  • Vornado TRANSOM Window Fan
Color: Black Style: Remote Control Pattern Name: Fan
The media could not be loaded. This is by far the BEST window fan on the market, in my opinion. I absolutely LOVE the "privacy" that it provides while cooling the room. It's also VERY quiet, which is another plus. My Husband and I really ENJOY "fresh air" as opposed to artificial air [CENTRAL AIR] whenever the weather permits. This is actually the SECOND Vornado that we've purchased. We purchased our FIRST one several years ago now and it's STILL working wonderfully. The design is sleek and modern and doesn't require the window to be raised A LOT at all. Be sure to check the dimensions of your windows BEFORE purchasing. The Vornado has an exhaust mode as well. It's pretty cool how the fan reverses itself toward the outside to exhaust. It comes with a tiny remote to control ALL of its settings. It can also be controlled directly from the control panel on the fan. [NOTE: The COOLER it is outside, the BETTER the results] I would HIGHLY recommend this Vornado TRANSOM Window Fan if you're in the market for a window fan. Some may think it's a little on the PRICY side [I definitely thought so myself]. However, after owning and using it, I feel that it's worth it for the privacy that it provides as well as it's cooling ability and other features. We actually caught our SECOND Vornado on sale for a $30 savings...Thanks, Amazon!! ... show more

  • Super
Color: White Style: Remote Control Pattern Name: Fan
First the low profile is great vs most window fans. I luv that you can open window and still have this installed. I luv that it does seal light and air out when window is lowered. We use in bedroom and like it cold for sleep. We set this on 1 or 2 to bring in cool outside air along with ceiling fan to circulate air at night and works great. It’s a fan so is it silent, no but on two lower settings it’s super quiet and moves a lot of air. On side note I tried the Vornado portal unit before this and this one is welllllll worth the few extra dollars. IMO. Update: after couple weeks with this installed we realllllly like this fan. I’ve used it in both directions to bring air in and draw humid air out. It’s def a few bucks more but well worth the money for so many reasons. ... show more

  • Relatively Quiet, Good Looking, but Flawed
Color: Black Style: Remote Control Pattern Name: Fan
The mechanics of the fan itself seem well made and effective. It moves a good volume of air while maintaining a low visual profile. And it's weather resistant. Those are the main factors in its favor. Unfortunately other factors drag it down, particularly when considering its relatively high price. 1) The touch pad is annoyingly insensitive. I have to use a straight finger and poke the buttons hard for the fan to accept my commands. Thank goodness for the remote. 2) Why on earth did Vornado design the foam blocks with indents in them that let air through? This is inefficient and, frankly, incomprehensible. 3) Unless your window sash is entirely true, it is unlikely to keep the foam blocks in their place. Since they weigh nothing, when they are loose the slightest touch, or even just wind, can knock them out of your window. I had to tape mine in. 4) As with all window fans, this fan is open on both sides and cannot be sealed. I can't blame Vornado for that. But I can blame them for the fact that, when in blowing out mode, the center of the fan blows air IN. The inner one-eighth of the fan works directly against the rest of the fan. Again inefficient and inexplicable. All this is tolerable and I'm keeping mine, but I think this product needed more user testing before hitting the market. I'm not sure why the Wirecutter gives this fan such glowing praise and call it the best. Perhaps because other options are not great, either. I have several Bionaire window fans (also recommended by the Wirecutter) and they are flawed in their own ways. Perhaps the perfect fan is just around the corner. ... show more

  • A window fan that is ACTUALLY quiet!
Color: Black Style: Remote Control Pattern Name: Fan
My number one priority, in purchasing a window fan, was to get something QUIET. I had spent more money than I would have liked purchasing the traditional two fan window units that are so common today. Based on the promise and supporting reviews that they were very quiet fans, I purchased both a popular Bionaire and a Holmes fan. They were ok, but not nearly good enough. I wanted a fan as quiet as my ceiling fan on low and those two weren’t even in the ballpark. So through more searching, I eventually landed on the Vornado Transom. It’s not a traditional fan by any stretch of the imagination, but a few people said it was extremely quiet. Desperate to find something quieter than the others, I placed my bet. This fan is ACTUALLY quiet! On it’s lowest setting, it is a whisper compared to the other two. No, it’s not ceiling fan quiet, but I would compare it to the sound I’d hear coming through the vent when my central air is running. That’s pretty quiet! On high, yes the fan is much more noisy, but it moves a lot more air when on high. To be clear, low speed moves plenty of air, and high speed is not more noisy than the other models on high. Another difference between the Vornado and the other models, is the the fan speeds are SIGNIFICANTLY different. The difference between low and high on the other models is marginal at best. With the Vornado, low is ACTUALLY low… and high is ACTUALLY high. So you can choose between a quiet fan that gives you a nice breeze, or a noisy fan that moves air with quite a bit of force. Again, this unit on high was about as noisy as the other fans on high. On low, there is no contest. Do you get what I’m saying yet? THIS FAN IS VERY QUIET… MUCH quieter than any other window fan I’ve tried. So that’s the big sell for me. Other good features: The temperature selection works well. I set it up for 70 degrees, and it effectively turned on and off as necessary to bring in the cooler outside air. Since I keep the fan on low, I barely noticed when it turned on and off at all. This fan also gives you great privacy because you can’t see through it whether it’s on or off. A couple of not so great things about it... First, the foam blocks are not great. I needed an additional block that was 1/4 inch wide… I either had to try and squish a 1 inch block in that space (nope) or use something else to seal it. Vornado should rethink this strategy or include 1/2 and 1/4 inch blocks too. Considering the high quality construction of the unit, and the steeper price tag, Vornado should come up with something more eloquent. Secondly, the remote isn’t wonderful. You have to aim it DIRECTLY at the unit while you are DIRECTLY in front of it. And the range of the remote seems to be a pitiful 15 feet or so. I don’t know if that’s typical of this unit, but it’s definitely not great. Despite those two shortcomings, I still give the unit 5 stars based on its EXTREMELY LOW noise level given the decent amount of air it moves. If I ever need an additional window fan, this is the one I’ll get. ... show more
