Size: 6.5"
This vice is the one to buy. We farm and do a lot of fabrication in the shop. I spent a lot of time looking for the perfect vice for Mikes shop. This vice is the very best one, Stop here with your search.

  • QC could use improvement, but still a great value
Size: 5.5"
As a serial vise abuser, I have destroyed probably a half dozen cheap vises from Harbor Freight and various other Chinese manufacturers. I'm mercilessly abuse my vices, using them as makeshift shop presses, sheet metal brakes, anvils, and just generally to hold parts while I beat on the parts full swing with a sledgehammer. I stepped up from the four and five inch Chinese vices to this reversible vise, and I've been very happy with my purchase. More times than I care to remember, a normal vise simply won't open wide enough to hold some of my bigger work pieces. So far, that is not been an issue with this vise! In fact, the throat opening is so big on this one that I haven't even had to reverse it yet! Overall, the finish is very nice and the vise seems very well made. It feels very sturdy, and the swivel plate seems to be splined which helps keep the vise from unwanted rotation when it is locked down. As far as compliance go, they are fairly minor. The same splining in the rotating turret that holds It rock steady when clamped down also makes it so you have to loosen it significantly before you're able to rotate the vise. This isn't a big deal, but when you're making a lot of small adjustments, it ends up being a lot of extra movement of the set screws. Generally speaking, the set screws on both sides need to be loosened three half-turns before the vise will consistently rotate. It's a minor inconvenience, but it's a fair trade-off for the ability to lock it in and keep it from unwanted rotation. My next minor complaint is in regards to the anvil surfaces of the vise. This is nice and that it has two anvil surfaces, one in the back where most vices have one, but also a secondary anvil on the top of the stationary jaw. Because of the above mentioned splining making rotation of the vise a little slower, this causes one to use the secondary anvil on the top as more of the primary anvil. Additionally, if you do rotate the vise to use the primary back anvil, be advised that the reversible jaw design makes it so one of the replaceable serrated jaw inserts is right above part of this anvil. As a result, you have a bit of an obstructed swing with a hammer when using this anvil service, so I tend to simply not use it at all and use the top anvil almost exclusively. Again, not a deal breaker, but something to be aware of. The last issue I have is really the most significant, and it is the most easily corrected issue. Since this vise is made in china, which is how they're able to bring it to you at such an affordable price, it is plagued by the number one issue with Chinese made goods: inconsistent quality control. In my case, this bad QC reared it's ugly head in the form of one of the primary Jaws being machined crooked where the serrated jaw insert attaches. Again, not a deal breaker, but it just sucks to get advice and bolt it down, only to realize after using it (and thus making it non-returnable) that one of the jaws is machined crooked by about 10°, and the serrated jaw inserts don't line up because of it. This gets to be a little bit more than annoying if you're like me and use the jaws of the vise as a makeshift sheet metal break- it makes it difficult to get a clean band when the Jaws don't line up like this. All In all, a great value for the money, extremely sturdy, incredibly versatile, and advice that I would recommend. Just go over it with a fine-tooth comb when you unbox it, and keep an eye out for any QC issues that may have slipped past. ... show more

  • Great bang for the buck
Size: 5.5"
I've been a Wilton guy for over 50 years and have three vises that date back to the Schiller Park era including a 4S bullet from the late 50s. HOWEVER, this Yost vise fit the criteria wonderfully that I had set for the purchase. It fit perfectly in the desired location with a hole pattern and footprint within the mounting constraints. It is made from ductile iron instead of the more brittle cast iron. It is 65,000 PSI ductile iron throughout vs. others that are part 60,000 and part 30,000 or all 30,000. Removable pipe jaws. Great fit and finish. A customer service department where I could talk to an owner whose name is the same as on the vise. This was an easy decision! Besides, I'd do almost anything to not have to deal with customer service at JPW. As a follow up to my initial review, I've purchased an accessory directly from Yost and the shipment was lost by USPS. Yost customer service helped track the shipment and when that was unsuccessful they shipped a duplicate order out without question using a different carrier. GREAT JOB YOST! After using the vise now for a few months I became curious how the removable/replaceable pipe jaws come out. They are simply held in place with engineered spring clips behind the jaw which do not hinder operations in any way. This is a far better solution than those reversible vises with permanent cast pipe jaws. ... show more

  • Quality vise
Size: 5.5"
The vise is very good for the price. It’s been bolted on my welding bench for over a year now and it has held up great. I also have a comparable Wilton vise (same price point, made in china, etc.) in the same shop. Both vises easily get the job done, and will last for years, but I prefer the yost because ductile iron is superior the cast iron. Also, the yost has slightly tighter tolerances(very little wobble even fully extended) and is smoother to operate one handed. Only downside is that it is made in China, however if it was USA made, I would believe it because of the quality. I would purchase this over Wilton if I were to buy a sub 400 dollar vise. ... show more

  • YOST better than WILTON ? In this case BIG YES.
Size: 5.5"
I first ordered the Wilton model 11106 6" bench vise. It arrived in a semi flimsy box with no other protection. The box was mangled and re-taped. No problem a vise isn't gonna break in shipment right? NOT - yes it was broken. A cracked foot and a bent main handle. UPS manhandled that one but good. I immediately filed for a return and replacement. Couple hours later I thought "how good could this vise be if the handle bent 20 degrees in a drop during shipment. I cancelled the return and went back to research and shopping. I found the YOST Mechanics Vise 855-D2. A 5.5" vise rather than 6" but with many more features and MOST IMPORTANTLY 60,000 PSI Ductile Iron construction, rather than the 30,000 PSI Wilton which they claim on Amazon is steel, but says "cast iron" for the 11106 on the Wilton website!! Which is it Wilton? Doesn't matter, cause for a few bucks more you can get a real 60,000 PSI YOST reversible. Let me tell you I can already tell from its fit and finish this is a serious vise that will problem long outlast the $125 Wilton for banging and high pressure squeezes. Having seen them both there is no comparison. I seldom consider a 5 star review, but here comes one now. I am a happy camper. ... show more
