  • Rusted after the first winter
This did a great job keeping the water deposited in the coop but developed a few rust spots after one winter. That was disappointing.

  • Wish it lasted longer.
Lasted just 1 year. Worked for one winter (and couple weeks of a second winter). We used it in our chickens’ plastic 12 gallon water equipped with nipple dispensers. Their water is located inside of an unheated insulated coop. Temperatures can drop as low as -5°F but most commonly stays between 10°-20°F. I’m disappointed it didn’t last longer. Not entirely sure what went wrong with it. We do have hard water but we always keep the water full and we wrapped the cord with heavy duty cord protector so there wasn’t any damage there. The heater was safe in our plastic waterer as it never melted it or anything. Just seems like a lot of money to need to spend to replace every year. ... show more

  • Works good
We use ours in a 5 gallon plastic bucket and it has worked consistently throughout this winter. No issues with frozen water. However, I have noticed rust on one of the screws, but it has not spread to the whole unit yet.

  • Heats quickly!
This product saves me from having to bring kettles of boiling water out to the coop every morning when the temps stay below freezing. It will keep water very warm if you leave it plugged in. When I've forgotten to unplug it, the chickens stand around the waterer like it's a hot spring! I believe it's best used to keep water from freezing solid to begin with. I plug it in for about 10 minutes morning and night and that keeps the layer of ice from getting thick enough to block the drinkers. The drinking cups sometimes still need to be de-iced, though. I use it in a 5 gallon plastic bucket with two drinkers. ... show more

  • Works well but try it out immediately
Automatically prevents ice and keeps water slightly warm, fits well in my copper birdbath, birds ignore it. It's the 150 watt model, which seems to be enough. Doesn't need any cleaning. The cord is about 6 feet long. Metal fitting around where cord attaches corrodes away; after two years my last heater gave a mild shock when I moved it to clean the birdbath. A brand new one, the 250 watt model, that I had in reserve and put into the bird bath a few weeks ago didn't work at all. The return date was past unfortunately so I had to buy another new one. However, this type of birdbath heater is probably the best on the market. ... show more

  • One season, rusted
Designed to sit in water, it does its job. At first. But one season used and it rusted enough to no longer work. So I have gone with large warming bowls this year.
