  • Well made 3 pt log splitter at a reasonable price, but know what you are getting in to.
Ok, first of all, this is a quality constructed wood splitter, made with heavy duty steel components. I have no complaints about the quality of this log splitter, and getting it for the price I did with free shipping was great. But, know what you are going to be doing once you get it. I spent the better part of two half days assembling it. So to my experience. First of all, you are going to be getting this in a wooden crate off the truck. We had a small trailer that the driver slid it onto so I could pull it back to a concrete driveway for assembly. The wooden crate itself is kind of a pain to pull apart, but not a lot of great ways to ship this otherwise. The crate was more compact than I thought it would be, but that is because it was in components stacked on each other. I think it is fair to say you need to be comfortable with doing heavy work on the ground to assemble this. It is not like some of the motorbikes or other things that come 80% assembled, and you are tightening brake lines and slapping on handlebars or whatever. This has big heavy pieces. This comes in pieces like an I-beam, and a very large heavy piston on a trunnion and you will need to assemble it. That said, the instructions are clear, and logical, and for the most part if you follow along with that, and are somewhat capable, which I am assuming you will be, if you use 3 point tractor implements, you shouldn't have too much of a problem. *Note: it does require several large wrenches--like 15-21 I think, and something even larger I needed for the hydraulic fittings I had. Read the manual on this to get the specific sizes, but I also made use of a pipe wrench. It will also require some heavy lifting putting components into place, although it was mostly very logical and for what it is it couldn't have gone too much better. The only part I really had difficulty with was when you had to line up both sets of braces at the same time, and due to lack of flex in heavy duty steel braces, maneuvering enough to put bolts to lock it in, was a little tricky. A helper of some kind would be great, but I managed this assembly by myself. If you are using this on a relatively small yard tractor under 40-50 hp, you are likely going to use the smaller of the 3 pt hitch mounting pins. (category 1) There are larger ones (cat 2) as well, but they are right above it, and frankly kind of in the way. The problem is the bottom pins will be on the ground if you don't set unit on a pallet or a stand of some kind. I have seen others with a built in stand that would be wonderful on this unit, but be aware of having a stand to set it this on so life doesn't suck so much when you are trying to get it on the 3 pt hitch. I would like to say a word about hydraulics. It doesn't come with the hoses. You will need to either get them custom made, which is costly, or find them at a store, I found 10 footers at Ace hardware with 1/2 npt thread that goes on the hydraulic unit. You will also need to find hydraulic coupler plugs that fit your tractor SCV and whatever hose ends you end up with. the Apache brand hoses I had were 1/2 inch pipe thread. I ended up having to get The other thing you may find out is that you will end up running your tractors hydraulic control to run it, unless you have power beyond kit or similar that gives your constant velocity hydraulic pressure when your tractor is running. I don't, so I am operating the unit on a JD 4300 with one rear remote used for raising and lowering the mower deck, which I unplugged temporarily for this. Now, I have heard some people say they tie the on-tractor lever open to give constant flow, but I instead used the tractor lever hydraulic control to operate the splitter, as whether by design or accident, the hydraulic unit has a lever that goes into a kind of locked position, and this seemed easier to do. You will get a few more steps in, but that's relatively simpler to go from fender of tractor to the splitter to put a fresh log into place. The splitter itself worked pretty well. No piston splitter is fast, and this isn't either. But I did try it on a slightly smaller hydraulic system, and it was slower then the 4300, on which the speed was quite acceptable without idling up the engine much. Splits were pretty clean, and the log cradles did help with that. I haven't split a lot of logs yet, but it split pine really easily, and the very stringy hackberry wood also split easy enough, even though it is tough and stringy. The unit doesn't lack power to do what it is supposed to. Oh the reason for 10 foot hoses is actually due to a nice feature of this, which is it swings up vertical if you want to do bigger logs you don't want to lift that you can just roll into the splitting column and set vertical. When you swing the ibeam vertical, the hose slack to the hydraulic unit gets stretched. Overall, this is a really solid log splitter. There are positives and negatives about using a 3 pt splitter as opposed to a gas run one, notably the assembly, and need for a tractor. I don't love hooking up 3 pt hitch implements all that well; sometimes it's a pain, but overall it's a tried and true system. If you accept that, the important thing to take from this is that power horse has a tried and true log splitter here. It's well made, looks like it will be very durable, functional, and it is pretty well priced. It is a good machine if you decide you want to go the 3 pt route. I gave it a five because it does exactly what it is supposed to do, so it's pretty hard to downgrade it for assembly time. I am sure it could use some new technology improvements, but it does do everything it is supposed to. Getting it together was more work than I thought it would be, but the splitter is capable and robust. ... show more

  • PTO Log splitter
The log splitter comes without a manual. You are required to go on line and print the 54 pages. Once that was completed it was easy to follow the manual. It took me three hours to put together. I knew finding the fittings to connect American pipe threads with metric threads was going to be a challenge but it can be done. I was surprised at the expense of the fittings. Once attached to my Kubota the splitter works well. I wish the ram speed was faster. This will meet my needs of two cord a year. ... show more

  • Wasn't hard to assemble. Great tool.
After I saw a few complaints in the reviews on it being difficult to assemble or needed special tools, I was concerned. It wasn't hard at all to assemble, a little common sense goes a long ways. I split 8 beach ball diameter logs in about 15 min. That would've taken me quite a bit by hand. Looking forward to stacking some wood now. ... show more

  • Manufacturing error, unacceptable response
I received this unit, uncrated and assembled it, only to find what I assume is a manufacturing error when I went to hook it up to my tractor (John Deere w/ iMatch). On my unit the inner pickup points are directly below the outer set. In the photos from the listing (and from other reviewers) these pickup points are behind the outer set. It appears that the tabs for the pickup points on my unit were welded on in the wrong orientation (see pics) - and that makes them unusable (the bar that the pickup points are mounted to is in the way). I reported this via Amazon and indicated clearly that I did not want to return the unit, I just wanted a replacement part to address the issue. I received a form letter from the seller with an RMA number and instructions to ship the entire unit back to them (they didn't confirm the manufacturing issue or address my concern in any way). I am not disassembling and recrating this beast and then shipping it back at my own expense (several hundred dollars). The only option provided by Amazon was whether the seller's response addressed my issue. I clicked "no". That was three weeks ago and I haven't heard from the seller or Amazon since. IF this unit was manufactured correctly, or the seller made it right, I'm confident it would be a 5 star. As it is, it looks like I have to go fix this myself. ... show more

Great price. Have used for many hours at a time. Speed depends on your tractor. If I'm in a rush I can high idle and split faster. I tried to add a top plate to split more wood in one pass since I was not having trouble making it through the logs, but it added too much stress and removed the top of the wedge. Removed my modifications and still using. The arms to pull the wedge back out of a log are flimsy and bend out I plan to add on to strengthen them. And it needs a stand to help hook/unhook from the tractor 3 pallets works in the mean time. ... show more
