Description

Linda Abbit, founder of Tender Loving Eldercare and a veteran of the caregiving industry, shares her advice on taking care of an older parent or loved one and how to handle everything that goes along with this dramatic life change. Being a caregiver can be a difficult role. It requires patience, tenderness, selflessness, and hard work. Providing care for someone, whether it’s a parent, a loved one, or as a professional requires a high level of self-love and self-care. But while it may be a rewarding experience to care for a loved one, the emotional and physical stress of caregiving can lead to burnout and exhaustion—causing caregivers to put themselves and their own well-being in the background. How can you fulfill your role as a caregiver without losing yourself? Conscious Caregiver teaches you how to navigate caring for your loved one, whether it’s full-time in-house caregiving or hiring support from outside services. With information on how to talk to your loved ones about the situation, handle the emotional stress, stay financially secure, and take the time to care for yourself, this guide can help you care for your loved one and yourself at the same time. • Be prepared for what’s ahead
I love this book ! My brother has the symptoms of early onset of what was diagnosed as temporal lobe dementia. He can still live on his own but I foresee that he’s going to need more of my attention and probably need placement in a an assisted living facility. My resentment of having to be his care taker and my frustration dealing with his inability to comprehend and his own frustration with his situation has been an issue for me. Since I read Linda Abbit’s book I feel so much more at ease: the suggestions she offers to deal with our loved ones as well as with other family members have worked for me. What I find especially useful are the lists of questions to ask the personnel at care facilities - now I feel very well equipped to choose the right place for my brother when the time comes. Thank you, Linda, for making my life easier! ... show more

  • A MUST READ FOR ANY CAREGIVER
"The Conscious Caregiver: A Mindful Approach to Caring for Your Loved One Without Losing Yourself" is the most helpful guide I, as a caregiver to my husband, have read. As I faced burnout I read this, and feel 100% better, encouraged, advised, and able to now understand all the nuances of caregiving. Without any reservation I recommend this, and will reread it to give myself the care and yes, mental respite and reinforcement that has been missing in this journey of mine and is needed. I feel better about my life having read "The Conscious Caregiver: A Mindful Approach to Caring for Your Loved One Without Losing Yourself." ... show more

  • good for caregiver read
Good conversation with caregivers on the challenges of caring for another, what it means, and how the client can explore the emotions and ups and downs of caregiving. It also speaks to the universality of caregiving in generation (you are not alone).

  • A practical, kind approach to Caregiving
This book was recommended in an advice column in our newspaper for someone who was having a hard time with patience with their aging parent even though they are not the primary Caregiver. Since that hit home, I bought the book. It is a kind, practical approach to relationships with Care Recipients, advice on being the primary caregiver, advice on assisting with Caregiving from near or far, and stages of Caregiving including choosing Assisted Living/Memory Care/Hospice. It is very good. ... show more

  • Great book on saving yourself while being a caregiver for someone else
I really love this book. Lots if great ideas on how to maintain my sense of self while caring for my Mom who has moderate stage of alzheimers. Mindfulness is such a great skill to have and I highly recommend it of you aren't currently practicing it. It's great for depression, anxiety and to remember to take care of my own needs while being the only caregiver for my Mom. I've just started reading this book and already have some great tips in the 1st chapter!!! ... show more

  • A Must Read for Every Caregiver
This book offered my sisters and I valuable information that helped us navigate the unexpected challenges of being a caregiver. We found her tips, exercises and resource suggestions were tremendously helpful in helping us deal with all we had to face with making sure our mother got the best care possible, while also making sure we cared for our own well-being. I feel having read it before I needed it was very helpful. ... show more

  • If you are a Caregiver, this is your handbook!
I purchased this book to read in preparation for a workshop and was not very far along when I realized what a valuable resource "The Conscious Caregiver" is. Linda Abbit's book is a wonderful companion to bring with you on your caregiving journey; her soulful approach to caregiving begins with acknowledging one's role as a caregiver and travels through to the territory of grief and loss at the end of one's caregiving experience. There are tips, exercises and resource suggestions throughout and the writing and subject stays gentle, straight forward and focused (because as caregivers, that is exactly what we need!). If you don't need this yet, I'm pretty sure you know someone who does. ... show more
