  • Perfect Size for a Family of 4
Style: Pellet Grill
This is my second Traeger. I own the tailgater and I've had it for four years. Great little grill for the price. Did almost anything I wanted. Really great for Ribs. but only one rack at a time. Well the heating elements was going bad, and decided that I wanted to get a new Traeger. I did a lot of research before deciding on the ironwood. It's a little pricey, but I saw the same model at our local ace hardware and they wanted $2K for the exact model. The assembly is pretty easy to do. I put all of it by myself and only needed help with turning it up right. Once you get it all ready for the first cook you have to read the instructions and do the precook set up. There was some oil on some of the part so the precook will get rid of all that residue. My first cook was chicken thighs. They came out great. Use Super Smoker for 30 minutes and then increase to 450. They came out great. Next did steak and came out perfect. Did shrimp the following day and same result. Doing Prime Rib for Easter and sure it will come out great also. Like I said I did a lot of research between the Pro series and Ironwood, and glad I picked the Ironwood, cost a little more, but the super smoker is what sold me. I looked a several models at Costco, but they sell a complete different series that's not listed on amazon. The WiFi is great also, my only problem is that I could not find on my phone in the app store. Found it with my tablet, but not the phone, but my phone is very old. Plan on doing a brisket flat in the near future. Tried that on my other Traeger and was very disappointed. Hope the Ironwood will provide the same taste as Texas BQ. ... show more

  • Superior to my Pro 22
Style: Pellet Grill
I am a Traeger fan (their grills not so much their pellets). I already have a Pro 22 but wanted to upgrade to the Ironwood 650 due to the direct drive motor and the improved way it circulates the smoke. I’m very happy with my purchase. My first cook was a bone in pork shoulder and I utilized the super smoke function for the first several hours. Excellent results. Tonight I did a reverse sear on a thick T-bone steak. After the steak reached 110 internally (which was easy to track using the supplied probe and the WiFire app) I kicked the Traeger up to 500 to finish the steak. Got some nice grill marks and steak was nice and juicy. Delivery from Amazon was great. A two man team unloaded the package and placed it in my garage for me. Although free set up was offered I declined it because I wanted to make sure it was done right. Set up was easy and took about an hour. Only help I needed was to stand the grill upright after the legs and leg braces were attached. The Ironwood holds temperatures much more consistently Than my Pro 22 and the time it takes to recover a temp after having the lid open is also a great improvement. I use Cookin Pellets brand of pellets and they performed perfectly and really give a nice smokey flavor. Update: I have read reviews that complain there isn’t enough visible smoke emanating from this Traeger, well that is true and that’s a good thing. The 650 is designed to circulate the smoke and keep it in the chamber longer. I burn the same pellets in my Pro 22 and smoke pours out of the chimney rather than staying in the chamber with the protein producing excellent results. Is the final BBQ product as smokey tasting as a wood burning offset smoker? Nope, however it is much easier to use, and with the right pellets produces an excellent result. ... show more

  • State of the art smoker
Style: Pellet Grill
So I was hesitant at first to spring for the Traeger Ironwood 650. I previously owned a vertical Pit Boss and had experienced some random issues with it. So after reviewing the differences I ended up with the Ironwood 650. The features that set it apart were the stackless downdraft exhaust, the super smoke function, the double insulated interior wall, true WiFi, TRU convection cooking, Dual Position Smoke/Sear Bottom Grate, 500* temp max, and pellet sensor. Let’s talk convenience. I’m a novice smoker who can follow pro recipes and get good results. My first cook was a pork butt that the recipe called for a no wrap low n slow cook. The custom program on the Traeger allowed me to program it to cook in 2 stages by itself without me baby sitting it ! The cook started at 200* with a target temp at the probe of 160* then the grill switched by itself to 220* with a target probe temp of 190*. I literally put the food in the grill started the program and went to bed. 11 hours later the butt was cooked to perfection with deep smoke rings. Finally some have complained over the WiFi connectivity. It can be a challenge to get a good signal outside to your cooking area. I bought a reasonably priced range extender from Amazon the TP Link WiFi AC750 extender RE220 for $19.99. Now many people have struggled because they weren’t using the required 2.4 GHZ router signal. Many were using the newer technology 5.0 GHZ wireless routers. I myself am using a dual band 2.4 / 5.0 GHZ router however the above mentioned TP Link extender actually separated my dual bands so I was able to choose the 2.4 GHZ band for compatibility. Follow the WIFi setup instructions for the grill and the range extender and presto ! My grill gets adequate wireless signal from about 100’ away from the router and has never dropped connection. This WiFi connectivity from Traeger is vastly superior to the $200 Thermoworks outboard unit I was using that dropped out all the time. Hopefully this review gives you reasons to take the plunge for an Ironwood Traeger and solves the connectivity issues caused by too low WiFi signal and wrong router signal (5.0 GHZ) Happy smoking ! ... show more
