  • This is a heavy built vise
Much more substantial than I expected. This is a good carpenter's vise, excellent for the price. I am very pleased

  • Good Budget Vise
The vise is good for the price. It will work well for my needs doing home projects and just having fun making stuff with wood in the garage. It will be mounted to a homade 2'x4' work table using bolts. The smooth surfaced slide rods can be screwed out for vise disassembly. The only strike I will give this vise is due to the partly inaccurate measurements stated in the descriptions. The jaws open to only 6" not 7.5" from front inside jaw surface to rear inside jaw surface. The jaw width is 6" not 6.5". (See photos). But this vise still has a wider jaw grip than some of the other brands. I rate this vise at 4 stars mostly because of the misleading or at least the inaccurate measurements portrayed. In A nutshell, it's a great vise for someone trying to be frugal with their money like me. ... show more

  • Don't think you can beat it for the price.
With all the comments saying that there was no dog I was a bit skeptical but for $16.48 even with no dog I'd consider it a great deal. When mine arrived it DID in fact have the dog and it was apparently a newer model (even though it still had the same 38-736 model number) as the box stated 6 1/2" instead of 6" and it measured out at 6 1/2" (the product details do say 6 1/2"). It took some cleaning to remove the oil on the rods. Even after removing the oil it still operated smoothly. If I ever have any issues I'd simply apply some stick wax instead of oil. The dog was a bit rusty and I'm not sure it will be useful anyway unless your bench thickness is only about 2 1/4" which is the measurement from the base mounting surface to the top of the vise. While they say it mounts to the face of your bench and there are 2 countersunk holes on the back face for this there are also 4 countersunk holes on the base mounting surface for attaching from below. As mentioned those mounting holes are not large (a 3/16" drill bit fits easily in them and has some wiggle room). The front face on mine had 2 threaded holes for attaching a jaw pad while the rear face had 2 non-threaded holes for this purpose. The metal handle for operating the vise has a nice feature of a thick rubber O-ring at each end that can be moved to keep the handle positioned wherever you want it. ... show more

  • I received this vice today and it does have the ...
I received this vice today and it does have the metal dog as described. I will update the review after I get it installed an use it. Update: I have installed the vice and it works ok. I didn't expect it to be the greatest thing ever for the price. It does clamp well as long as you use the center of the vice. Clamping to one side to cut dovetails, the vice flexes very easily and does not stay even across the jaw. I am a hobby woodworker, and I think it will be fine for me, but probably not for a serious/professional. Another Update: I think I have had this vice for a month or so. I only use it as a hobby (maybe 8-10 hours since installed.) Here is what has happened so far. The guide rods have came loose, and cause the vice jaws not to close completely. Have tightened them twice now. vice flexes super easy, as I stated before. Unless you are holding something directly in the middle of the jaw, you can't tighten it enough to hold for fear of breaking or bending something... The handle knob came off and parts scattered. The handle hit the wing nut for the vice dog, and broke half of the wing nut off. I am thinking you might add another 20-30 bucks and get a different vice. I thought it would be fine for what I did, but really hasn't been that good for just a month of light use. If you do buy it, get the vice grips out when you get it and tighten the guide rods and handle knobs right off. I can't say that I am terribly disappointed for what it costs, but one of those things where you will be better off to pay a little more. ... show more

  • Nice Vise
This vice is a very nice suprise.... I bought it to add to a new workbench in my shop that I repurposed from and old oak desk. I figured I would get a cheap vise that Might work... NOPE this vice is a great addition...It is the only one offered here that has the bench dog lug at a low price... thats the main reason I chose it in the first place. I added 2 (hickory) clamp pads made from left over tounge and groove flooring and this vise is ready to go. I read a few reviews for some other offerings and I will say. If you like a cheap alternative this is the way to go. This vise has a good sturdy feel and is smooth operating. I especially like that is has rubber noise stops on the handle ends (a plus). Im not to fond of the "hammered finish" but it is of little concern at this price range.... All in All I would recommend this vise to anyone looking to add one and dosent want to pay out the wazoo for one that will do the same thing... I WILL be buying another one for the other side of my new bench also!!! ... show more
