  • One of the best high end amps with low watts
I loved my princeton reverb however it was definitely an overkill for a personal playing at home. The volume know never went above 2, so I started searching for hand-wired low-wattage amps. I've tried the Fender Champ. It had a really nice sound to it. Very limiting knob controls, but the worst part, was the tiny 8" speaker - the biggest limitation of that particular amp. It had a unique sound but as another reviewer said, it's VERY similar to the rythm channel on Tone King. I've also tried Vox 4HW. Great sound, but trying to push the amp to break-up the tones nicely required an attenuator. And that's where my search for a handwired amp begun and lead me to this amazing amp. I chose it over Vox and Fender for the sound qualities and built in attenuator. The only thing this amp could use would be a built-in spring reverb and perhaps a more audiophile-like encasing .. like some nice wood. Although the advantage of the plastic casing this is in, it can sure take a beating. So it would be easy to take it with you on tours or whatever and not having to worry about damaging it easily or moisture issues that would affect wood.. All-together a great amp. Highly recommend. Also, on a side note, I've also come across Bugera V5 5-Watt amp. I was very pleasantly surprised with the sound quality and all the additional controls.. like Gain and Reverb. After upgrading the tubes this thing sounds as amazing. ... show more

  • Plastic finish and plastic sound. Well read the review
Why a plastic like coating for an expensive amp. It did not sound good at low volumes (tin can effect) recommendations would be a fender Princeton 112 with Eminence Can-Rex . Much better value

  • Perfect home / practice amp, and more!
Tone king really knocked this one out of the park. It's about as simplistic as you can get (2 channels, 2 knobs one tone, one volume), but you can get an entire range out sounds by messing with them and your guitar knobs. Even though the amp is only 5 watts, it's insanely loud - however that's where the built in ironman attenuator comes into play. You can crank the amp to get the tube saturation, and lose almost no tone variance by engaging the attenuator. This makes home practice / jamming amazing and your family & neighbors won't hate you. The clean channel is your blackface tones, the lead channel is your tweed tones...can't get any better than that. This amp also takes pedals like a champ - i run a very simple chain of a reverb tank and boost and it sounds amazing. Honestly couldn't be happier with this purchase - this is endgame for me when it comes to a great home / practice amp. ... show more
