  • Works as intended - great value for the money
I paired these with the BCB stove, which makes for a really nice budget setup totaling about $12. If you bend down the metal tray in the BCB stove, you can fit a 12-pack of these tablets plus a mini lighter. The tablets do have a slight smell to them, but the smell is pretty mild and not noticeable through the plastic they come wrapped in. Don't worry about the smell, it's really not as big a deal as people make of it. As long as you're not sticking them up your nose it won't bother you. They do produce a little bit of soot, which can be easily washed off your pan. Be realistic though, even wood produces soot. So this is just a normal part of cooking over a fire. Once again some of the review blow this out of proportion. One tablet was able to boil a couple cups of water. I cooked a pot of instant mac & cheese using just 2 tablets. So they really are a great value for the money. Part of this is probably due to the wind guard on the BCB stove, which does help. These tablets make a great backup for when you can't make a fire. Sure, if I had to cook over them 3 times a day for weeks on end, it would get annoying. But for cooking a quick meal while camping you can't beat the convenience and price. ... show more

  • Extreme caution
Just did a test on one of the cubes and prior to writing this review. Forgot to take a video but it’s a burning cube w a blue flame. It worked w no problem and caught the flame in 1 second. Most of my emergency kits have a couple of these packed. Chemical fires are easy to start and keep burning. I have used similar fuel tablets for 45 years now and believe in what they do and how they can used. They are resources not toys and need to be treated that way. Along with the well deserved 5-star recommendation, I’d like to add to the manufacturer warnings as well. Not something you want to keep in a pocket or leave rolling around loose. Safe storage is a really big deal w these types of products. ... show more

  • Failed to boil water, but still useful
I had high hopes for these after reading the reviews, but they are just not as good as I hoped. Still they are useful. I did two tests with them using two different setups. I used an Esbit pocket stove and ultralight aluminum mug without a lid with in one test and the Esbit 3-piece Lightweight Cookset with lid with the other. The conditions were mildly windy on a warm summer day, and I used an aluminum foil windscreen with each setup. Water was straight from the tap and not hot. I used one fuel tablet with each setup, and each mug had one cup of water in there. Each tablet burned for right about 10 minutes, although the last couple of minutes of burn was so low as to be almost useless. The tablets did not produce anywhere near the flame that an Esbit tablet produces. In both cases the tablets failed to bring the water to a boil, and were only capable of bringing a single cup to a low simmer for a minute or two. I was pretty disappointed, as by comparison the Esbit tabs will usually get a cup to boil within 4-6 minutes or so in the same setups. Also, the tablets did not burn completely. Esbits burn completely and leave very little residue, while these each left a cone of unburnt fuel stuck to the burner after they had gone out; it seems the ashes stopped the flame from reaching the inner core. I had to cut it out with a knife in each stove. I suppose you could probably reuse it, but I'd rather it simply burned the first time around. So, in light of these tests... Pros: - very compact compared to Esbit tabs, can carry many more - would work well as firestarters - perfectly adequate for heating water for instant coffee, hot chocolate, etc - did not have any odor I could detect (unlike the Esbit "dead fish" smell) Cons: - will not bring water to a boil - more difficult to light than Esbit tabs - left unburnt core in each burner / did not burn completely While they failed to boil water, they are still very useful, as most of the time I do not actually need to boil water. They get water plenty hot and would likely warm up say, a can of pork and beans just fine, so they are quite useful in that role. I can also carry alot more of them than I can Esbit tabs in the same amount of space. For many roles the Esbits are really overkill and you may end up wasting some of the fuel, and for those roles these will do the trick. It would have been nice if they could have boiled water - would've gotten 5 stars from me then. As it is, I will carry a mix of Esbits and Coghlan's, and save the Esbits for when I really need a longer burn or a more intense flame. These will do the trick for everything else. ... show more

  • Handy item
Sometimes, you just need a little flame to boil some water, warm your hands, or to help get a main fire going quickly. These are small, light weight, last forever until you use them and are well worth the money for the peace of mind they can give you.

  • Surprised!
I was surprised as to how great these little fuel tabs really work! Each fuel tab burns for 9 minutes so you can boil water, make soup or whatever you're making & not have to rush & wonder if they'll burn fast, NO they burn slow which is a huge plus!! No need to use so many, just use 1 to start then add 1 at a time. Excellent product, highly recommend to all & buy 2 or more so you'll have them when you need it!! 👍😁 ... show more
