Long story short, I wanted a Thermoworks Thermapen MK4 but didn’t want to spend $100+, so i settled and ordered a Lavatools Javelin Pro which turned out to be JUNK. I was going to cave in and order a Thermpen and be done, but saw they released this as a knock off and ordered one...Then Thermpen went on sale and I ordered one of those. So here i am with three nice instant read thermometers. Maybe i can help someone make a decision. The TP-19 seems to be pretty well made, about on par with the Javelin Pro. It is not as high quality as the Thermapen, but it also costs a 1/4 as much.The TP-19 feels lighter and the plastic feels a bit cheaper than the Thermapen. For example, the battery cover screws into plastic, where as the thermapen battery cover screws into a metal nut. The battery cover on the Javelin Pro just uses something like a quarter to turn it and does not inspire much confidence (once again, terrible waterproofing). AAA batteries (Yes!) in the Thermapen and TP-19 and 2032 coin battery in the javelin (gross). It opens up and closes easily, and turns on and off as you do so. As for the speed differences between the three units, I can not really tell any difference. All three are very quick and all three seem to be about the same on accuracy (I’m an amateur so they are plenty accurate for me). The displays are all pretty easy to read. The T-19 has a bright red LCD display, kind of like an old alrm clock. The other two use backlit LCD screens, with the Thermapen being automatic and the Javelin having to be turned on. The Javelin and TP-19 rotate 2 directions (up or down), while the Thermapen can rotate 4 directions. The accelerometer in the TP-19 is a bit more jumpy. As you move it around the screen cant always decide which direction it wants to face, which is not a big problem, but something i noticed when testing it. The Javelin and TP-19 have magnets built in which allow you to stick them to a fridge or other metalic areas, but the thermapen does not. Thermapen and TP-19 claim to be fully IP-67 waterproof, where as the Javelin is just water resistant (debatable). If you want a fast handheld thermometer, i think the Thermo Pro TP-19 is a great option. If you you want to spend a bit more on the Thermapen for a better quality unit that has a great company behind it, its a great option too. Thermoworks is THE name in thermometers and are used in many professional kitchens around the world for a reason. My only real advice is to skip the Lavatools Javelin Pro. At $50+ it offers up nothing to the table. Their customer service is useless and the unit has no waterproofing, which to me is important for a kitchen thermometer. ... show more

This little probe has improved my grilling results by taking the guesswork out of measuring done-ness. It registers temperature quickly, usually under 3 seconds, and the display is bright enough to see even in the crazy bright North Carolina summer sunshine, yet not blinding in the dark of night. Results are slightly slower in colder weather, and can take up to 8 seconds or so if it's in the 50-60 degree F range, but that is to be expected due to the cooler initial probe temperature. I have not tried this in the dead of winter and the time will probably be up to 30 seconds if the probe begins the measurement from freezing. The folding construction is nice and keeps the very sharp probe tip from accidentally skewering fingers, and the effort required to open and close it feel appropriate to hold the probe at any angle, from fully closed to fully open. Folded or open, it weighs appropriately for its size and feels good in-hand. Default temp scale is chosen with a physical switch, so it stays at the units you select, Fahrenheit or Celsius (it is inside the water-resistant battery door, so it's a set-and-forget option) and a handy magnet allows mounting on the side of the grill's tray (not the hot part--it would melt) or your fridge. The display intelligently flips to enable reading no matter which angle you are holding it at, but if you take readings with the unit being almost flat on its back, it is possible to see the display flip to display numbers upside down. Fortunately, a slight change of angle is all that's needed to set the display right. There is a hold button on the front of the display which will pause the temperature reading from changing for those who may have trouble registering the value when the display temperature changes quickly or is useful to keep the temperature on screen if you had to put the probe in the roast at an angle where seeing the display was difficult. Hold time is around 1.5 seconds. A handy key for temperatures of various meats is on the back by type, but only for common meats, so if you're making Brontosaurus burgers, you'll have to do your own research. No complaints here about this handy, compact, functional product! I've owned this product for around 4 months with no battery changes (it's 1xAAA) required yet, and I am happy to recommend it! ... show more

When my wife suddenly died seven months ago, I had to learn some basic cooking. She had purchased an air fryer, and I knew that one important part of food safety was having the correct meat temperature. The digital thermometer we had was okay, but I did not have confidence in it. And it was getting old. The ThermoPro TP19 had good reviews and it sold at a decent price, so I decided to give it a try. Several things I like: * Clear display * Set it down, it is off until you pick it up again to recheck the temperature * Waterproof so it can be washed or deal with other situations * Pop the probe into the action position and it's ready to go * Other colors may be available, but bright read makes it easy to spot after setting it down There are other features, but I have not tried them.
