This set of exercise dumbbells is great for doing intermediate exercise at the office, i.e., to reactivate circulation and force some extra activity in the body during long work hours, but they are definitely not designed to build muscle; they are very light. They are dedicated to aerobic exercise in workouts, which are used by women (who are not interested in developing muscle mass, they are more interested in defining shapes), to introduce a teenager (12-14 years) in the workout, or to exercise in old age (for a person who had this routine in youth); for an adult man, they are very light, with the drawback that only two discs can be put on each side of the bar, meaning that the maximum weight that can be carried by each dumbbell is eight pounds. On the good side, I can mention that they look well built; it seems like they will last a long time since they are not exposed to too much weight, and because the discs are plastic, they hardly scratch the floor or damage the carpet. This is a great set for a beginner, a senior, or someone who just wants to do some light weight training on a budget. One thing I didn't realize by looking at the product page is that everything is plastic, including the bars to which the weights attach. The concept of these reminds me of the plastic weights that some parents of my friends had back in the 60's, where you would buy them empty and then fill them with water or sand. I never used them, but I remember them. These are much nicer looking than those old school plastic weights though. It's an interesting system, and it would be great for an area that might occasionally have dampness, like a garage or basement because nothing is going to rust in this set like inexpensive iron plates will. A person could buy weight plates coated in urethane, or that use other methods to avoid rust but they are probably going to cost a lot. The dumbbell bars have a really nice textured rubber grip. It's a different feeling than metal would be but it was nice because I didn't have to wear gloves. The dumbbells work well as long as you are not changing the weights a lot. The time it takes to add/remove weights using the proprietary nuts is a bit of a drawback when you want to quickly move from one exercise to another and trying to keep your heart rate within a certain range. Perhaps in version 2.0 they will have a faster method of changing the weights. The amount of weight is not enough for me to use the barbell configuration without purchasing more weights. I don't really want to do that at this time, so I will continue to use my resistance bands for that. I do have some equipment that I can use with the weight plates (a tib bar, and a pulley system) and these will fit just fine on the 1" loading pins that both of those utilize. To sum up, this low cost system has a lot of good features and a few not so good, but there is a place for this set in a lot of home gyms, especially if they are in an area where there could be dampness at times. These came just as described. The look good, appear well made, and do the job I got them for. I got the 20 lb set thinking I could add weights later - there is only one set of pictures that don't change depending on your selection and the one showing this set specifically show a longer bar. unfortunately, the bar is just sized for two weights, so there is a loss in flexibility if I wish to add more - I could just increase the weight of each, but adding a third weight, like in the other sets, won't be an option. Not a big deal, but I might have gotten the larger set to start with if I knew this at the start. ... show more

    • Annoying system to adjust weights

I bought the 80 pounds. The screw at the end that makes it adjustable takes a lot of time to screw all the way down. Then when you want to adjust the weight you need to take the screw all the way out then all the way back in. However, weights seem well made and no sharp edges on the weights.
