  • Watch out when you open the box!
Color: 3 - Top
The only reason I did not give this 5 stars is because his was SUPPOSED to be a NEW unit. The LCD screen was scratched when I took the safe out of the box. When I opened the box, 3 sets of AA batteries fell to the floor. They were wrapped in the factory cellophane, but were not kept together by additional packaging. The allen wrench, a pretty important tool, was also just loose in the box. The instructions were pretty sad to tell you where and how to get to the lights so you can put in the set of AA's for it. There was no additional shipping protection for the safe except for a fairly flimsy styrofoam cover for the LCD/Touchpad. They did however put a "FRAGILE' sticker on the box. Now we go to the nitty gritty about the item. It looked good until I took the styrofoam off the LCD screen. I am still not convinced that this is not a used safe. Everything else looked ok, so I went on to trying to do the programming. The book clearly tells you that the key hole is behind the ID plate. Well, it took me a while to find it, because who needs instructions anyway, right? So, read the instructions. I am glad that the allen Wrench did not fall out during shipping, made it a little easier to remove the ID plate. So, after I read the instructions, I removed the ID plate, and the key worked great. This is where I found out how to get to the batteries. The 4 for the touch pad were pretty easy to find. Like I said earlier, the finding the place to put the LED batteries was like an Easter Egg Hunt...EVEN WITH THE INSTRUCTIONS! Alas, I found it and all the batteries are in. Now we go to the programming. I decided it was a good idea to read the instructions. This was actually the easiest part to do. I programmed 4 prints, 2 for my wife and 2 for me. Everything worked fine, so I erased them, and programmed them 3 additional times. Everything work exactly as I thought it should each of the 4 times. Now we go to programming in the touch pad. I thought since the LCD pad seems easy to scratch, I better program in a touch pad pin in case the finger print pad gets scratched. As you can tell, I am not the sharpest knife in the drawer. It took a while to get this thing to accept the pin. Quite honestly, the pin worked fine. It was all a series of operator errors. The LCD even said err! Well, I finally got the touch pad programmed. The safe is on a shelf in my closet. I have not bolted it in anywhere yet because it is too tall on the shelf to pull things out of it, so it needs to be mounted a little lower. But if someone was to come in and try and steal it, I think the weight of it and the contents may be a bit of a surprise to them. It weighs about 20 pounds empty. Put some things in it and it weighs nice. Not handled properly, like dropping it, it could break a foot or an ankle. Knowing what I know now, I would buy this again. I would hope that after this review however that they seller will package it better for shipping, and examine the keypad a little closer. If I had ONE complaint, in addition to the scratched keypad and poor packaging, I would have shipped it back. It just looked like used merchandise, and I don't like paying full price for used merchandise. ... show more

