Been at war with a rat for the past month and this trap worked on the 2nd night out! I've tried the sticky pads, nothing. Fancy $40+ electric trap, nothing! That one has great reviews too. Peppermint balls, does repel them but only for so long because the smell fades. This trap was the most affordable and it worked so quickly! First night I placed it near the rat's path and tied it down with a zip tie. Nothing happen. But the next night I moved it directly in it's normal path even though I couldn't tie it down- but rat appeared and got it instantly. The rats can't resist seeing the bait out in the open. After 4 weeks of evading capture I finally caught the rat with these traps. I used sheba gourmet salmon entree cat food as bait. My rat was a smarter one and evaded sticky traps, live traps, and didnt seem to like peanut butter. I decided to place alot of traps to up my chances. Correct trap placement along the edges of the walls is also key in places they travel. I was lucky and only had 1 rat get in. We have since fixed the hole in our limestone foundation and should be good now. This is how it all started. My wife has a good heart, she picked up a nestling from a parking lot. We later learned that it’s not a good idea to pick them up, but she wanted to give the poor animal a chance in life. She gave him a place to sleep and feed him everyday until one morning she didn’t hear him as usual. We kept the bird in our outdoor and meshed covered porch. She saw blood and feather spread around. I went outside to find out the poor bird was eaten, we suspected an iguana, never a rat. It didn’t cross my mind, “I haven’t seen a rat in all these years living here” I thought. We live in a community that has a good sized natural environment close to us, so maybe it was rats. It wasn’t until a after couple of weeks later that I found out. I was alone at home, it was 3 am and i heard a strange sound. It was the rats eating the bird food we left in the porch. Now we know these need to be in containers and not left outside in the open. I also discovered that there were two of them. I’m not afraid of the beasts but also know I should not get too close to them. I gave them a good scare and they ran away. They have now eaten a bird and food from us. I knew now that I should prepare because they will come back for more. Next day, I got the message that my traps will arrive a day later even though I was told they will arrive today. So, I left work early enough to clean the mess and then head to Home Depot to buy these. When I returned it was about to get dark so I read again the reviews that had tips on using dog food and peanut butter. I smeared peanut butter in the triggering plate too. I also pushed the plate just a little bit because they have a small dead zone before triggering. I put these traps in the places they run around, close to walls. I also used a couple of glue traps just in case. It was around 7 pm. Then I went to my things. I knew they will come back. I went to bed around 10 pm and at 11:30pm I heard some snapping sound and then the animal started moving around, struggling with the trap, I could here a sort of cry with a plastic sound, similar to a plastic toy hitting around with the floor. These kept going for about 2-3 minutes and then it all got quiet. I then went to take a look, and saw one dead rat with his head trapped, it died by suffocation. But saw the other rat too, it quickly hid when he saw me and I knew it was scared. I also saw that the other trap was still there close to him and not triggered yet. So I went back to sleep. 2-3 hours later, I then woke up again to another snapping sound but this time no struggle was heard. I knew then that my vengeance was complete. I woke up next day to see them both dead close to each other, they had it coming. I think the worst part was to get rid of their bodies. In the end, these traps work. Been having some after hours issues with rodents at night around the garage. Noticed some rodent poop in a couple of areas and tried various methods to rid of them. Nothing worked until this product. I put a dab of peanut butter per instruction and set the trap near the poop. I also tied the trap with a high strength string incase it caught a big rodent and it tried to run. Two days went by and finally caught one. Decent sized and the trap was in a different area. The string did help and the trap worked very good. Will use from now on. Things i liked: Easy to use ( just put peanut butter, set and forget) Price Reusable Things i do not like: Wish it was a bit larger and heavier Wish it came with a string to tie it ... show more

When these traps work they work well but rats are sneaky and smart and can sometimes trigger these without being caught. When rats actually stick their body in enough and put enough pressure on the trigger pad it will kill them immediatley and these traps are usually so powerful that they flatten anything they snap down on. Easier to use than the old fashoned wood traps and easier to bait and clean too. Don't waste your money on cheap imitations of these traps either. Other trap brands look similar but these other brands are nowhere near as powerful. I bought I pack of 6 cheap imitations and NEVER killed one rat with them (just some unlucky chimpmunks that unfortunetly got under my house). I have killed about four rats with these Tomcat snap traps and only twice have they been triggered but not killed a rat. So 4 out of 6 times they were effective for me. ... show more

I live in Hawaii in a rental. The owner had the mango tree trimmed. Apparently, rats live in the tree tops. They found their way into the attic. Got 2 large ones and 3 smaller ones. This is one of the smaller ones. I tried the peppermint oil to keep them away, but all it did was make my house smell like Christmas. These traps really work. I would have given it 5 stars, but I found the other traps were still intact, but the bait trap filled with peanut butter was empty. I like the ease of use and I feel it is humane since it snaps rather quickly that I feel they die instantly. ... show more
