    • Great product.. other reviewers missed some critical details
I've had this beam for about a week now and we love it! Its much better than using a VR headset by far.... There are some critical details that other people missed... specifically the ability to install any android app to the device and how it wont charge while using it. Others mentioned that it only ships with netflix, prime, vlc and a file explorer app... and they'd be correct. However there is a super simple method used to install any apk file to this device that doesn't require anything other than the device itself. There's a youtube video from a few months back from Osama Alborbar that covers it. I do have some questions about charging, but my beam appears to charge while using it when plugged into devices like my steam deck. I believe the other reviewer is wrong about what he said entirely... xreal sells an adapter where you can charge and use video through usb-c at the same time. Either they had a terrible support agent or they simply made up this claim. I'm thinking its the latter. I was able to use and stream large 4k rips from my plex server directly to the beam. I was also able to install a comic book / manga reader and have it download new volumes directly to the headset. You can also plug the beam directly into your pc and drag files to it. It has about 20gb of storage available. CONS: The device can make a whining noise and get hot at times.. it makes me slightly concerned about its lifespan. I wouldn't drop it into a sealed pocket or backpack. Its a shame that the ability to resize and distance of the screen isn't built into the glasses.. that you need this $120 device to do it. HOWEVER, since I got these on sale during prime day for a total of $300 for the xreal airs and the beam.. its difficult to complain as the value is insane. ... show more

    • Stingy manufacturer. Still if you have Xreal Air glasses you need this. Maybe worth $20
First off no company who sells an incomplete product that requires another incomplete product to use the first incomplete product deserves more than 1 star. You have to have this in order to get full use of your Xreal Air glasses, which is annoying. Also there is no way to charge this device while using it. The company claims this is because of usb c "limitations" hoping that customers aren't smart enough to realize usb c is bidirectional, so ALL usb c products are capable of charging while being used, just Xreal is trying to milk as much money out of customers as they can. No updates provided by manufacturer, just the claim "More apps soon". The device currently provides no apps whatsoever. Only capable of keeping a charge for 45 minutes to an hour of use tops. Also DOES NOT allow you to use with the Nebula app, nor does it provide any functionality of the Nebula app and restricts you to a single monitor. The screen is twitchy and full of artifacts. You have to keep your head perfectly still to use. There is no way to use this while walking. If I wrote everything that is wrong with this device and Xreal products in general I would have to write a novel. If you already made the unfortunate mistake of purchasing Xreal glasses then you will probably need to buy this as well but if you haven't, I would recommend avoiding their products at all cost.     • Do not buy this YET if you want it for the wireless casting
The hardware is really cool, but there is very little that it can do in its current state, and it is not yet worth the extra $100. What it IS good for- 1. Simulated large screen for handheld consoles (Switch, ROG ally, Steam Deck). 2. Changing the size and location of the screen in your field of view. There are 3 modes - Body anchor (screen remains in a static postion regardless of where you look), Smooth follow- (the screen follows where you look), and Sideview- (the screen is shrunk and pinned to one of the 4 corners of your vision, good for multitasking) All 3 of these modes are shockingly well implemented, and are usefull in their own ways. The UI is smooth and easy to use, and looks great. What it is NOT good for (Yet)- Don't get this if you are looking for the wireless features. Wireless casting does NOT support Google cast. THIS MEANS YOU CANNOT STREAM FROM APPS THAT RELY ON GOOGLE CAST, LIKE YOUTUBE FOR EXAMPLE. While it does support other casting formats, like miracast, this severely limits its usefulness, as most mainstream services use google cast. There are apps you can use to stream content from the web, if you absolutely must watch Youtube videos wirelessly (I use web video caster on Google play), however, it tends to be clunky, and inconsistent, and it's significantly worse than just using the glasses directly wired to your phone. While you can use Samsung Dex wirelessly with the glasses, it is EXTREMELY laggy, and not suitable for viewing content. I personally just use the Beam in wired mode, to get the benefit of the resizable screen, and viewing modes, however, that on its own is not worth an extra $100. Takeaway- This device has great potential, but DONT get it just yet. The main menu indicates that new apps are in development for it. It is unclear what that entails, however, the implication is that this device is not in its final form. If Google cast support is added, this product would be an instant 5 stars for me. Unfortunately I can only speculate what will be added in the future, but for now, I would advise holding off on getting the Beam until new updates are added. TLDR- The UI and screen features are great The wireless casting features are essentially useless for most cases Don't buy it now, wait until new updates come out that add new features ... show more
