I finally gave up trying to fight the deer by lesser means and decided to put up an 8.5" fence, which involved getting 10' t-posts. I'm under 5' tall; those posts are twice as tall as I am! Standing on a step ladder, I couldn't begin to reach the top of the posts to pound them in. So I used this 1.8" x 14.6" drill auger bit to drill holes approximately a foot deep, which sets the posts into the ground up to the bottom of the fin. Nine feet is a whole heck of a lot more manageable than 10! We have red clay here, so the trick was to drill down a little, pull out the bit and knock the dirt off to the side, then drill a little more, knock; repeat until the chuck of the drill is roughly at ground level. One thing that turned out greater than expected is that, by using this auger bit, you can get the holes drilled straight so that it's easier to keep the posts plumb when driving them in the rest of the way. Even if you're short like me, if your step ladder is 8 or more feet tall, you can do the whole job yourself if you have to. If you're taller, a six-foot ladder may be enough. ... show more

This was exactly what we needed to drill a HUGE number of planting holes over 3 weekends. We were planting a large area of mondo grass, which involved planting 1000+ sprigs of mondo. We started digging the holes by hand with a trowel, then quickly realized that it would take the rest of our lives to complete the process by hand. I ordered this auger bit to drill the holes and it was fantastic! With the right soil conditions, it performed beautifully. We drilled all the holes over a period of several days (not all at once). Tips for getting the best results: DO provide good spoil conditions. The soil should be damp and soft, not wet, not dry, not hard. If the soil is hard and dry, water it thoroughly and wait (in our case it was a day or two) to let the water drain and soften the soil. DO NOT drill too many holes at a time because your drill will overheat...the harder the dirt, the harder the drill must work. ... show more

Was iffy since I saw a review where the auger broke. Tried anyhow and so glad I didn't let that review stop me. There are a slew of plants that cannot be yanked out, they have to be dug out. This auger has helped with the process. I can see how it would've broke like the pic I saw IF you do not reverse the drill and just yank it out of the ground. Once the auger is in the ground, you shouldn't pull up, just reverse the drill and let it remove itself. I would recommend! The pics attached are of 1 particular plant that starts off as a tiny seed (smaller than a pea) but grows over time and can be bigger than the size of a potato...... Wish I would've found this tool yrs ago!! ... show more