  • Solid performance for the price you pay, but with a few hiccups along the way.
Color: 1 - Standard
Pros: Price--I paid $160 for this safe including shipping. This is a very competitive price. Stack-on might be a little cheaper, but has a reputation for poor quality and poor reliability with their biometric readers. Gunvault and Barska are both typically more expensive for a similar size. So Viking wins here. Seamless welding--more durable, more secure, and looks better. What's not to like? Fingerprint reader--I scanned my index finger in 5 different positions/angles and then tested the safe's ability to read. It opened with my index fingerprint every time, but didn't open when I tried a non-registered fingerprint. Better reliability than many competing products. LED lighting inside (batteries included)--it's a nice touch and makes it easy to see what you've got stored. Ease of use--it's easy to register fingerprints, to turn sounds on or off, change batteries, etc. The user manual is actually surprisingly straightforward and understandable. I expected some horrible direct Chinese-to-English translation in the manual but it was actually fairly decent English. Fully-carpeted interior--don't want to scratch the finish on your guns? This has you covered, no need to buy a liner mat. Cons: Finish--the non-scratch finish was chipped off in two locations when my safe arrived. Possibly due to shipping damage, but more likely due to poor application. One area lost about a square inch of finish material on the upper left corner, the other area was near one of the pre-drilled bolt holes in the floor of the safe--it looked like they applied the finish and then drilled the holds, and the finish had chipped during the drilling. I don't really care if the steel is exposed since I care more about function than appearance for my gun safe, but this may be an issue for some folks. My biggest complaint, however, was lack of product testing. When my safe arrived I installed the batteries, registered my fingerprint, closed and locked the safe with the key, and then opened it with my fingerprint. Everything went smoothly. Then I tried to re-lock the safe. And nothing. The safe made a little whirring noise briefly, but did not lock. I tried again. Nothing. I referred back to the instructions, yes I was doing it right. I locked the safe with the key, then re-opened it with my fingerprint. No issues. But once again it wouldn't lock on its own. I repeated these steps with minor variations several times, but each and every time the safe failed to lock with its motor, and the only way I could get it to lock was manually with the key. Being mechanically minded I opened up the locking mechanism and started fiddling. After a few minutes I was able to identify the problem--a small piece of the locking mechanism was snagging on one of the mounting bolts in the door. This required me to disassemble the locking mechanism, bend some steel with pliers, and then carefully dremmel-smooth some edges. Once I did that and re-assembled the locking mechanism everything went smoothly. Now my safe functions perfectly. Opens and closes appropriately with key, PIN pad, or fingerprint. But it was a hassle getting there. I'm assuming that most people will use this safe to store guns. If you own a gun, I'm assuming you know how to break it down and clean it. And if you can break down and clean a gun, you can break down and fix this safe no problem. The fix was not difficult or complicated. But the fact that I had to do it in the first place costs them one star in the review. ... show more

  • Very good safe for the money, right size for my needs.
Color: 1 - Standard
This is a very good safe for the money. My safe arrived promptly and without any damage thanks to good packaging. It is a very solid safe. The fingerprint reader is easy to set up (as long as you read and follow the instructions) and opens quickly using any of my or my wife's fingerprints with very few misreads. I have high confidence that either of us would be able to get the safe open very quickly and efficiently in case of emergency. The pre-drilled mounting holes at the rear and on the bottom of the safe made mounting rather easy. The mounting hardware that came with the safe seems adequate, but I decided to spend the extra few bucks and buy my own heavier duty mounting hardware from Home Depot instead. The carpeted interior is a nice touch, and the LED light is easy to remove and replace after the batteries are inserted. (Just don't be overly rough with the thin plastic and you'll be fine.) The utility shelf and height adjustment pegs inside the safe while not necessarily flimsy are definitely not sturdy, so take care not to put too much stress on them. The reviewers who are griping about the lack of rubber pads or other protection on the exterior bottom of the safe do not take into consideration that the bottom needs to sit flush against a surface for proper mounting. Sure, you'll need to take extra care not to scrape the bottom of the safe against a shelf or floor to prevent damage, but that isn't overly difficult to accomplish with a safe of this moderate size and weight. Speaking of size, I can easily fit two Glock pistols (G17, G19), a couple of extra cartridges, a few boxes of ammo plus a laser sight and several other knick-knacks into the safe. If you're looking to fit more than three or four pistols plus accessories into a safe, then you may want to consider something larger. ... show more

