Let me preface my review with the understanding that this little stove is not a viable cooking source. It is somewhat of a novelty compared to a functional tool, but it is pretty cool nonetheless. First off, the quality of materials is surprisingly high given that I bought this thinking it would be as sturdy as a soda can. The pieces are heavy gauge steel and fit together perfectly. Hats off on overall metal quality and fit. The carrying pouch wasnt a cheesy piece of fabric either. It is pretty heavy nylon with a velcro tab that keeps everything in place. I couldnt get this to burn twigs very well. It may be because it is winter here and things are a little moist or because the air flow was limited given the height of the holes in the stove. Whatever the reason, twigs were challenging. So I took an Esbit solid fuel tab and placed it in the stove and it functioned perfectly. After placing 1 cup of water on the stove, it took about 2.5 Esbit tabs to heat it up enough to make a hot drink and a little more to get the cup boiling. Next step is to test a tea candle as suggested in other reviews to see if i can do any better with that. This would be a great tool for a quick hike that you want a hot drink on to enjoy while taking a break. But I wouldnt want to try and cook a meal with it given its limited size. If you are looking for a larger stove, I might suggest a Vargo (probably my favorite wood burning stove) or an Emberlit (very similar design to this). Either way, its a fun little stove. Adding a follow up to this stove. Tea candles do work but take forever which frustrates me but it could work in a pinch. So I will stick with solid fuel tabs. Last fall I used this stove for a few hot drinks on the trail after two previous days of hiking with a heavy thermos. I don’t think I’ll ever carry a thermos again after realizing that this stove fit inside my titanium cup with a pill bottle full of fuel tabs, a Bic lighter, and some tea / sugar packets. I am currently working on an emergency kit for back-country survival for my daughter so I just ordered her one today. The more time I spend with these things, the more I like them! ... show more

    • Tiny but very effective
This stove is extremely small, but it works. I'd recommend a windscreen around it, but I carry it as a backup and have a screen anyway. It is very well-made and well thought out. It's light, but durable with a carabiner hole in each panel/piece that makes it a breeze to clip it together (just get a small keychain biner to do the job... those holes are small, too). EDIT (new paragraph): I've created a new use for it; I use a Mini Tattoo Stove, a tiny, carbon wick, alcohol stove with a remote feed line and fuel bottle. The stove stands about 1.5 inches high and has about the same diameter. It sits nicely on the platform of Pocket Stove and the hose feeds through the fire logo cut out on the open side. It's actually a perfect pot stand for the Mini Tattoo Stove and would work on other similar small stove burners made by cottage vendors. Additionally, with it being wood-friendly, it works in either capacity -- as a wood stove or as a stand for your ultralight remote feed alcohol stove. One reviewer noted it was "novelty" sized and I admit, it's really too small to bring a large 1 or 1.5 liter pot to a boil. I'd call it perfect for pots that hold up to 700 ml of water or cooking in a small, one-person skillet. The Stanley stainless steel camping pot is a good choice, as is a 700 ml titanium pot. Avoid short, wide pots, like the MSR Titan. It's the wrong shape for this stove. (end EDIT) As far as function, it does what it should. Small sticks and other flammable bits are loaded in, they burn and your pot cooks. The usual caveats about wood stoves apply here... it creates soot when using organic material and it can and will soot up your pans, but I got used to that years ago when I first started camping. You can find some good tips for mitigating this online. It also works with solid fuel tabs, too, so it could be a substitute for your primary stove if you use esbit/hexamine tablets. Packs perfectly flat and is very sturdy when placed on a flat, solid surface. Again, I reiterate that you will want some wind protection from the windward side at least (this could be a rock or something else, but I still recommend a windscreen). I am a bit of a stovaholic this is one of my favorite woodies. Bear in mind that if you cook for more than one, you might want to go with the larger size. I love it as a backup to my alcohol stove and am glad I purchased it. ... show more

    • 95% Alcohol & Esbit Boil!!!
This little stove is great for burning solid fuel tabs or alcohol. I have used it with esbit tabs and they work very well for boiling water. If you have no wind 1 tablet in this stove will boil 2 cups of water. I also took the candle out of a tea light and placed the empty cup in the bottom of the stove, filled it with 95% ethanol and took the trivet off and set the cup directly on top of the walls to better focus the flame at my steal cup with 2 cups of room temperature water, and I covered the cup with a silicon cover. The stove was able to completely boil the water and sustain a boil for about 1 minute before the tea light cup went empty. The stove also holds itself together quite well once the sides and bottom are intact, beware of the trivets as they like to jump out of position if you move your cooking vessel too much. While you could use this EDC Box for a wood fire, tending such a small fire and constantly stoking and feeding it would be quite a chore. I would suggest buying the next size bigger regular Bush Box for that as it is a more appropriate size for alternative fuels. If used with solid fuel tabs or Alcohol this can be a legitimate option for cooking and boiling water. ... show more
