Description

About Swagman "Ride, paddle, explore: seek your adventure" That philosophy was the intention of founders Jim and Jan Morris who saw an opportunity to create a better way to transport your bike back in the early 90’s. Swagman was one of the first companies worldwide to design and market a hitch style bike rack. Over the years, that small bike rack company based in the Okanagan Valley of British Columbia grew to include numerous other ground breaking designs in the North American Bicycle, RV and Automobile markets.

  • Sturdy Unit
The unit has some weight to it and assembly/installation was very simple. I installed it on a GMC Sierra Ext Cab and although the unit sticks out from the back of the vehicle you cannot drop the tailgate down completely. Driving from Indiana to Florida the unit did not loosen the entire trip and the bikes remained clamped solid. I added a lock washer to the bolt that comes with the unit for securing it to my receiver. If your going to leave your bike(s) on the unit when traveling I would recommend you run a cable lock through your wheels and one of the tube holders before clamping down the top plate. This will also help ensure you do not potentially lose your wheels while traveling, especially if you have the quick release wheels. There are holes in the top plate that will allow you to install a pad lock so the bike(s) cannot be stolen by simply removing the 2 hand tightened thumb wheels that clamp the bikes down in the rack. If you have girls bike you may want to consider purchasing a tube that attaches to the bikes seat stem and handle bar stem. This bar would sit in the carrier saddle and keep your bikes parrallel to the ground in the carrier if your concerned about the height of the road to your bikes wheel. ... show more

  • Solid construction, takes hard hits
This thing is solid. I have had some brain-damaged drives and forgotten that was on there while going over a huge dip. This thing just won't break. Now, mind you, this isn't meant to dangle a Lexus from the precipice of Everest, but it does hold bikes very solidly and doesn't make any noise. My only recommendation to make it better is to include sticky shims so it doesn't wiggle up and down on slightly (and I do mean SLIGHTLY, like 2mm vertical) oversized 2" diameter connectors. It's not noticeable when the arm is off, but when you have bikes on there, it does move a little bit up and down. This does not work with trailer-hitch locks, as it has a threaded bolt that connects it to the vehicle, which is a specific size. If you plan on taking the top part off temporarily, make SURE you hold on to the nut/bolt. I held on to the bolt, forgot the nut because it was in the little recessed area, then drove off. Had to go to Home Depot to replace it (it's 10mm nylon lock nut, btw...). $0.50, but still, you don't need to spend that if you don't act like an idiot (like I did). This particular one supports three bikes, which all fit just fine. Make sure to have a bungee cord to hold the wheels together, otherwise they flop around a bit... My only desire for this would be that they include another lock-nut, for retards like me. ... show more

  • Hey, nice rack!
Finding that my local bike shop carried Swagman racks and being able to see the quality first hand, I decided to make this purchase. I've used it a couple of times now, and I'm happy with it. It is well built and only took a few minutes to put together upon arrival. The "pin" is threaded so that I can be tightened down, thereby eliminating almost all "play" in the receiver. The only caveat to that is that the pin only works from one side (as only one side of the receiver is threaded). The top plate is held down by two star-shaped hand nuts. The benefit is that this creates a "clamp" effect, holding the bike(s) fairly securely and preventing any swing. The downside is that you must completely unscrew both of these to add/remove the bike(s) to the rack. It is more time consuming than a "strap" that holds the bike, and (if you aren't paying attention) the nuts roll all over the parking lot when you unscrew it too quickly and it comes off before you expected it to. The top plate is not symmetric either...it lines up one way, but not the other. Unfortunately, there isn't anything on the top plate to indicate which is front and back...I will be adding something to mine to make that more clear. I haven't used my lock on the rack yet, but there are holes on the top plate ONLY. This means that you will need to have a flexible lock that you can run through the top plate, around the bikes, and then back through the second hole in the top plate. If there were holes that lined up in both top and bottom, I could use a standard lock with an elongated hasp. Just a thought! Finally, the two bolts that old the top plate down *could* scrape your tube if you aren't being very careful when you load your bike(s) onto the rack. Fortunately, I don't think I'll EVER be exhausted when I put my bike onto the rack, so there is NO WAY that I'll ever bugger up my bike by doing something like that. But seriously, that's my only big concern. Overall, I like it. Can't beat the price and it seems to be quality material and construction. With just a couple of minor tweaks, I could have given this 5 stars and begged to give it a 6th. ... show more

  • Simple/Strong
I had previously ordered a more expensive rack but when installed the bikes were too close to the back of my 5th wheel. This rack was very affordable and strong. I had been disassembling our bikes and putting them in the bed of the truck around my Anderson hitch. This is so much easier. Well work the money and much easier on the bikes also. I checked them at every stop and I’m not sure they ever moved. ... show more