  • TOOK A RISK purchasing a new companies safe, HERES WHAT I THOUGH!
Color: 1 - Standard
I ordered this safe a month ago to keep my H&K P2000 from my wife's son and house guests. I found a missing screw, and here's why I still gave it a 5 out of 5 below... After receiving my safe, it looked well, the measurements matched up, and was perfect for what I needed. I registered two scans of two fingers on each hand for both myself and my wife so that no matter what, we can get it open. Not only that, but we both know a key code we can share or use in case we're missing a finger. DID I SAY THEIR FINGERPRINT SCANNER WORKS EVERY TIME? DIRTY FINGER, WET FINGER, WHATEVER! I was very skeptical about biometric scanners not working like what's typical on computers.. not this thing, it works great. I would trust my life to it opening if someone broke in and I was going for my gun. The interior light is nice, although very basic in design. The batteries are common (AAA, or AA.. I forget, but it's easily replaceable with one phillips head screwdriver). The safe is very secure, made of thick metal, thicker than your average gun safe for sure, looks professional and high-tech, and even if the batteries die out you can still use a key on top of that.. talk about versatility. You can disable the sounds so that intruders won't hear you, or leave them on. It beeps occasionally if you leave it unlocked, reminding you to lock your **** back up before someone finds it! Comes with mounting screws, and they work well in my headboard's cubby space. Very secure. Size wise, I could lay out four full size pistols in this safe, although it would be tight. I have one pistol, a large pistol cleaning kit, electronic earmuffs, 2 magazines, and a box of 50 rounds. It's a little tight, but everything fits neatly. The safe's mechanism is very simple if you pop it open, but it's not a military safe, it's an affordable highly secure safe with tons of features packed in that just WORKS. I swapped out the batteries on purchase with new Duracels, just to be on the safe side, although the ones included worked fine when I tested it out. The most important thing to me however... was the companies customer service. They were apologetic, and quick to ship out a new screw to replace the one missing with my shipment for free, very quickly. Not only that but they maintained contact to make sure everything was going well with their product, that I received the missing piece, the experience with me as a customer as well. Honestly, I haven't felt this appreciated as a customer in a while. I felt like it was that mom and pop shop that is excited that you even graced their store with their presence, and wants you to be their facebook friend more than tell you how much their new product costs, but they're still talking business too. This safe was the best value for what I was looking for, and now that I've had it for a month, if I had to replace it, I would just order this same one. Viking is my safe company of choice, and I spent a lot of time researching. Also, the packaging was pretty good too. ... show more

  • As Advertised
Color: 1 - Standard
This is a very solid safe and at about 26+ pounds no one will carry it away quickly. It does have pop out holes for screws on the bottom and rear side. Two solid bolts were included. The specialized long, narrow key is more secure than the barrel type keys. The key hole is hidden behind the Viking badge and a screw driver is needed to remove the badge. It could be left off, or loosened with one badge hole cut out so the badge could rotate away from the key hole. The key is awkward and could not be used as quickly as a barrel key in an emergency (my opinion). Viking cautions about older folks’ fingerprints may not be usable due to aging factors of older skin. I’m 77 and have no issues. The key pad also works very well. The sound (beeps) May be turned off EXCEPT for when the door is left open, That is considered a safety feature but I find it annoying when I’m moving things around and want the door open for more than the allowed maximum two minutes. To be fair, once in a rare while I have returned to my home and found I had not secured my previous hand-gun safe. Now, knowing that it will start beeping, I remember to close it. Lastly, a missing feature is an option to plug into an external power source, keeping the battery system as a backup. I’ve had it about a month and, to date, am impressed. Oh, one other thing that would be useful is either backlit keys (use too much power) or glow-in-the-dark key pads. Thanks for reading. ... show more

  • smaller than it sounds in the description - inside dimensions
Color: 1 - Standard
I like it but am returning it - the size is not as described; what is shown is the EXTERIOR dimensions -----the interior is about 2 inches smaller due to door / lock thickness so instead of 10x10x14 it is more like 8x13 or so- a full sized handgun will not fit unless laying down sideways and Im not stacking them loose on their sides (its just not a good idea) ---- this is just a hazard of buying online where you cant 'see' the item before you buy it but no worries, amazon return policy is great so If you are considering this one, just be aware that it is not as large as it sounds- if there is any doubt, get the bigger one which is what I am going to wind up doing. I wish I'd just ordered the larger one in the first place but It sounded like this one would work. As to the item itself, the safe arrived on time, undamaged and appears to be very good quality for the price--- thick steel and good solid feeling lock but what I need to store will not fit unless laying down (that wont work). One thing to consider: the keypad is not lighted and it is a little difficult to find the key to activate the bio lock (pound key) and impossible (for me at least) to do the combo unlock with out a light. I can say the key is pretty good looking and I don't see how it can be easily opened or picked at least not by using u-tube videos like some of the others. breaking into this one without a good set of tools, some noise and time would be challenging I think and it should be enough to deter the casual thief or child from getting into something they shouldn't. --fingerprints were easy to program and opens just about every time, the keypad combo was a little tricky to program but works well after you get it done it seems to be a good safe / lockbox but measure carefully and round down (its smaller than it sounds)-- don't forget to allow for the door opening size as well. ... show more

