Our 8 yr old daughter loves bugs, and rocks, and a general curiosity for seeing small things up close. She originally wanted a lab scope to see germs, but we knew that would involve a bit of work and parental involvement to use. This really is a completely different tool than a microscope though and neither can do what the other does. This is probably more useful and enjoyable for kids. While this is a magnifier and not a microscope this is perfect and super easy to use. She can take a bug, plant, rock, or whatever and see about as close up as you'd want to. And even snap a picture. Only complaint would be the lighting. A dimmable or different temperature would be good. Sometimes it's a little too bright and white light.     • Decent, but don't expect amazing picture quality

Overall the product is decent for the price. But after using it for a while (for soldering) the picture quality has become frustrating enough that I'm looking at other options. I don't use many of the features on it, just simply turn it on (I keep it plugged into external power via usb) and solder away. And assuming your board doesn't have details that are too small, it works okay for that. But if you look at the picture you can see what I'm talking about on the quality. Granted those solder balls in the middle are pretty small - about 0.4mm pitch. But the image is too grainy and I can't really see what I'm doing on something like this. Another thing is while it has 4 levels of zoom, they do not appear to actually change anything related to the lens, but instead only take the same exact image and make it bigger on the screen (i.e. you can see the same blurry, fuzzy image bigger - it doesn't magnify with the lens any differently). Some good things about it are: - refresh rate is very fast, almost no visible lag at all on the screen (not sure about using an external display, haven't tried it) - it goes up high enough that I can easily work and do soldering under it - light gets pretty bright, no problems with it being too dark (I have to turn it down a bit actually, knob on the side) - zoom is somewhat decent (but again, only if you can suffer the quality) If you want something inexpensive and easy to use, it's a decent product. But if you don't want to run into problems like those shown in the image, go with something else (and probably pay fair bit more). ... show more

    • Useful but not for micro soldering
It helped with the project I was working on. Image not as crisp as I was expecting. I will use it for removing splinters from my hand. And examining coins. The 5 yo will enjoy it but not sure if it can take his abuse! The directions specifically say it can not be used on a PC. I was able to use it with my PC with 90% success. PC could not recognize the camera a few times. I was able to make a video and take a pic with the PC. I am not completely disappointed. Added 7/17: I am not able to use it unless it is plugged into a power source. I have tried changing the sleep mode and the battery has enough power. It will turn off in less than 3 minutes unless I have it plugged into household current. ... show more

Pros: - Light Weight - Fun for kids and adults - Good quality picture - Excellent customer service Cons: - It uses a rechargeable battery and the battery is irreplacable (If the battery reached end of life, it would be the end of the unit) - No manual to explain how to use the software or navigate the menu (you will have to guess the symbols on the screen) - I wish there were more flexibility in moving the lens (but for the price, you cannot really complain about that) I could not get the item I received work but probably the unit I received was defective. ... show more

This is an inexpensive monocular microscope with one lens and an adjustable focal length. If you want high magnification, you place the lens close to the object and adjust the focus. If you want less magnification, you move the lens back from the object and re-focus. Simple, and the picture quality is very good. This microscope is so poorly designed and built that you can't even fit the USB cable that comes with it into the back of the unit, you've gotta purchase one with a smaller micro-USB end. The magnification is entirely digital - in other words, there is no lense. Zooming in on this thing is like throwing an image in MSPaint and clicking "resize".     • Questionable circuit design, and lack of engineering for the focus.
When adjusting the focus the camera moves left and right, the hardware has some design issues, when connecting or disconnecting an un powered usb cable the device powers on, same behavior occurs on low low battery conditions, and if the device is bumped it will randomly power up. Captured images do not reflect what you see o. The screen, the images are darker as if illuminated with a low wattage incandescent lamp. ... show more

Must better than the hand held types, and the 7" screens beats using your phone as a monitor like the cheaper portable microscopes. The adjustability of focus allows anyone to use it.
