    • GOOD and BAD: Handle Fell Out, Paragon sent parts to FIX, back in business
BLUF: If you own or buy this safe, HIGHLY RECOMMEND taking off the back of the door (four screws), remove the screw/bolt holding the handle in place, ensure it has a lock washer, APPLY LOCTITE, and re-install. Ignoring this simple fix will cause you major headaches down the road and doing it will make the safe good for years to come. UPDATE #3: THE GOOD: Paragon came through as promised and sent the replacement part, a new bolt and missing lock washer. I installed all (with loctite on the bolt) and all is back to normal. The company was easy to deal with, expeditiously sent the parts, and I am back in business, so increase to 3-stars (can not go higher due to the following). THE BAD: Replaced my last Stack-On safe with a third (and final) Paragon 7803. Upon arrival I opened the back of the safe door inspected the mechanism and sure enough the handle screw was loose. Applied Loctite and tightened the screw. I have confidence in my fix, but not in their manufacture process. UPDATE #2: I contacted Paragon Customer Service by phone and sent a follow-up email on 16 May 2016. Paragon (aka Mindy) were very responsive, understood the problem and accepted responsibility without hesitiation! Another Paragon worker called back to verify which parts and is sending the necessary replacement parts free of charge today. She also verified they forwarded my recommendation to add Loctite to their assembly process to management. Therefore, I regraded from 1-star to 2-stars and will further elevate the grade upon receiving the parts and completing the fix. I can not speak to how well they would have received a warrenty request to send in the safe for repair (high shipping cost) or to replace it entirely (unecessary). But, these options were not needed in my case since I am capable of repairing the safe once provided the right parts (the simplest and quickest solution). I will post pictures of the problem if I can figure out how to post them to Amazon. UPDATE #1: This safe failed due to a design/manufacturing defect of a missing lock washer resulting in the handle that moves the locking bolts after the electronic key pad is unlocked to FALL OUT of the front of the safe. This is after less than two years of very light use (opening 1-2 times per month for a total of well less than 75 actuations). The handle has a built in threaded receptacle and the bolt that attached the handle to the rest of the lock mechanism backed out internally due to a missing lock washer. I heard the bolt fall inside the door. A YouTube video on how to drill out a similar safe when this occurs, helped me devise a procedure to open the inoperative safe. I compared the bad safe to a good one I own, and clearly identified the missing lock washer as the cause of the failure. I will contact Paragon and see how well they back there product. This could have been prevented with better QC or one drop of loctite during assembly. I regraded this safe from 4-stars to 1-star for this reason. ORIGINAL: The best inexpensive gun safe I have found. Tried three other Stack-On safes before and the Paragon is more secure (tri directional bolts, circular key lock, better hinges) and larger for a comparable price. I now own two Paragons and will replace my last Stack-On safe soon. It is a basic theft/child resistant safe, not for protection against water, fire, or the Hole-in-the-Wall gang. ... show more

    • Not bad for the price
I needed a pseudo-semi-quasi safe and this one was not a bad choice. Pretty large but not expensive. Electronic keypad is easy to set up, but be sure to read the other reviews reference the locking handle bolt -- be sure to secure it with Loc-Tite or similar. The door is somewhat loose-fitting, but some thin weatherstripping around the inside perimeter of the door will fix that. Lots of room inside, and a couple of shelves that you can use (or not). This is more of a glorified lock box than a safe, so don't store your diamonds and other jewellry in it, but it would take someone a while to break into it. Just bolt it down and it'll be pretty secure. Great choice at this price point. ... show more

    • BOUGHT TWO! SOME ISSUES BUT SATISFIED.
This is the best of the Paragon/Paraguard safes mainly because it utilizes three locking bolts instead of two and is the heaviest model they produce at this time. Some reviewers refer to it as more of a heavy duty lock box than a safe but in this price range it represents a good value. It is true that the key pad beeps cannot be disabled on all of these units although the instructions state that it can be disabled. I bought two of them and as it turns out I could disable one and not the other. Yes, the door is heavier gauge steel than the sides and back. When open the safe will tilt forward unless you bolt down the safe. Conceled hinges add to the security but as a result the door only opens 90 degrees. This and many other imported electronic lock safes are most vulnerable to break in when the rear of the safe is accessible. Definitely bolt it to a wall or to the floor up against a wall. There are holes in the bottom for bolting it down and the hardware is included. I also recommend removing the rear door panel and checking the nuts on the locking bolt linkage to make sure they are snug. On one of mine the linkage fell apart during shipping so I had to put it back together. Both came with Barrel type keys. It is not fire rated. I also lined the door slam with foam weather stripping. This removed the play in the door when closed. I bolted it down in a closet where there is little room to access the sides or back. This also makes it easy to keep it covered with clothes etc so it is out of sight. Many people put magnetic LED lights inside but I decided not to. I prefer to just use a small flashlight. Reason being is I do not want any perpetrator to see the spiked rat trap on the back of the top shelf which cannot be seen in the dark. This way the neihbors will hear him scream and the Cops can check the local hospitals for hand injury victims! I also keep a small dummy safe locked with junk in it where it can be more easily found and carried off. I'm debating whether or not to leave them a present in there too! The bottom line is that for protecting valuables from kids, curious baby sitters, and from the ever growing population of smash and grab punks this should do the job especially if it is bolted down. No it will not stop a professional criminal or someone with enough time and tools but for around $150 it is a good buy. ... show more
