  • Set up is difficult, but WORTH IT!
Size: 500 GB Style: Cable DVR (Alexa Certified) Pattern Name: Streaming Media Player
The Bolt works as advertised....and is a pleasure to use. I bought both the Bolt and one Mini for my home. I wish I knew then what I know now....the installation and set-up would have been much smoother. Here are some tips for those getting ready to purchase a TiVo Bolt for use with Cable TV: 1. They tell you you need a CableCARD, and this is true. BUT....what they don't tell you is that the CableCARD will only handle BASIC Cable. If you have ANY tiers above basic....you have to have an additional little box called a Tuning Adapter. The typical cable service tech does not carry either of these on their truck and you have to go to your local cable TV office to pick them up. 2. The Tuning Adapter is required for Tier 1, 2, movie channels, pay per view, video on demand, etc....because all of these channels require individual IP addresses. The CableCARD alone won't cut it. My first Tuning Adapter was defective...which delayed full functionality for almost a week after getting it. Make sure you get a cable service tech who is familiar with CableCARD's and Tuning Adapters. In my experience....very few are. 3. The Bolt communicates with the Mini via either Ethernet (fine if your house is hard wired with Cat5 cable), or a networking protocol called MoCa (stands for Multimedia over Coax Alliance). No need to buy external MoCa attachments to set this sort of network up....the Bolt will act as a MoCa bridge itself. In effect....it is using your home's coax cable (that you use for Cable TV) as it's network connection. BUT..... 4. Make sure you have your cable guys install a MoCa filter on your in-house cabling to prevent diluting the strength of the connection between your Bolt and your Mini. My cable guys put the MoCa filter in the attic where the line from outside enter my home. There is a splitter to send individual cables to each room that has a TV and they installed the filter just before the splitter. What that does (they said)....it it prevents the MoCa signals between your Bolt and Mini from going outside your home and down the cable lines to the neighbors house...diluting the signal. Before I got that filter....the Mini would lose connection to the Bolt frequently and it was a pain to get it to reconnect. I used to have to reboot my router, my Bolt, AND my Mini in a specific sequence and go through a lot of rigamarole to get it to connect IF it would connect. NO MORE! With a tighter network....it connects quickly and easily without having to reboot everything. This setup is a DVR....yes. But oh so much more! You don't have to know the date, time, and channel. IT KNOWS all of that. You tell it what you want to record....and it goes out there and finds it.....INCLUDING STREAMING Channels such as NetFlix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, YouTube, and much much more. (My cable guy was shocked to know it would do that....he said it was "Dope!") It also can be set up to record entire seasons of any TV show you enjoy. As I mentioned...the Bolt has what is in effect a built-in AppleTV or Roku. Most of the common streaming channels that you can watch in addition to your cable channels. The remote is both IR (have to aim it at the Bolt or Mini)....AND....radio frequency....which means you don't have to aim it at the TV or the Bolt. You can aim it the opposite direction....it doesn't care....it just works. It is also a smart remote. It learns your TV or AV receiver's codes and you can use it to turn your TV on/off, change video inputs, adjust volume on either the TV OR your AV receiver. Wifey loves not having to use so many remotes! In closing....although the first several days were frustrating and tested my patience....it was all worth it once I finally got everything configured properly. LOVE IT! ... show more

