin fabric for practice applications. If I heed the maintenance instructions, which are simple, I anticipate this machine will last a long time. I think this overlock machine is a very good value for its solid construction and excellent instructions. ... show more

  • sturdy machine, concerned about customer service
Color: Grey
I have never had a serger but have always wanted one. I am not an experienced serger user so I have nothing to compare this one to. That being said, I do have a fare amount of sewing experience and that helped me in working with this machine. The manual is detailed but with no experience I was feeling a bit daunted by threading it and getting it going. There is reference to using only 2 or 3 instead of 4 threads. I think this is a great feature and I will try it out eventually, but the manual is a bit light on explaining that usage. More research needed. There is a seam guide included. I went to Youtube to see how to attach it and found nothing for this particular model. I saw another brand and model so I know the purpose, but I can't figure out how to put it on this machine. I tried to contact customer service through the website and so far haven't received any satisfactory response. I also can't see where I can get any other accessories as mentioned in the manual. I did a few test runs after threading the machine. During the threading process, I was able to pull some through on the leader threads that were in the machine when it arrived. I had to do two by hand as my knots didn't hold, but the directions for threading are pretty clear and the machine is well marked and fairly easy to thread. Sewing is very fast. I'm not used to that much speed and wish I had a little more control of that. The tensions were a bit off, but I am getting used to having to balance 4 threads. Seeing the correct one in the sample piece that came with the machine and looking at incorrect tension pictures in the manual helped my get the right thread to the right setting. The cutter is a bit of a trick. It works great. The plastic bin that attaches is really hard to get off once attached. (Attaching is tricky.) And, it has to come off to get at any of the tools or to thread the machine. I am tempted to not use it lest I break something critical trying to remove it. My biggest concern is that there is no more help beyond the manual. The manual is good, but getting parts and instructions on how to use them would be helpful. ... show more

  • Speeds up making pillowcases
Color: Grey
This server has significantly speeded up the time it takes me to make pillowcases for veterans. I did struggle a bit learning how to thread and operate the Serger but I did figure it out. It has been wonderful sewing and cutting the fabric with this serger. The zig zag it does prevents the fabric from fraying. I can make pillowcases much faster. The more I use it the easier it gets. ... show more

  • A professional-level machine with some flaws
Color: Grey
As a costumer for ballet and opera, my sergers are my best friends -- but they are fickle and a broken thread can mean a half hour of rethreading and troubleshooting. So the thought of having a back-up serger makes my little heart flutter with joy. This FEIYUE is no back-up machine, however! It's a heavy-duty workhorse with functions and adjustments that I've never seen before. Nice!! It's built on a HEAVY metal frame, and it's bigger than any of my other sergers. My feeling is that the core of this machine has been built to last. It's definitely not a beginner's machine: it comes tested and threaded, but it does not come with practice spools in place: you need to be able to handle adding new spools from the first moment. That said, the instruction diagrams on the machine are the best I've seen. The process is straightforward and all the hooks are easy to access. Pros: -- Easy to thread and secure thread pathing -- Solid metal frame -- Easy to open left-hand panel for blade adjustment/threading/cleaning -- Neat tool stowage inside the front panel so you'll never lose your screwdriver and tweezers again! -- All the adjustment knobs you will ever need -- a learning curve is involved -- Beautiful thread tensioning out of the box -- Thorough instruction manual. Also comes with DVD and thumb drive manuals Cons -- Noisy and bumpy action -- this is not a quiet machine. It's not so loud that you think there is something wrong, but it is too loud to easily hold a conversation while using. I have quieter machines. Related to that, it is as bumpy as a two-stroke engine: you'll want a FIRM table under this. My family complained that they could feel the action through the floor 10 feet away -- The plastic portions of the body do not live up to the metal frame. The swing-out left panel does not return to sit snugly in place around the plate -- it either comes in too high or too low and does not feel sturdy. Similarly, putting the thread catcher in place is a bit fiddly until you carefully follow the instructions. Even then, it got stuck once when I needed to remove it. In general, the plastic portions just need to be a bit more solid and fit together a little more predictably For a machine with so much promise and potential, the flaws I found in my first hour of use are surprising ... show more
