  • Our Hair and Scalp Knows Best
"I guarantee if our hair and scalp could talk, most of us would be deaf from from the yelling and fussing we would receive." (p. 40) Truer words, made from first hand observations and listening to her clients, have never been spoken. When I read that sentence I realized I needed to go back to listening to what my hair and scalp were telling me. Yesterday when I shampooed, my hair felt like string. Yikes! My hair and scalp were telling me I need to step up my hair washing routine to twice a week. I know I get the best results with that routine because those 'fluffy' areas get with the program, I have no itching, and my hair feels soft and pliant. Listening to others, who really don't know any more than I do, I tried to see how many days I could get out of a once a week wash. What I got over an extended period of time was excessive hair breakage. Many of the natural hair authors I've read teach a lot of the same things - which is good because it means we are paying attention, but there is always that certain something from each one that sticks. Listen to, hear and put into practice what your hair and scalp are telling you and you won't go wrong is what I got (and will keep) yesterday. It does take a minute to find the product(s)that works for our individual hair, but patience is a virtue not a cardinal sin. Thank you Mrs. Akbari for educating us that our hair and scalp knows best. ... show more

  • I love my hair!
This book is very informative. Since reading the book, I have learned so much about caring for my natural hair as well as my daughter. This is a great read.

  • This Book Covers the History of Black Women and Our love/hate Relationship with Our Hair
I bought this book a few weeks ago and when it came in the mail..I could NOT put it down. Not only did the author cover hair care techniques but she lovingly addressed the unhealthy habits and myths that we have about AA hair and how it should be cared for. If you are ready to get out of that rut..grow hair...loose hair, hate hair...braid/weave hair...grow hair(again), love hair...loose hair etc(again)..THEN THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU! The author gives you the explanation as to WHY our hair is unique, beautiful and fragile...and how we need to take care of it to OPTIMIZE healthy, stronger and LONGER hair. Now, if you're not ready to renew your mind and daily hair care regimen then you might wanna pass on this book. It's for sisters that are SERIOUS about the care of their hair. Buy the book...that's all I can say :) I've followed the tips in here and have seen significant change in my hair!!!! ... show more

  • Awful
This book was not about hair care at all! It was chapter after chapter of positive thinking. It says "Believe you can have good hair". Waste of time and money

  • good book
My daughter's hair isn't exactly like the hair it talks about but it gives us some things to try and pointers. Good book

  • Not Very Good! Don't Waste Your Money!
The book was not very well organized. It promised so much, but delivered nothing. I just got done reading it and I really did not get much out of it. There was nothing new to take from the book. The author repeated herself a lot. Do yourself a favor and find another book.

  • The Black Women's Guide to Beautiful Hair: A Positive Approach to Managing any Hair Type and Style
This book changed my outlook about my hair. I had just about given up. I thought I had no hope. But after reading the book and following Lisa Akbari's advice I turned my hair loss around. Now my hair is long and beautiful. Thank you Lisa. You are indeed a Phenonmenal Woman.

  • Wake Up Call
I'm so glad I read this book. She explains basic easy to follow hair care regimes that are applicable to locks and relaxed. She also explores myths, bad habits, and their origins. She talked about product requirements but I don't recall any specific product recommendations. I especially liked her thoughts on dandruff, daily care and the need for both moisturizers and hair oil. I wished that she had gone into a little more detail on what to look for in a moisturizer. This book provides valuable pieces to the hair care puzzle. ... show more
