I've been a Tivo dealer over 10 years. Unfortunately we really can't get Tivo through distributors any longer which is always a question how much longer are they going to be around? For now I have Amazon which is fine but just expect these boxes to last maybe 3-4 years. If you get the extended warranty just FYI they send you a refurb unit and you get about a year and then those die. I replace these all the time they have 100% failure rate by 5 years. They are not made well with high failure rates and your "lifetime" service doesn't transfer to a new box. TiVo has a great UI and when set up properly (finicky at first) it is just an overall nice system but just know they do have a fairly short lifespan. I still install TiVo. I like the system but I do warn my clients about how poorly made the hardware is. ... show more

This is my second TiVo EDGE. I've had every Tivo made since 2001 so I have a lot of history with this company. The Edge is a nice upgrade from the Bolt and a major upgrade from the Roamio. The processor is fast and the UI is smooth and intuitive. My first Edge only lasted several months before it failed to power up. Tivo replaced it under the continual care program and charged me a fee for the new box. Tivos rely on cable cards if you want to record cable television. It is unknown how much longer cable companies will support cable cards now that the FCC is no longer mandating they do so. So if I had to pay full price for this Edge I would be reluctant to do so. But given they were selling for under $200 for Father's Day, coupled with a discount on the annual service to $99/year, it's hard to go wrong with the purchase. If you buy this from Amazon, you will not be offered the discount on service that you get if you purchase it directly from Tivo. However, if they sent you an email offering you the discount, call customer service and request it. It will take you a while to work your way through the system but eventually they will agree to honor the discounted annual service fee. I hope Tivo sticks around for a while. Their product is still better than the cable box DVRs. But eventually streaming TV is going to catch up and surpass what Tivo can offer. I’ve had TiVo since it first came out back in 1998(?) and have upgraded almost every time new TiVos are released. The problem is that TiVo company keeps being sold to companies that don’t understand what made TiVo the best dvr. TiVos interface is the best of all dvrs and is easy enough for my 80 year old mother to use. Mom doesn’t understand how to use the embedded apps for movie channels. I am great full that all the HBO and most of the other pay channels are provided by Frontier and show up on my channel lists. It is a pain when I have to change to an app on my tv to get HBO Max and other pay channels that aren’t available through TiVos subscription services. I’d still recommend TiVo but I wish a company that actually wanted to make great dvrs would buy TiVo. ... show more

This is my third Tivo device, and far and away the worst. I loved my first Tivo, purchased in 2000; I preached the gospel of that thing, told all my friends how cool and convenient it was to record things on that device instead of a VCR. It finally died about a decade later, so I bought the new current model. Its hard drive failed after about 4 years, so I found a way to install a third-party drive and got another 7 or 8 years out of it. Finally, it caved last fall. This new Edge is horrible by comparison. First, the UI is very different, which took some getting used to. The convenience of 6 tuners is a nice upgrade from 4 (though the capacity is a pittance after what I'd gotten used to). But there is NO EXCUSE for the thing just sporadically restarting once every few days. Tech support has been no help. I could, theoretically, use the DVR that comes with my cable subscription, but I have grown so accustomed to the Tivo interface. This substandard and disappointing machine may finally be the end of my relationship with Tivo. ... show more
