This set of exercise dumbbells is great for doing intermediate exercise at the office, i.e., to reactivate circulation and force some extra activity in the body during long work hours, but they are definitely not designed to build muscle; they are very light. They are dedicated to aerobic exercise in workouts, which are used by women (who are not interested in developing muscle mass, they are more interested in defining shapes), to introduce a teenager (12-14 years) in the workout, or to exercise in old age (for a person who had this routine in youth); for an adult man, they are very light, with the drawback that only two discs can be put on each side of the bar, meaning that the maximum weight that can be carried by each dumbbell is eight pounds. On the good side, I can mention that they look well built; it seems like they will last a long time since they are not exposed to too much weight, and because the discs are plastic, they hardly scratch the floor or damage the carpet. These came just as described. The look good, appear well made, and do the job I got them for. I got the 20 lb set thinking I could add weights later - there is only one set of pictures that don't change depending on your selection and the one showing this set specifically show a longer bar. unfortunately, the bar is just sized for two weights, so there is a loss in flexibility if I wish to add more - I could just increase the weight of each, but adding a third weight, like in the other sets, won't be an option. Not a big deal, but I might have gotten the larger set to start with if I knew this at the start. ... show more

I wasn't impressed with the adjustable dumbbells set for a few reasons. First, when they say "20 pounds," they mean the entire set weighs 20 pounds, which wasn't clear in the product description on the website. It can be assembled to use as a barbell, but I found the rod to be a bit too short for comfort. On the plus side, it was easy to assemble, and the set does look good. However, the material feels slightly low density (too light compared to its volume), which raises some concerns about durability. I didn’t know what to expect out of a $50 set of dumbbells. Honestly, I’m impressed. Yes, they’re entirely plastic, but a heavy duty plastic. They’re easy enough to figure out and change configuration without any instructions whatsoever. I’m glad with this purchase. Definitely recommend.

The only thing I don't like is that I am unable to put two of the larger weight on one end so I can not do curls the way I'd like to. But everything else about this set is fantastic. They have a quality feel to them and I really like the grip. I got the smaller set so I mostly use these to help me get the blood flowing with my unique morning excercise routine.
