Developed specifically for the UK Ministry of Defense and are NATO approved, these waterproof and windproof matches from Coghlan's burn even while wet. Ready for all extremes of weather, the match can withstand immersion in water and cannot be extinguished by wind, making it ideal when out in harsh conditions. The match head will burn for 10 seconds, and the waterproof tub comes with two striker surfaces. Since these are going into my bug-out bag as part of my emergency kit, I wanted to make sure they work well. Boy do they ever. The little pill bottle they come in seals nicely, so it'll pack well. It's also reasonably tough (although I wouldn't expect it to survive getting stepped on, just that it'll live fine in your pack). It's going to keep the matches quite dry. The top and bottom of the bottle has striking surfaces for the matches too. After receiving it, I immediately opened it up and tried one of the matches. They fire up quite easily and then burn... and burn... and burn. I mean it really burns. You strike this match, you have fire. I tried blowing it out, blowing pretty hard too. While the flame was visibly reduced, it didn't go out. I didn't count it exactly, but I'd estimate that just the first half of the match burned hotly for about 10 seconds. Plenty of time to get a little tender and kindling lit. I'm quite pleased to have these in my emergency kit. ... show more

Regular high-wax hurricane matches with wooden stems. I wasn't impressed with the outer case, as the one I had actually cracked open as I twisted the top off...luckily I was restocking my fluorescent orange match container, so the plastic case they came in, didn't matter as much to me. I think this was a 'old' batch off someone's shelf...but they looked to be in 'like new' shape, and Coghlan's makes good camp and field gear. ... show more

    • You can do better.
They're okay matches. They light, they burn. But if you're paying for "Stormproof" matches, you want something that can't be put out by water. The UCO Matches will withstand a full dunking while lit and come back to life. These Coghlan's go out if you wet them hard. It's not a stretch of the imagination that hard rain could put it out. The must-burn part of the match is relatively short (the red part) and doesn't always transition flame to the very-short stick handle. The matches overall are too short to really set thicker kindling alight, so expect to chain a few of them if your kindling isn't ideal. The burning red tip makes quite a cloud of stinky smoke, like fireworks or a road flare. If you are in still air, you might be smelling it for a while. I'm giving it two stars because there are better matches out there for the same price. The UCO matches in the orange container are better in every way. ... show more

I make my own waterproof matches using strike-anywhere matches wrapped with a toilet paper square that's been folded three times and dipped in molten wax... and these are better. They're like the perfect combination of waterproof and windproof. I also bring along a couple gag birthday candles which can't be blown out and light one of the waxed matches or one of those gag candles using these matches and both can stay lit for a long time. ... show more