  • It's Not all positive.
Size: 500 GB Style: Cable DVR (Alexa Certified) Pattern Name: Streaming Media Player
First the system is a bit expensive. The subscription for the channel interface is about $150 per year but that is a bit cheaper than renting a cable box. If you care to run the Tivo Mini remote box for another TV you will need a moca, adaptor another $70 that seems should be included with the package with as expensive as it is. Note: Yes the Motorola moca adaptor does work with the Tivo system mini box save $25. Figuring out how to hook everything up. There are a lot of sources and instructions as to how to hook everything up, a bit confusing. Do I need one moca adapter or two? What the heck is a moca adaptor. Fortunately, only one for me. The apps, the system is set up for are limited, wanted to get Disney Plus to watch Hamilton it was unavailable. (We had to call Tivo to figure out why we couldn't find the app) We ended up buying a Fire Stick to get the Disney Plus and a number of apps that were unavailable on Tivo. We heard that they have their software engineers working on Disney Plus due to demand, but not in time for Hamilton. The On Demand channels are not available because Tivo has no direct link to the cable channels to get on demand. There are apps such as HBO GO that are similar to On Demand, that are good stand-ins for the HBO On Demand. This part is on Spectrum cable. It took almost two months to get all my cable channels because there is an adapter box and a card that plugs into the Tivo supplied by the cable company. My cable company had a bunch of old cards that were obsolete. As I recall the card that fit into the new Tivo box had to be newer than 2017. Eventually they found one. They came out three times trying various things to get the system to work. After some wrangling Spectrum did make amends by giving me credit for the time I couldn't use the Tivo system. I was satisfied with their compensation, and their willingness to work with a non Spectrum box. Now for a few positives. With the Tivo mini (and the moca adapter) The mini offers full record and playback functions from, the remote location. My Tivo system has a full terabyte of record capacity. I can record 6 different channels at a time. I am saving over $35 per month on two cable box rentals after paying for the Tivo subscription. There is a feature on Tivo where you can watch recorded sporting events or newscasts at 25% faster than real time. The sound sounds normal but you have to listen faster. A lot of sports you can watch at higher speed but you still have the slo-mo to check out the details. After the initial curve of getting things hooked up and the learning curve. I have owned my Tivo system for about a year and a half. Back then, you would call up the cable company "Why don't I have On Demand Channels with my Tivo system?" Don't know and they would have to ask someone else why. I'm sure things are probably better now that people are more aware of the Tivo system, eccentricities. I haven't really delved into this but Tivo does attempt to introduce content on their own channels, but for the most part their content you can't pause or record so to me it doesn't make much sense, at this time. Maybe in time they will figure this out eventually. For the most part after the initial setup I consider Tivo a positive experience. There are a few negatives but I figure after about two years use we will have paid for the Tivo system in just cable box rental. With what they charge for cable these days it's hard to believe they stick you for box rental as well. I do recommend the Amazon Fire Stick to supplement for the few drawbacks of the Tivo System. ... show more

  • Poor reliability. Lock ups.
Size: 500 GB Style: Cable DVR (Alexa Certified) Pattern Name: Streaming Media Player
First unit I received from Amazon failed in less than two weeks of light use. Could not record shows. Could not program. Unit was brand new. Ordered exchange/replacement from Amazon and received in 2 days.as also a new unit. Replacement unit set up OK and seemed to be working properly. I set up a couple of shows to record as a test and they recorded as they should have . HOWEVER, when trying to playback recordings, the unit would go into a loop when I tried to select a show to watch. I had tried numerous times to reset unit hoping for a better result with no success. I became so disgusted that I am returning the second one to Amazon shortly. I would not recommend this unit at all. ... show more

  • Bolt Vox is great
Size: 500 GB Style: Cable DVR (Alexa Certified) Pattern Name: Streaming Media Player
TiVo Bolt Vox 500. Excellent. Well built product. Nice remote. Fast and a lot of very nice features. Hooked it up to MOCA system with 3 mini's. Works great. All have voice control. Used POE filter approved for the Bolt Vox and MOCA approved splitters. Cable company needs to sync. If you plan on HULU you may have problems streaming. Its HULU fault, not TiVo. Read internet comments first. All others stream great. I used netgear 1200 power line adaptors to get ethernet from modem to the main TiVo box. Note: you can use wifi if only using the main tivo, but you have to have ethernet wire to it if you plan on using a mini. You dont need any other MOCA adaptors with the new bolt. Its built in. Follow the setup steps close. Its not real clear. For MOCA you have to run through part of setup twice. Same for mini. These negative reviews are BS. Its a great streaming/recording system,,,IF you hook it up correctly. ... show more
