  • Great performance. I’ve named it Beast. Great trimmer and will cut thick branches, but heavy.
Pattern Name: Attachment Style: Hedge Trimmer + Power Head w/2.5Ah Battery
I like that it is a multi head tool (PH1400) with a large array of attachments. I purchased the multi tool with the hedge trimmer attachment. The trimmer lives up to it’s claim of cutting 1 inch growth, which is why I call it the Beast. If you don’t want it cut, don’t get it close. It is very maneuverable with dual blade rotation. The blade will rotate to a vertical cutting position or a horizontal position. The blade will also tilt on it’s axis allowing you to easily cut the top of a large shrub, or get behind a wall hugging shrub. If it has any drawbacks, it would be the weight and possibly the battery duration. The Hedge trimmer is definitely heavy. This is necessary in order to have long reach, as well as the ability to cut thick growth. This is not a judgement of the weight, just pointing it out. Because of the weight it performs as advertised. The battery life is adequate, and possibly excellent when changing to slow speed. I have an older Ego blower, which uses the same battery. It’s not that old in terms of hours used, and it’s charge duration has weakened significantly. I understand I can purchase batteries with a higher aH rating, but cost is a definite factor. It would be nice to see some type of battery trade in program for customer retention. In summary, I would definitely purchase again, and recommend to anyone. Neighbors have stopped and asked about when I was trimming the top of an ornamental which is 12 feet high. Granted I was on second rung of a small ladder, but that’s impressive. ... show more

  • Great power & stamina w big battery that's about the size & weight of an electric lawnmower's
Pattern Name: Attachment Style: Trimmer + Edger + Power Head w/5.0Ah Bat...
Day 2 -- Okay so far... I've only tried the string trimmer. The variable throttle on the powerhead trigger is a GREAT FEATURE. Massive heavy battery, but really impressive power and operation time, more than I ever expected. Warning: for those used to the lightweight battery-powered Black & Decker strimmer models, you'll be shocked at how heavy this equipment is, even excluding the huge battery -- it's more than twice the weight, so you're going to be pumping some iron, so to speak. I'll give the edger a try sometime soon. More thoughts 9-1-23: the complete assembled powerhead and string trimmer attachment is also longer, as well as heavier, so you need to be careful when you pivot as you're holding the tool horizontally -- you might accidentally bump into things. With 5 ampHr battery inserted, center of gravity is a little before where the trimmer attachment inserts into powerhead wand. Not a bad idea to get the shoulder strap or some other ergonomic device to help you with handling this. ... show more

  • Well built, lots of power
Pattern Name: Attachment Style: Trimmer + Edger + Power Head w/5.0Ah Bat...
Great unit for the couple of times I have used it. Replacing a four stroke multi tool. This has as much if not more power, decent battery life with the 5Ah battery. Small pick - the trigger lock is definitely set for a righty. And as a lefty it is noticed, but useable. Other than that small pick, it is solidly built, well designed, and oodles of power. That said, it is heavy. Heavier than my four stroke unit was, which was already heavier than a typical two stroke. It’s a few pounds, but those pounds add up quick when holding an edger steady or sweeping a trimmer with control. I got the shoulder strap and the battery link backpack to get the weight out of the back of the unit and on to my back in a backpack. Still good balance. Made a big difference! ... show more

  • Good power even with the edger, battery life is good but it's heavy
Pattern Name: Attachment Style: Trimmer + Edger + Power Head w/5.0Ah Bat...
I replaced my old Husqvarna (Husky) gasoline combo trimmer/edger with this battery Ego model. The two units are similarly priced at $399 for each version. The Husky is gas/oil 2 stroke and obviously, the Ego is battery powered. The price on the Ego moves around like the commodities market - I got it for $399 and 2 days later, it zoomed up to $489 on Amazon. See the attached photos for the two models and attachments side by side. The Ego is the brand new green one and the Husky is the beat up red one. The battery arrived about 1/2 charged and I put the Ego with the edger attachment to work immediately even with the 1/2 charge. The Ego edger had plenty of power for the edging job, it has 2 speeds while the Echo is variable speed. The Ego edging head is heavier than the Husky but it also appears much to be much better quality than the Husky edger head. It's just heavy. I'm a big guy, 6'1", 210-pound lifetime gym rat but I have shoulder problems (3 rotator cuff surgeries) and this unit is uncomfortably heavy. I ordered the shoulder sling and it works well but needed more padding. I reviewed that item separately. My 60-year-old female neighbor who is very fit tried the Ego with the trimmer head attached and it's too heavy for her. Swapping heads with the Ego is simple. It’s a little more touch and go with the Husky and the flex shaft in the Husky model likes to fall out if you flip it around. That’s not an issue with the Ego model. I thought it was ironic that the Ego edger/trimmer contained what appears to be a spark plug wrench - see the other photo. In reality, that wrench has a larger hex wrench on the end of the handle for use with the edger head. Why Ego does not include one single wrench with 2 different sized hex heads is a question for them. The ergonomics of the Ego are good. There does seem to be significant wiggle in the Ego power head handle under power and that makes me wonder how long it will last before it fatigues and possibly cracks or breaks. I have a 1/3 acre lot and after edging around all the concrete and the beds plus trimming 2 times, I've used 20% of the battery. Overall, the build quality of the Ego is absolutely first rate. I will not miss screwing around with gasoline, mixing gas and oil and the spills Husky model. The Husky gas tank is really small, it’s easy to overfill and I was constantly cleaning up small fuel spills. Time will tell how the Ego fares but it’s build quality and performance so far has been 4 stars - minus 1 star for the weight issue. Hope that helps! ... show more