  • Excellent customer service. They actually stand by their products and care about their customers.
Color: 3 - Top
I don't normally write amazon reviews because in most cases what I get is exactly what I expected and there isn't much I have to say, but this is a rare exception and I thing worth reading for anybody interested in buying this safe. Yesterday, after about 6 months of use, my safe started to have an issue locking, a perfectly usually problem for a mechanical product to have which I bought because it was the cheapest professional safe I could find (with actual security and not something a 15yr old could get into with a screw driver or bolt cutters like 90% of the "safes" i looked at.). I called the number on the manual (first good clue: they actually list contact info) and the message asked me to leave my problem in an e-mail. I sent one out half expecting to never hear from anybody in response but what actually happened was surprising: They responded to me within a *only few hours*. It was a real person. With real expertise (not some customer service center telling me my issue was very important to them, blah blah blah). With a real solution. And they promised to help me no matter what because they stood by their products, regardless of if the 1yr warranty was in effect or expired... What??! I followed the guide they sent me (with easy to understand pictures) and the issue was solved, but they had made it really clear that if it hadn't been they would take it back and replace it, so i wasn't even worried. This doesn't happen anymore. So why am I giving it 5 stars if it had an issue? Because besides that issue it has performed perfectly for me and certainly exceeded my expectations for being like half the cost of other professional quality safes. It does everything it is supposed to and feels sturdy and solid. It reads my fingerprints better then my iphone 7s did (which isn't saying *that* much, but i havent had to use the combination in so long i may have forgotten it, which is a good thing.). It doesn't open when i use other fingers then the one it scanned (showing that it actually *reads* fingerprints and isn't just opening for fingers.). And because if it has any mechanical failures I know that the company cares and will solve the problem. Especially that last part is more then i can say about most companies, so this gets my recommendation and i felt like was worth my time reviewing. ... show more

  • This is why I love Amazon so much!
Color: 1 - Standard
So after a recent break in I am planning on buying a small gun for protection (and for fun) but I do have three kids so before a gun purchase of course I needed to purchase a safe that the kids could not get in. I knew I needed a safe that could hold a small gun but I was not even sure what gun I wanted, so the size of the safe needed to be somewhat large. The safe also had to be easy to open in an emergency so I was looking for something with biometrics. As I started researching guns safes it became apparent that this safe seemed to be the one for me. Cost was low, quality seemed high, and the safe was much bigger then I needed. Well I am very glad that I decided to buy this safe. The quality is very high and impressive, if this safe cost twice as much I would have been happy with the quality. It is going to take a great amount of force and work to open this safe without the code/finger/key. So I am very happy on that front. I noticed one reviewer stated his/her door was not flush, this was not the case for my safe, it was built perfectly. The keypad works great but what works even better then the keypad is the fingerprint scanner, which impressed me greatly. The instructions recommend you take a few scans of your fingerprint to ensure it opens every time. Well even with just one fingerprint stored it opened every time I used it (about 15 to 20 attempts). I currently have three fingerprints stored and it has NEVER failed to open. I was getting worried that is was opening too well so I had my kids and wife try to open it just to be sure. It never opened for them. I am truly impressed with this safe. The safe itself has plenty of room for multiple guns, ammo, and other items you would like to store. The internal shelf is a great add-on and the carpet inside is also great. The internal light does a good job lighting the safe up. I love the fact it tells me the battery level so you have time and know when you need to replace it, a nice feature indeed. Overall I am so glad I got this safe. Looking at the price and what I got, I can't find one thing wrong with this safe. ... show more
