Top Amazon Reviews

  • 5 Stars, but read my review. My assembly/installation notes.
I chose this awning because it looked stronger and more durable than the similar less expensive awnings. I believe the gutter adds to this awning's firmness (my installed awning's the outside corners are solid). Its aluminum alloy frame is as strong and light as I hoped. Regarding its polycarbonate board; I would call it plexiglass, is good. I was able to resolve my issues (below), so I rated this awning base on its "after installation" quality (mentioned above). I'm happy with my awning, so I recommend it. The rest of my review is based on my (successful) experience. There may be better (more correct) approaches. My (below) descriptions may seem tedious, but I believe a different brand (of this awning type) would be generally the same. - - - - Regarding its assembly: I purchased the 80" (width) by 40" (depth) version (two combined 40" sections). Its two plexiglass sheets are (approximately) 38" by 39" (not perfectly square). I interpret, the instructions state the 48" plexiglass represents the depth (my house's wall towards the awning's gutter). BUT instead, I ended up using the plexiglass' 39" as depth. In other words: The two 38" plexiglass panel widths are part of the total 80" width. I used a large rubber hammer to get the gutters to tightly fit into their braces (before screwing them together). I had to caulk (outdoor leakproof type) both gutter joints (where the two major sections join in the center). Above: I believe I'd need to do this regardless if this was a different brand of awning (with a gutter). Also included are six gold wood screws (I did not use) and six silver screws with metal piercing tips (I did use). The above mentioned silver screws keep three of the four "depth" edges in place. The fourth "depth" edge is kept together by joining the two major awning sections together. Above: So, there are no screws (yet) holding the two major awning sections together (just a fitted slot). Above: I believed this was going to be a problem when moving the awning during installation. Above: So I drilled one hole at each end of the center support bracket, also piercing through two corners of the plexiglass. Then, I put a bolt through each hole. Now, the fully assembled awning (two joined sections) cannot pull apart. UPDATE: I discovered the silver metal piercing screws are for joining the two sections. Above: I saw two screw holes near one of my drilled screw holes. - - - - Regarding its installation: I purchased the 80" (width) by 40" (depth) version (two combined 40" sections). Its six expandable sleeves and bolts may be tricky to work with. If you're not introspective while installing them inside your wall, you may lose it's nut inside your wall. Or, both its bolt and nut will spin (together) and never tighten. Before hammering into your wall's hole (that you drilled), make sure the nut is lightly touching its sleeve. After you hammer the sleeve, nut and bolt into you wall, do NOT remove the bolt or the nut will fall inside your wall. Instead, tighten the bolt which causes the nut to widen (expand) its sleeve and brings the nut closer toward its bolt head. I had my nut screwed in about 2"+ into its sleeve, before I (then) removed the bolt (for the next installation step). Then: I could not get my first top/center bolt close enough to reach its nut threads because the awning outside edges were hitting the side of my house wall and the awning center was concave. I purchased a longer very large screw (with a hex head type) and placed it inside the awning's bottom/center hole. See my attached image & information about my separately purchased giant screw. This giant screw enabled me to force the awning's back center to be tight against my house's wall and hold the awning in place while I marked the placement for the other five holes. Then, I took down the awning, drilled the other five holes, installed their bolts and sleeves. The giant screw (forcing the awning to be tightly flush to the side of my wall) enabled to awning's native bolts to be able to reach their nut threads. Side-note: If you decide to instead use six of your own "giant" screws, the awning's (three) upper mounting holes require one size less girth than the giant screw I described. Above: The awning's (three) lower mounting holes can use the giant screw (girth: 1/2) I described. - - - - Regarding my attached pictures: You may notice, I plugged one side of its gutter and have the other gutter side at a slightly downward angle. The white rubber caulk I use will turn transparent with one week of drying. - - - - UPDATE: I saw a video where the first (depth) bracket is (alone) installed into the wall. Then the first assembled section is installed into that mounted bracket. Then the second assembled section is installed into that mounted center bracket. Then add silver metal piercing screws into the center (depth) bracket to reinforce the two joined sections. Above: I put the fully assembled awning up, which was was more difficult (my mistake). ... show more
