  • Great Start To a Hammock Sleep System
Color: Orange
I've had a traditional hammock that I've used recreationally for years, but have never considered using it as an overnight sleep system due to the lack of protection from bugs. This hammock is a great next step. I was impressed that this system had an integral netting setup that zips completely closed and keeps the mosquitos outside. Likes - Hammock - The hammock is seamless which is new to me, and proved to be quite comfortable. My old hammock was a sewn together series of panels, and it always felt like the seams were at a different tension than the panels and put pressure points on you as you were in the hammock. The seamless design solves that problem nicely with one large panel. The hammock has a multitude of pockets for storage while using the hammock and the largest one functions as the stuff sack for the entire system when used for storage. I found the small one that is sewn inside the bug net to be the perfect spot to store you cell phone while snoozing. The hammock is terminated with two high quality carabiner clips to hook into the tree straps. The hammock is big enough to achieve a diagonal lay and sleep nearly flat and I'm 6'4" tall so it should be good for most users. Bug Net - The netting is really the differentiator for this system. I thought that the netting would further complicate getting in and out of the hammock but it proved to not be a factor. Simply unzip about a 4 foot long section of the zipper and sit as you would normally. The net can be zipped off entirely if you want to remove it, but I can tell you I won't be removing it. It was so nice resting streamside and laughing at the bugs on the OUTSIDE of the net trying to pester me, but to no avail. The system also includes an elastic ridge line that I pulled through the inside of the hammock and clipped onto the carabiner clips. This kept the netting up and away from you and worked great. Tree Straps - These are very nice straps. They are approximately 1" wide and are the type which has the "adjustment" built in via a series of pockets along the strap. Simply loop the strap around the tree, and then clip the carabiner to the pocket on the strap that gives you the best hang position. Straps are very high quality and stitched nicely. Weight and Size - Considering that this system would replace a traditional tent, I would say that the weight and size are both lower than my 1 man tent that I currently use. You'd need to add a tarp or fly to protect from rain to give a true comparison, but I still think that this would be a net weight and size savings over my tent. Opportunity For Improvement - To start with, I had no issues with my first use. I'm 250+ lbs and this hammock didn't complain at all. Quality seems to be above average at all the points that matter. The only "complaint" I have is that the zipper that attaches the netting to the hammock is an unbranded zipper. While this isn't an immediate concern, it always seems to me that zippers are always the weak link. I'd love to see a YKK zipper on here and that would alleviate all my concerns. Despite that, the zipper worked flawlessly and only jammed once when I carelessly ran over the pocket. I was able to back it up and clear the jam without damage to either part. Conclusion - This hammock is a great start to a hammock sleep system. If you are considering a change from the traditional tent sleep system to a hammock system then give this a shot. You'll need to include a fly or tarp to complete the setup, but those are readily available and would easily incorporate with this hammock. Quality is great, and I love the burn orange color. I'd certainly recommend this hammock to anyone looking to make an entry into a hammock sleep system. ... show more

  • Comfortable hammock that's quick to set up
Color: Green
I have 2 different hammocks from Sunyear, this and and older version which uses 2 guylines to hold up the bug net. This new version, when packed down, is larger and heavier than the old one, but it's still small and portable enough to satisfy all but the most hardcore ultralight enthusiasts. The majority of the additional bulk comes from the bug net which is very heavy duty, even more so than the already very well lived net on my older version. This new bug net is fully removable and allows access from either side. This might not seen like a big deal but it's incredibly useful to open the other side of the hammock after an errant shoe rolled to the wrong side in the night. This hammock is also incredibly quick to take up and down because there's no need to deal with guylines to hold up the bug net as it "self hangs". The bug net follows a more traditional single ridgeline triangle and won't rub against tarps. Sunyear hammocks come with very nice tree straps with adjustment loops that run half way down the 10 foot strap, giving you plenty of flexibility. The entire package is sturdy, and well made, and the company is very responsive and customer service oriented. At the time of purchase, there were no instructions on setup, care, or how to use. There is also an included elastic ridgeline that isn't particularly useful. If hung correctly, there is some tension in the net and it holds itself up without a ridgeline. If you want to set a proper ridgeline to hold the correct amount of sag or to hang heavy items from, you will have to use some Paracord or similar as the elastic ridgeline won't help. That being said, there are spaces on either end which allow you to fit a ridgeline without compromising normal operation. IF YOU CAN'T ZIP UP THE BUG NET OR IT IS BUNCHING, you are pulling the hammock too tight. Either hang the hammock higher and allow more slack or attach a proper ridgeline. TLDR; Overall, this is a very comfortable and easy to use hammock. Setup is quick, and even if you've never tried hammock camping, you'll soon be sleeping off the ground like a pro. ... show more

  • Well designed and comfortable single person hammock
Color: Black
For my 5'-10" and 205 lbs this was a very solid and comfortable hammock. For connecting to the tree/vertical whatever it has a pair of friendly and solidly built straps which are easy to connect/disconnect. The bug net is totally removable and can be stashed in the stuff bag that hangs from the side of the hammock. Best thing about the bug net, aside from keeping the bugs out, is that it's designed to not droop down into the space inside the hammock. Sunyear has a few other models where the bug net needs to be tied up separately from the hammock which can interfere with your rain fly (sold separately). With this improved design the bug net stays high and provides no contact with your skin and thus no bugs biting through. I spent my first two nights in a hammock in this particular one and it was far better than sleeping on the ground. If you're not used to sleeping on your back you may benefit from a balled up jacket or small pillow to allow your head to roll to the side a bit and this hammock was just the right size to allow me to do that. If sleeping in cooler weather then, as with all hammocks, you'll benefit from a sleeping mat (foam or inflatable) to separate your backside from the bottom of the hammock. Support at Sunyear is top notch and I had a very good experience with them on another purchase. This is a company that cares about you being happy with your equipment. If you're not happy, let them know. They interested in making it right and are open to design changes if you have any to offer. They seem like good folks. ... show more
