It found what I had lost in the grass in five minutes that I could not find by eye despite long searches. The detection range for the small "throw chain" I lost was only a few inches. To cover an area, lay the detector on the turned-up tynes of a plastic leaf rake and just drag the tynes-up rake behind you over the area you want to cover. I was hoping to use this for treasure-hunting but, owing to the limited metal detection range of 1-2 inches, it is more suited to be used as an airport security wand.

I didn’t want to spend a lot on a metal detector. I used this to find my property stakes, two rear stakes were slightly in a small lake I live next to. I was able to find them with this device.

    • Good for being a budget level pinpointer
I have been an occasional detectorist for a fair while, I use a full size metal detector and already had a high end quality pinpointer but it's always good to have a back up in case one needs repaired or if someone wants to detect with you and doesn't have one. I said all that to say it would not be fair to compare this pinpointer to one that costs 6 or 7 times as much so I am basing my review on how it does for being a low cost budget level pinpointer. The range I got in open air was about 2 1/2 inches, when detecting for things in the dirt the moisture content of the dirt can affect the range of any detector, moister dirt tends to get you deeper range and dryer dirt less range. For those who are really new to detecting please realize while you might find some things with a pinpointer alone, a pinpointer is usually meant to "pinpoint" a find's specific location more precisely after getting a signal from a full size metal detector of something metal in a small area. I do like that this pinpointer has a stretchable spring to attach it to a belt hoop so you don't accidentally lose track of where you set it all, it also has a holder you put on your belt. It does come with an alkaline 9v battery which I tried first (and it worked) but then I tested it with a rechargeable 9v battery I had and it worked with that too. This is a good choice for those on a budget or if you are trying out metal detecting to see if it is something that would interest you enough to be willing to buy more expensive equipment, even if you do later buy more expensive equipment you will still have this as a back up or available for a friend or relative to use. ... show more
