  • Good lenses - iffy power switch on LED light
I know this is a toy, but I bought it as a cheap portable stereo microscope for soldering. It has glass lenses and good image quality. 20X is perfect for soldering SMT parts. Totally worth it and very portable. Here are the cons: 1. The power switch on the LED light flickers. I was able to turn it on and off a bunch and now mine is OK. They probably got some solder flux inside the switch or something. You can remove the switch from the battery compartment if you need to replace it. 2. The viewing area is smaller; It's not full field like $400 microscope with larger lenses. 3. The focus up/down adjustment uses a friction roller, not gears. This might wear out, or might not move unless you push the lenses away from you toward the "post" . 4. The 20x objective lenses fall out if you turn it upside down. I taped them to keep them attached. 5. There isn't a diopter adjustment if one of your eyes has different focus than the other. ... show more

  • Light is very faulty
I cant write a good review. The light flickers and is very dim. If I move the microscope, it goes out and I have to fiddle with the wire to try to get it to come back on. Returning..

This microscope is easy for young scientists to use and the image quality is very sharp. Unfortunately, our light won't turn off so we have to take the batteries out every time we finish using it; accessing the battery requires a screwdriver, so it's not very convenient.

  • These are way better than mere toys
Lenses are glass, not plastic. Image quality is very sharp and color free over most of the field of view, showing a tinge of color at full field, due to the simple 2-element Ramsden-type eyepieces. These are way better than mere toys, and would be useful to anyone, including adults, wanting a 20X stereo microscope. ... show more
